SUMMER1993

President's Message Mark Williams, Oviedo, Florida

The main purpose of the FF A Alumni

is

to support and promote the FFA Organization, FFA activities and agricultural education on the local, state and national levels. Most of you already know this. That is why you became an Alumni member. But perhaps you have not thought about the larger role your support is playing.

Another of our stated purposes is to promote and maintain an appreciation of the American free enterprise system. In my

"'Oinion, this is as important a role to support as the main purpose our association.

Why, you might ask? Well, in my opinion, it is the free enterprise system and the entrepreneurial spirit that built our great agricultural and agribusiness system, as well as being the basic component to our economic strength which built this great nation. I believe it

is

not only important for us to maintain our free enterprise system and the individual entrepreneurial spirit, but to nurture and develop it to ensure the continuance of our economic strength and way of life.

Actively supporting your local and state affiliates is doing more than you think.

If

your asking yourself how, let me give you a few examples.

I know many FFA Alumni members have purchased a steer that has been raised, shown and then sold by an FFA member.

Perhaps you have purchased plants from the school nursery which were produced by students of the horticulture program.

These are just a few examples. But what better way do we have of introducing our students, the future backbone of our free enterprise system, to the reality of how it works.

I think the entrepreneurial spirit, which is to learn something well, work hard to develop it, apply the leadership to get it done and then reap the benefits of your hard work, is something that must be understood by our young adults if our nation is to continue to be the economic super power that we are.

I feel

it

is very important for

.YQlL

to be active and involved

· ' your local and state affiliates. Don't just pay your dues to be ,e to say your a member. Get involved in some of the many activities that your affiliate can do to support agricultural education, the FFA and our free enterprise system.

Saved Another One

by Paul Wegmeyer

Immediate Past Michigan FF A Alumni President

Talk about a testimonial ...

If

you ever wondered about the effectiveness of getting people together around a common cause, ask the

folks

in Whittemore-Prescott. When

it

appeared their agriscience program was about to be closed because of a teacher retiring, these people in rural northeastern Lower Michigan had a different idea. An idea that

if

they got together and fonned an FFA Alumni Affiliate, they could save their FFA program. They were successful.

It

all started with a phone call to our Michigan FFA Alumni office from a concerned chapter FF A officer who wondered if there was anything the state FFA Alumni could do to help save their program. Soon thereafter, I found myself on the road to an evening meeting of parents and past students. Over 30 people were gathered in a tiny classroom when I arrived. After the retiring teacher reviewed the status of the FFA in terms of programs, activities and enrollment, I discussed what FFA Alumni

is

all about what we do at the national and state levels, and why it is important that a successful agriscience program be complimented by a strong, local FFA Alumni.

The vote to affiliate was unanimous! Those in attendance prioritized four immediate concerns that would become their program of work. The first included scheduling a meeting with the school board president and school administration to "educate"

them on the wants and needs of the community. Within a week, I

was back on the road to Whittemore-Prescott with our Michigan FFA Projects Consultant to sit in as resource people. The new Alumni leaders held an open, positive discussion for nearly two hours. A plan of action to save the FFA was developed. Phone calls were placed into the state department of education, and a biology teacher was certified to become the new agriscience teacher. Then, the school principal asked if the Alumni could find a volunteer FFA advisor to help with the FFA students. An Alumni member immediately stepped forward. It became very clear to the community, FFA was alive again in Whittemore- Prescott.

It's amazing what can happen, when you don't care who gets the credit. When people get together to work diplomatically with school board members and school administrators to save a program, good things happen for kids, and in this story, an FFA chapter was saved. What an exciting honor it is to be a state FFA Alumni leader and to know that what we do really does make a difference for the future of the FF A. I have seen new affiliates started for a number of reasons. But this one was different. Perhaps what happened at Whittemore-Prescott, Michigan, is an example of what needs to happen throughout the nation. Rather than let their program close, these folks united to develop a solid plan, a diplomatic strategy of support, and then executed it with precision. When you see an amazing success story like this one, it makes you feel certain that we need an FFA Alumni affiliate complimenting every FFA chapter in every state.

Former FF A Member Designs Specialty Bag Featured for FF A Alumni Fund Raising Program

Bryan C. Foreman received the 1993 "North Texas Small Business of the Year" award. Foreman was president of the Bullard, Texas FFA Chapter in 1968. In 1988, while working as a sewing machine repairman in a Tyler sewing factory, he started a part-time sewing operation in a garage. Bryan Foreman is now president of Bags Specialty Products, Inc., has 20

employees and produces the Hide 'N Seat Pack. This pack is one of the featured items by Free Enterprise Fund Raising for FFA Alumni fund raising. He states, "no matter what business you pursue, your education from agricultural education and FFA will always be a valuable tool. One thing I will always use is the parliamentary procedure practices that I learned in the FFA." He is looking forward to working with FFA chapters to raise money with his Hide 'N Seat Pack, a stadium cushion that becomes a barrel tote bag.

More than 800 FFA members will participate this summer in the Oklahoma FFA Alumni Leadership Training Camp at Camp Tulakogee near Wagoner. Members may choose between four sessions of four days each. For every ten FF A Alumni members in an affiliate, an FFA member may attend camp at no charge.

"The Fire Inside" is this year's camp theme which focuses on teamwork, self-image, goal setting, FFA opportunities and leadership development. FFA members engage in action-packed activities which instill positive attitudes, communication skills, character building qualities and citizenship responsibilities.

The camp will be conducted by the eight 1993-94 state FFA officers. Each officer receives a cash scholarship and a life membership to the Oklahoma and National FFA Alumni.

A scholarship wa<> also given through an essay contest for FFA members. The necessary funds were raised at the first Texas FFA Alumni Auction. Another popular service to affiliates was the development of an FFA recruitment brochure which was personalized for each affiliate.

Personal Development is for Everyone

by Andy Markwart, Student Team Leader, National FFA Organization

We all want to feel better about ourselves and lead more dynamic lives. Personal development, along with developing leadership and career success, are the three major areas of focus in the mission of the National FFA Organization. Personal development concepts are woven into each FFA activity so that students walk away each time with a clearer, more confident sense of themselves.

One activity that partners state associations and the national organization to deliver personal development to FFA members is the Made For Excellence (MFE) conference. These two-day conferences are helping over 6,000 young people each year shape a produc- tive, fulfilling lifestyle for themselves. Although these conferences are designed for a teen audience, adults can use the same tech- niques to find direction in their lives and tap into self-motivation.

The process is simple: get a clear picture of yourself, envision how you want your future to be, and begin mapping how to get there. The first step is to take an objective look at our lives. There are a number of excellent tools to help with this assessment including True Colors, Myers-Briggs and the DISC Personality Profile. These tools hold a mirror up to the individual, reflecting natural strengths and highlighting areas that need growth. As people get a true view of themselves, they find it easier to handle peer pressure, which is not something that just affects teens. The next step is to clearly identify goals and what steps are necessary to achieve them. Since it usually takes other people to help us achieve our goals, instruction is given on how to interact with others.

People are happiest when they are living a life balanced between family, work, their spiritual life and recreation. It is valuable tr take inventory of where we spend our time so that no one area receives too much or too little attention. This goes a long way in addressing stress management, which is becoming more important as the pace in our lives quickens. A refresher course in personal development can add vitality and focus to anyone's life, whether you're 14 or 65.
