The film that finally dots emerge is a thought-provoking and enter
taining version of a modern social comedy. What makes it better than the ordinary comedy it that The Big Chill manages to raise many important issues Where it falls short it the manner in which Kas
dan deals with them issues The story revolves around a weekend spent together by seven Inends after the suicide of their former college friend and spiritual mentor, Alex All of the seven heve tucceded relatively well in the c l T f ” S * ” y f c ' H o a . except h i t * ! * * H‘V|w ‘h “ impetus ha« forces the seven to look at themselves and how far they've

..i less capable hands this movie could have been nothing m o n th an a tw o -hou r dirge, hut Kaadans straightforward d in r tceial style intelligent dialog t never let the action slip O nt is kept pleasantly engrossed In the c o n v enations and situations
It is only when one slops lo con
sider the actions of the characters that the film begins to fall apart W ty does Kasdan want us lo feel n o d about the sexual consumm a
tion of a friendship when earlier in the story we are told that sex be
tween friends will only build a wall between th em ! Kasdan seems to have no qualm s about this paradox.
Such contradictions ultimately render The Big Chill imperfect Kasdan obviously caret about his characters and, in the end, ihe au
dience alto cares about them Where Kasdan makes his mistake is in poking fun at his characters while alio pointing a finger of con
demnation at them for having told out their ideals in their quests for financial success
In the end this leaves the viewer M th the ch ok e of either embracing the characters as survivors who have adapted to their surround-
ings. or condemning them for hav

cepted the domestic life they once scorned This is s choice no viewer should be forced lo make It leads one to believe that Kasdan himself does not know what to think of his characters
It gould be s gr
to menfmn the line cast astembled for The A f Chill Ensemble acting by its nature requires of a c to n a certain powerful restraint, and K asdan s cast delivers it ad mirably
O f course, some a cto n seem to rise above the rest on the strength of raw talent. Glenn Close. )eff Goldblum and William Hurt all add a special presence to the pro
duction Meg Tilly also deserves credit In her role as Chloe Alex former live-in girlfriend. She tran
scends what could be construed as the naivete of youth by successful
ly conveying the endless depths of innocence
As Kasdan s second film effort.
The Big Chill never fails to enter
tain despite its imperfections, and the topics it addresses are weighty enough to keep you discussing it into the wee hours of the morning

quality of potato chips, ogee you started you couldn't stop, and you couldn't ingest one unless you had another in had to follow it down.
Not panion book,
ter. A scant hundred pages long (minus the bibliography), Castle is a chatty little pastiche ostensibly about the writing of New Sun. In
deed there are some interesting chapters describing bits and pieces of the p r o e m that resulted in New Sun
In the first chapter, for instance?
W olfe tells how he turned the fac
tual Saint Catherine into the fk - tional Holy Katharine, patroness of ths Seekers for Truth and Peni
tence (a.k .a. the to r tu im ' guild).
There is also a chapter of rather obtuse jokes told by characters from the books (they still enjoy rambling on at length)
All this is delightful, but the bag of potato chips runs out too soon.
T oo much of the book is taken up with advice to would-be sci-fi writers (some reprinted from a magazine surfed at the same), such as a few tongue-in-cheek hints about how to get invited to a con vention as the guest of honor
O ffer will be enjoyed by Wolfe aficionados and New Sun devo
tees, but nearly everyone else will find it disjointed and insubstantial.

Metros defeat Butler, split tourney
The Metros Sharon Johnson sets the ball as Marcea Lee prepares to spike It over the net to Indiana Central during an O c t 27 match (Photo by Mark Langiois)
IUPUI's women's volleyball team closed the season yesterday by defeating Butler 3-2.
Over the weekend the Metros split two matches in the district qualifying tournament at Franklin.
IUPUI lost to Franklin 17-15, 15-10, 15-12 and defeated Oakland City 15-10, 15-11. 15-12. Franklin defeated Oakland City in three straight games to earn a spot in the district tournament over the
Metros.
The Metros' first game with Franklin set the stage for the match as Franklin led throughout and served game point at 14-9. IUPUI earned a side out and then Jane Deak served six straight points to put the Metros ahead 15-14. Frank
lin regained the serve and turned back the Metros 17-15.
Although the Metros stayed close in the final two games.
Franklin held, out to sweep the match.
The Metros started slowly against Oakland City but came back to sweep the Oaks in three straight. The Oaks opened a quick 5-2 lead in the first game but the
Metros closed fast to turn them back.
With only Marcea Lee gradua
ting and with no juniors on the team. Coach Tim Brown's Metros would appear to have a bright future.
