Obituary—José Adriano Giorgi (20/12/1970–22/04/2018)
AdrianoorAdrianinho,ashewasaffectionatelycalledbyhis friends,leftusveryearly,passingawayunexpectedlyinAprilofthis year.JoséAdrianoGiorgiwasapassionatebiologyteacherandvery deartothestudentsoftheAltamiracampusoftheFederalUniver- sityofPará,wherehewasateacherandresearcherinevolutionary biology.
AdrianowasborninRiodeJaneiro,attheCasadeSaúdeSanta LuciainBotafogo,onDecember20,1970.HewasthesonofNorma Bouchardt da Costa and José Giorgi, and the youngest brother ofMariaCristinaGiorgi,JoséAlexandreGiorgi,andJoséEduardo Giorgi.
Adriano’spassionforbiologydevelopedwhenhewasstillachild whilespendinghisholidayswithhisfamilyinaseasidehouseinthe municipalityofRiodasOstras.Whilethere,hiscontactwithnature wasintenseandsparkedhislifelongadmirationandcuriosityfor animaldiversity.
HeenteredtheBiologicalSciencesprogramoftheFederalRural UniversityofRiodeJaneiro(UFRRJ)in1991.ThisperiodatUFRRJ wasextremely importantin hislife,bothfromprofessionaland personalpointsofview.Theeducationand traininghereceived atUFRRJandthecircleoffriendswholaterbecamehisacademic colleaguesledAdrianotochooseEntomologyandSystematicsfor hiscareer.
Hisinterestinsystematicsmaturedovertimeunderthedirec- tion of several teachers and mentors, in particular, Prof. José RobertoPujolLuz,anearlypromoterofhisacademiccareer.Later, underthesupervisionofProf.CarlosAlbertoCruz,Adrianoreceived hisfirstScientific Initiationgrant fortheproject“Surveyof the Amphibian Fauna of the Tinguá Biological Reserve”, where he obtainedtraininginthebasictechniquesofcollectingandprepar- ingscientificmaterial.
In1995,throughtheencouragementofhisfriendandprofessor, Prof.FábioPitombo,AdrianocontactedProf.MiguelA.Monnéatthe NationalMuseumofRiodeJaneiro,whoservedasamentorandgot himinvolvedprofessionallyininsecttaxonomy.Duringthisperiod, hedevotedhimselftothetaxonomyoftheCerambycidae,afamily ofColeoptera,andassistedincuratingtheextensivecollectionsof thisgroup.Hepublishedhisfirstscientificarticlein1998.Adriano joinedtheGraduatePrograminZoologyattheUniversityofSão Pauloin1997,undertheguidanceofProf.NelsonPapaveroandco- advisedbyProf.Monné,againchoosingtaxonomyofCerambycidae asthesubjectofhisMaster’sthesis.Later,Adrianopublishedfour scientificarticlesderivedfromhisthesis.
AfterconcludinghisMaster’sdegree,Adrianowashiredforthe positionofPatentAnalystoftheNationalInstituteofIndustrial Property,where he remainedfor 2years. He wentbackto the Academyin2003,whenhewashiredattheInstituteofBiologyof theStateUniversityofRiodeJaneiro(UERJ)asatechnicalassistant underthesupervisionofProf.LenaGeise,toorganizebothdidactic andscientificcollectionsoftheDepartment.
In 2004,Adriano joinedthePh.D.program inEntomologyat theUniversityofGeorgia,USA,undertheguidanceofProf.Joseph McHugh, workingonthesystematicsof ladybird beetles(fam- ilyCoccinellidae).Duringthisprolifictimeofhiscareer,Adriano dedicatedhimselftoexpandinghisknowledgeofthephilosophical andpracticalaspectsofsystematics.Hisstudiesincludeddescrip- tive taxonomic works as well as phylogenetic studies utilizing molecularapproachestoimprovethehigher-levelclassificationof coccinellidsandtounderstandtheevolutionoffoodpreferencesin thefamily.
Throughouthis Ph.D. studiesat UGA,Adriano presented his researchatmanyprofessionalandscientificmeetings,receiving severalawardsandgaininganinternationalreputationasaspe- cialistofcoccinellidsystematics.In2008,hepresentedhisresearch atthe23rdInternationalCongressofEntomologyinSouthAfrica, an experiencethat waspartially funded byan awardfrom the EntomologicalSocietyofAmerica.Adrianoalsobegancollaborat- ingwithnotableresearchersaroundtheworld,including,Dr.Adam

´Slipi ´nski,curatoroftheAustralianNationalInsectCollection(Can- berra,Australia),Dr.NataliaVandenbergoftheNationalMuseum ofNaturalHistory(Washington,DC,USA),andProf.LuciaM.de AlmeidafromtheFederalUniversityofParaná(Curitiba,Brazil).
Aftergraduatingin2009,AdrianoreturnedtoBrazilforpostdoc- toralworkassociatedwiththegraduateprograminAgricultural Entomology of theUniversidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, under the supervision of Prof. Jorge Braz Torres. His research centered on the characterization of the Coccinellidae fauna in Pernambucoandontheevaluation ofpotentialspeciesfor bio- logical control of fodder palm and cotton plants. During this postdoctoralstudy,Adrianogainedadditionalfieldexperiencein thebiologyof predatoryinsects,an areaofgrowinginterest in Brazil.Healsotooktheopportunitytocontributetotheeduca- tionalactivitiesoftheNucleusinEcologyandSocio-Environmental DevelopmentofMacaé,byinvitationfromProf.ChristineRuta.
In2011,AdrianowashiredasaprofessorattheUniversidade FederaldoPará,Altamiracampus,wherehetaughtundergraduate studentsinBiologicalSciences,Agronomy,andForestEngineering.
AwareofthechallengesofteachinginthisregionofBrazil,Adri- anoalwaysprovidedastimulatinglearningenvironmentwithin theclassroom,andhelaterfoundedthe“Zoolimpiads”,ahighly successfulcompetitionforstudents.
Adrianobelievedthattheeffectivenessofadisciplinewasnot onlyin itscontent,but alsoin theteacher’s abilityto promote arelaxedandstimulatingenvironment.Atthetimeofhisdeath, Adrianowasengagedinmanypersonalandprofessionalactivities, guidingseveralundergraduatestudents,collecting,andworkingon anumberofprojectsinpartnershipwithcolleagues,suchasProf.
MiguelA.Monné,Prof.LúciaM.deAlmeida,andProf.JorgeBraz Torres.Adrianowillbedeeplymissedbyallthatknewhim.
