specieshere recorded have been deposited

collection.Cockleburs
strongly specialized for casualtransportation
are typicalwaifs and reach
all sortsof placeswhere the wastes
of civilizationand nature accumulate. The search
for cockle-burs takes the
collector tosuch
interesting spots as refuse-heaps about
freight-yards, factoriesand wharves,
to ash, trashand garbage dumps and the environs
ofthe barnyard,
cattle-pensand
pig-sties.Cockle-burs
likeground not
es- peciallyoccupied with other
plants.In eroded
places,on
grades,anywhere
there isnew-turned earth they may be found.
They grow
wellamong crops
ofrather open stand

characters ofthe
fruits or burs.These,
likemost
specific characters, areextremely
variable, sothat
strict definitionofthe groups ranked
as speciesmay be
quitedifficult.After
experience,however, the most dependable
charactersor combinations
ofcharacters are easilyappreciated and
identi- fication isrobbed
ofmost
of its perplexities.The subjoined key
isbased on the
characterswe have found most
feasible for identifyingthe
local cockleburs.The
plate illustratingthe burs we
trust willbe a
usefuladjunct
tothe
key.For numerous other

lists 5 species ofXanthium from the
DistrictofColumbia
region,an
increase of2over the num-
ber included
