Stone I have recently

had

the opportunityto

examine

the bats on

which

Harrison Allen based the

name

I>*//////<;<-<nn'itinu* (Proc.Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 18<>(>, p.

280).

The

specimens,

two

in

number,

arein alcohol,

and

labeled "San Salvador, Dr. J. Leidy."

Though much

fadedincolortheyare clearly referable to Myotittnigricanx (Maximilian), oratleast tothatform ofthe speciesoccuring in

Columbia and

southern Mexico.

The name

<-<irin- nuifis therefore a

synonym

of nigricann unless the bat to

which

it

was

appliedshouldeventuallyprovetobedistinctfrom the tnie nigricansof Brazil, specimensof

which

Ihave not seen. In that case it

would

be tenableforthenorthern animal. GerritN. Miller. Jr.

The

generic

name Evotomys

not invalidated by Anaptogonia.

I haverecently

had

an opportunityto

examine two

specimens of

Anap

togonia

from

the collection of the Philadelphia

Academy

of Sciences, Thismaterial

shows

that Anaptogonia, although provided with rooted molars, isinno

way

closelyrelatedtoErotoiny*.

The

teeth areaslarge as inMicrotnx(Xcojiber)alleni,

and

the

enamel

patternischaracteri/.edby acute angularity.

The

genus thus resembles the 'M/vvVv/W itifrrntnlitrx"

of Xewtori

and

the Doltnnynof Xehring. Therefore the

name

Kr<>1<>iui/x asapplied tothe

Redbacked Mice

is in no

way

invalidated by the pre vious publication of Anaptogonia.f-GerritX. \fillrr. Jr.

In describing a bat from Greytown, Nicaragua, under the

name

M'i- cronycterift microti*(Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 181)8, p. JJ28), I

overlookedthefactthat

Dobson had

previously(Proc. Zool.Sue London, 1878, p. 880) described a

member

of the

same

genus from Cayenne,

French

Guiana, as Schfuostoma Iradiyoir, a

name

not cited in Ti-oues- sart's 'Catalogus.'

The two

animalsare evidently

much more

distinct from each other than the similarity of their specific

names would

at first suggest. Aficronycteris l>r<i<-/it/<>tix is, with the exception of J/, beknii,oneof the largestspecies of the genus (forearm 40 mm.), while'

M.

microtix is

among

the smallest (forearm HI). In M. hrm-htinti* the-

upright portion of the noselcaf is

"much

narrower than the horse shoe,"

and

the prominences on the chinareof very peculiar form. In

M. inicrotixthe upright portion of the noseleaf is fully as wide as the 'horse-shoe,'

and

theprominences onthe chin are exactlyas in normal

members

The

systematic

name

of the

Cuban

red bat.

In

Ramon

do la Sacra's IlistoriaFisica PoliticayNatural<lela Islade Cuba, III, p. '>2, 1845, Gervais describes the

cuban

red bat as Vesperfilio hluxitcrittii. Publicationof the

name

heattributestoLesson

and

Garnot,

"Bull. Sc. Nat. VIII, p. 95." This reference I have not been able to verify, but it unquestionably antedates the publication of Gundlach's

name

Atnln/i/tfi iift'ifferi (18til) by sixteen years.

The

animal should thereforebe

known

Tomes.*

In 1857

Tomes

publishedadescriptionof the Indian representativeof Mt/nti* myotix under the

name

Vespertilio blythii (Proc.Zool. Hoc.

Lon

don, 1857, p. 53). Recent authors have without exception regarded the animalas identicalwiththe

European

form.

A

specimencollectedbyDr.

YV. L. Abbott in

Kashmir

(9 adult No. '$\*^ United States National

Museum)

shows, however, thatthisviewisnot correct,

and

that Myotix blythiiisa well characterized species, readily distinguishable from M.

iitynfixhy itsshorterears,

much

smaller audital bulhe,

and

byapeculiar ity in the formof the maxillary molars. In these teeth the protocone

is lower and further

removed

from the paracone than in M. myotix, a character

which

is at once appreciable

when

the teeth of the

two

species are viewed in profile from the front. This peculiarity is evi- dently ofconsiderable importance, asIcan findnoappreciable variation in the form of the molars

among

a large

number

of

European

speci

mens

The

Scotophilus

pachyomus

of

Tomes

a valid species.

Described in 1857 (Proc. Zool. Soc. London, p. 50) from specimens taken in India the faotophtfot*pat-kyomus of

Tomes

has of recent years been regarded as inseparable from the

European

Serotine Bat (see Dobson, Catal. C'hiropt. Brit. Mus.. p. 101, and Blanford,

Mamm.
