THE INFLUENCE OF THE USE OF SPELLING BEE GAME MEDIA ON THE SPEAKABILITY OF GRADE 8 STUDENTS. The author is very grateful for the opportunities he has given to realize this research proposal titled "The Influence of Using Spelling Bee Game Media Toward Students".

Background of The Study

Many students feel insecure, even afraid to speak English because they have made mistakes while speaking. The preliminary research was conducted on September 3, 2016, the researcher got the data from the observation that mostly the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung have speech problems. The researcher wants to know about; is the Spelling Bee game in terms of the positive impact on students' speaking skills in the tenth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung.

According to Wendy Curtis, spelling bees have long been thought of as an important part of a child's school experience, a. Hulter Calder states that "the spelling bee is away from strengthening the acquisition of spelling skills is through enjoyable activities. Teaching speaking or teaching English using Spelling Bee games has several advantages, they are.

The Spelling bee game is expected to be useful for teachers in encouraging students to be more successful in language learning, especially speaking. In the spelling game, the teacher gives the material such difficult words that allow students to highlight their English through activities. The independent variable is the student's use of the Bee spelling game (x) and the dependent variable is the student's speaking skill (y). In this case, the writer hypothesizes that there is a hypothetical causality between the students' use of the Bee spelling game (x) as the independent variable and the students' speaking ability (y) as the independent variable to answer the tentative answer to the research problem.

Based on the figure above, it can be assumed that the spelling bee game is good, the students' speaking skills are also good. So it is positive and important to use spelling bee game for the speaking performance of the students. However, if the spelling bee game is bad, the students' speaking skills are also bad.

So there is no positive influence of using spelling aids on students' speaking skills. There is an influence of the spelling bee game towards the student's speaking ability for the eighth grade SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung in the academic year 2016/2017. There is no influence of the spelling bee against the student's speaking skill for the eighth grade SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung in the academic year 2017/2018.

T1: The result before the treatment called Pretest X: Treatment using Spelling Bee Game T2: The result after the treatment called Posttest. The pre-test was administered before the teacher gave them the treatment and the post-test was taken after the teacher gave them the treatment. This study aims to investigate whether there is a positive and significant influence of the use of spelling bee game on the speaking skills of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung.

The population is the group that wants to generalize your finding.3 Furthermore, the population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung in. The sample is a subset of the target population that the researcher plans to study in order to generalize about the target population4. The sample in this research is one class, namely the experimental class consisting of 25 students, and the other as the control class consisting of 25 students.

According to Sugiyon, "a sample is a part of the amount and characteristics that a population has."5 This means that a sample is that part of the population that represents the population that was researched.

Definition of Variables

In this study, the researcher used observation to learn more about the student's condition, especially regarding the score of the speaking subject and also to know the media used by the teacher when they are teaching speaking. Then the researcher analyzed the data and wrote it into the observation list, as a result of pre-survey data. In this design, the pre-test and post-test were designed to investigate whether the use of Spelling Bee Game media can be used to influence speaking performance.

The researcher used an oral test to find out about the students' speaking performance, included in the category of good (75-83). The test was administered twice, namely before the treatment or called as the pre-test and after the treatment or called as the post-test. The student is scored according to the rubric measuring descriptive speaking ability categories that include fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and comprehension.

For oral communication, it is necessary to spell correctly, know the meaning of the word when they speak up. They cannot communicate effectively or express their ideas both orally and in writing if they do not have sufficient vocabulary. Pronunciation is the way for students to produce clearer language when . they speak how sounds vary and pattern in a language.

While the post-test was administered in the last meeting after the treatment to find out whether the statement that contributes in any way to the speaking skill of the students in the experimental class is higher than the control class or there is a significant difference between the results of the experimental class and the control class. In this research, the researcher used documentation as a data collection method to get the visual and audio data that the researcher analyzed. Whereas documentation is a medium used to extract information from the written language of a document (for example: books, magazine, rule, memo and others).

The researcher used the documentation method to get detail information about students' speaking skill, Documentation here about the score of students' speaking skill at grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung which is obtained from the English Teacher.

Research Instrument

  • Instrument Blueprint

The instrument used in the observation method was observation guidance, as follows; Observation of the strategy used by the teacher in teaching the speaking process, Observation of the sketch of the site, Observation of the established order, Observation on the construction of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung. Instrument blueprint in this study is an illustration of the test consisting of the indication of each variable.

SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung is located on Jl. Raya Sekampung No.57, Giri Klopomulyo village which has a width of about 5790 m2. The vision and mission of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung 1. The vision of Junior High School Muhammadiyah Sekampung. SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung has a satisfactory facilities to support both the learning process and extracurricular program it offers some extracurricular such as.

Preliminary examination result of students in the experimental class in the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung. There is no positive and significant effect of using Spelling Bee Game Media on students' speaking skills in the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung. On the other hand, if toobserved is less than ttable (no positive effect) and observed <. It can be concluded that the use of Spelling Bee Game Media has a positive effect on the speaking skills of students in the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung.

The hypothesis applied in this current research is that there is a positive impact of using Spelling Bee Game Media on the speaking skills of students in the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung. This means that there is a positive impact of using Spelling Bee Game Media on. After analyzing the data in hypothesis testing, the researcher found that the observed critical value is 17.574.

It can be concluded that the use of contextual teaching and learning (CTL) has a significant impact on the speaking skills of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung. The hypothesis applied in this current study is that the use of Spelling Bee Game Media has a significant impact on the writing skills of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung. It means that the use of Spelling Bee Game Media has a significant impact on the speaking skills of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung.

In other words, there is a positive and significant influence of Spelling Bee Game Media on the speaking skills of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammdiyah Sekampung.

Limitations

Conclusion

The teacher should choose an excellent media in the teaching of English, especially in the speaking class, so that the student can participate more fully in the class and understand the material delivered by the teacher, because through an excellent media in teaching and learning can automatically improve the student's motivation in the learning process and try their best to accept the material taught by the teacher. The students should be more active in learning English, if they do not understand the lesson delivered by their teacher, they should ask the teacher. The researcher greatly expects that this study can make a contribution to the school, such as a good inspiration for further studies in learning to speak.
