From the Desk of the Interim Dean/ADFA
In June, we had a highly successful faculty develop- ment program.
Dr. Krista Longtin, from the School of Medicine, dis- cussed creating a culture of peer review of teaching.
Her session was interactive and created an oppor-
tunity for IUSD faculty to discuss how we might im p r ov e our
teaching through developing our program of peer review. I hope to continue this discussion in the fall semester by bringing together a group of faculty members who would like to help OFA develop the IUSD Peer Review program. If you are interested in participating on a development committee, please email me at [email protected].
The afternoon faculty develop programming had two concurrent tracks. Thanks to speaker Dr.
Dominique Galli, many of our faculty complet- ed the National Research Mentoring Network
“Level 1 Entering Mentoring” Train- ing better known at IUPUI as
“Mentoring Dialogues.” Our other afternoon speakers provided valua- ble information on obtaining funding (Dr. Gabe Chu), using test coding in Examsoft to unlock actionable in- sights in your student assessment (Dr. David Albright, Dr. Kyle Kra- mer, and David
Zahl), and r e c o g n i z i n g bias and ineq- uity in assess-
Mich ig an ).
T h e s e p r e s e n t a - tions were enlightening and well received.
The second day of programming was equally informative. The speak- ers were from the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses. We began the morning learning how to write better SMART goals for ourselves.
This will prove helpful as we exam- ine this year’s goals and as we create goals for
the fu- t u r e . Two of
t h e
presenta-
tions were devoted to improving our courses by developing course materials that are more inclusive. I particularly found it interesting that the layout of a table can impact stu- dents’ learning when they need to use an accessibility reader due a learning disability or impairment.
Based on what I learned, I will keep those facts in mind as I design fur- ther tables.
Sean Stone’s presentation regard- ing research metrics and citation management shed light on ways we can improve our impact. These were extremely valuable tips to help us improve our reputation at the national level, an important factor in promotion. The day ended with Drs.
Jeff Platt, Waldemar Polido, and Chandler Walker providing editorial insights on getting articles published.
The participants had great questions for the panel. The experience of our three editors gave all of us valuable information to help us get our next manuscript published.
tations on assessing students in the preclinical setting (Drs. Lisa Willis and Michele Kirkup), developing cased-based assessments (Dr. Ange- la Ritchie), and improving course accessibility by using Anthology Ally, a tool with Canvas (Sarah Herpt). I was so impressed by the level of all the presentations. This was valuable information. I hope our IUSD faculty who presented will consider submit- ting their presentation to ADEA or the Journal of Dental Education. For those of you who could not attend any or all of these presentations, please access the OFA Canvas site where the recorded presentations have been posted.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge all the faculty at IUSD who have worked tirelessly over the last aca- demic year. Our faculty do so many things to make our institution suc- cessful, which impacts our students and our profession. Often, many of these activities go unrecognized. It is not only important for our faculty to be acknowledge for their efforts, but that we celebrate them with the greater IUSD community. This was the purpose for the Recognition Dinner held at the Eiteljorg Museum on June 20, 2023. Using the infor- mation obtained from Digital Measures, a Faculty Recognition Compendium was created and pub- lished to acknowledge and celebrate those faculty and their activities.
Please contact my office if you would like a copy of this. Additional- ly, full-time and adjunct faculty were recognized with awards for their teaching. On page three of this newsletter, you can read about the recipients of the IDA Outstanding Teacher and Faculty Member of the Year awards, and page nine details the recipients of the IUSD Adjunct

Several prestigious University awards are available for quali- fied faculty. Nominations must be submitted electronically and are due by Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 5:00 pm along with supporting documentation.
The available University-level awards in- clude:
Distinguished Professorship: The most prestigious academic appointment IU can offer is a Distinguished Professorship.
The rank of distinguished professor recog- nizes the most exceptional and renowned faculty in the areas of research and creative activity. It is awarded to faculty in recogni- tion of outstanding scholarship, artistic or literary distinction. Distinguished Professors have achieved national and international prominence within their field of study through election into disciplinary and nation- al or international academic societies, exten- sive external funding, and high impact re- search publications or artistic contributions.
Nominations may be made by faculty, alum- ni, and students, among others, and are evaluated by a committee. Self- nominations are not accepted. If you are successfully nominated, you will need to prepare a dossier.
Distinguished Teaching Awards:
These awards recognize those members of the IU faculty who have excelled in class- room engagement, pedagogy, and curriculum development. Recipients of these awards will receive a one-time supplemental pay of

Global Impact Research Grant
Congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth Simpson, Clinical Assistant Profes- sor, Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care, and Car-
olyn Hasser, HR Business Partner, on their selection to the IUPUI campus’ leadership program Next Generation 2.0 as two mem- bers of the 18-member cohort!
The IUPUI Next Generation 2.0 program is a 9-month leadership development pro- gram dedicated to the preparation of histor- ically underrepresented faculty and staff for positions of leadership and opportunities for advancement in higher education. Estab- lished in 2015, the program builds upon the success of a previous 2009 leadership pro- gram, “Next Generation @IUPUI” while drawing inspiration from the national HERS Institute model. The program is also aligned with IUPUI Strategic Plan goals to “develop
our faculty and staff” and “promote an in- clusive campus climate.”
Next Gen 2.0 serves as a pathway to insti- tutional leadership opportunities as it seeks to address the need for succession planning and for increasing diverse representation among administrative ranks. Program partic- ipants are identified as both emerging and established leaders interested in seeking leadership opportunities at IUPUI or profes- sional development to enhance their cur- rent administrative roles.
Full-time, tenure-track eligible faculty at IUPUI, IUPUC and IUFW are invited to apply to the Global Impact Research Grant.
The goal of this grant program is to provide a limited number of high-potential awards that propose interdisciplinary mechanisms to tackle issues that align with the UN Sus- tainable Development Goals. While there are 17 distinct goals, the SDGs are also indivisible, and they require interdisciplinary and transnational research that is trans- formative and comprehensive.
Proposals that integrate the use of the IU Global Gateways, including hosting at least one activity (such as a workshop, confer- ence, or public event), may be eligible for an additional supplement of up to $5,000 from the Office of the Vice President of Interna- tional Affairs. To apply, please submit a separate application for a Global Gateway Grant indicating the GIRG grant as the source of matching funds. The Global Gate- way Grant provides matching support of up to $5,000 for activities – such as work-
shops, symposia, public talks, and artistic performances – that take place at one or more of IU's Global Gateway offices in Bangkok, Beijing, Berlin, Mexico City, and New Delhi.
Applications open October 6, 2023 and close December 1, 2023. For more infor- mation and to apply, please visit https://
international.iupui.edu/global-learning/
grants/index.html.
For questions, please contact the IUPUI Office of International Affairs.

O F F I C E O F F A C U L T Y A F F A I R S P A G E 8
In 1885, German psychologist Hermann Ebbing- haus was the first to hypothesize and study the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve. His work demon- strated that the information obtained by learners is lost exponentially after a learning event if no steps are taken to enhance retention.
However, when active efforts are made to re- engage learners with the information (repetition or re-exposure) the degree of information loss is greatly reduced.
One of the pri- m a r y goals of the Office of Faculty A f f a i r s (OFA) is to pre- sent new knowledge, concepts, and techniques to enhance your abilities as members of our diverse learning community. But as the work by E b b i n g h a u s
highlights, we often attend a pr ogra mm in g or professional de v e lop m e n t sessions but take no action thereafter to employ the new knowledge
in our daily activities or attempt to retainer the information. Ever hear anyone say, “Yes, it was a great session but what are we going to do with it…” or “I enjoyed the program but I’m not sure how I
can use it to help me fulfill my role at the school…” This is a major concern and a critical issue that the OFA would like to address through my new newsletter section, Bridges to Success.
In this area, faculty will be presented with a monthly challenge that will ask them to actively recall and utilize information presented at one of our professional development programs throughout the year. These challenges might also encourage faculty to complete activities that will support their overall growth and/or preparation for promotion. The ultimate goals are to create activities that will help strengthen your ability to assimilate and retain new infor- mation, as well as enhance your overall professional growth.
For our August Bridges to Success challenge, faculty are asked to identify one fall of 2023 Canvas course or lecture within a course and review its accessibility using the Ally Course Accessibility Re- port tool. This report assesses the content in a course or lecture and provides the course
director/lecturer with guidance on how to make it more accessible for all student learners.
The goal of this chal- lenge is to raise your overall course/lecture
accessibility score as high as possible. Report scores above 70% and the color green indicate course material that is more accessible for students (as shown in the provided image).
If you missed the June 2023 Professional Development lecture entitled, “Improving Course Accessibility: Introduction to Anthology Ally” by Sarah Herpst or need a refresher on how to utilize the Accessibility Report in Canvas, please access the content on the OFA Canvas site and follow the path (Modules → 2023 IUSD Facul- ty Development Program→ Improving Course Accessibility).
We hope you find these monthly challenges an effective way to enhance your information retention and strategy for building the bridges to your future success.

At the 2023 Faculty Recognitions Dinner, six IUSD adjunct faculty were announced as recipients of the 2023 Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award.
Dr. Carl Bell, adjunct clinical associate pro- fessor in the Pediatric Dentistry department,
was the evening’s first recipient of the award. Dr.
Bell’s nominators shared that, “Since 2003, come rain or shine, Dr. Bell has made the trip from Columbus, Indiana with- out fail.” His unwavering dedication is com- plemented by his amazing teaching presence.
“In the clinic, Dr. Bell has a calm disposition, is well-liked by all, and is always willing to assist the dental students.”
The next recipient was Professor Marisa Cornewell, adjunct clinical lecturer, Allied Programs, Dental
Hygiene Division.
P r o f e s s o r Cornewell's nom- inators praised her for deep pas- sion for education
and her willingness to manage pharmacology for dental hygiene students, one of the most difficult courses in the curriculum. With great vision and diligence, she has instituted
several curricular changes that have en- hanced student learning and success.
Next to receive an award was Dr.
Larry Crisafulli, adjunct clinical assistant professor in the department of Biomedical
Sciences and Comprehensive Care. His nom- inator remarked, “Larry’s compassion, kind- ness, and selfless nature is evident to all, and his heart….is always focused on the students and patients.” Additionally, “Larry is the ultimate team player and truly stands out as a shining star.”
The next adjunct faculty member to receive the award was Dr. Jay Hughes, adjunct clini- cal assistant professor in the department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics. Dr.
Hughes’ nominators had this to say about him: “Dr. Hughes has been an invaluable faculty member in the department and played an instrumental role in the development of our students’ knowledge.” Also, “He is a shining example of
a world-class ad- junct dental educa- tor and is one of the best faculty I have worked with throughout the
dental school. He makes all the residents feel as a valued team member and is constantly looking for ways to better the residents and program. I cannot say enough wonderful things about him!”
The next awardees were unable to be pre- sent at the dinner, but were honored none- theless. Both are from the Endodontics de- partment, and Dr. Spolnik accepted their awards as Chair. The first recipient was Dr.
Mychel Vail, ad- junct clinical assis- tant professor. Dr.
Vail’s nominator praised her for the loyalty and reliabil- ity that she has
demonstrated over the past 14 years. She is a steadfast member of the graduate endo- dontic admission committee and has been extremely generous with her time in helping review applications for our graduate pro- gram. The last recipient was Dr. Paul Sahni, adjunct clinical assistant professor. His nomi- nator highlighted that, “not only does he drive over 2 hours from Champaign, Illinois but he never misses his scheduled clinic as- signment!”
We once again congratulate all of the recip- ients of the IUSD Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award. We thank you for your invaluable contributions to IUSD.

EPIC Taking Action Challenge Grants
In 2022, IUPUI received first prize recognition in the National Sci- ence Foundation's Taking Action: COVID-19 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Challenge. The prize came with a $25,000 award, and in fall 2022, suggestions were solicited from the IUPUI community on how best to make use of it.
As a result, the EPIC Taking Action Challenge Grants, adapted from the name of our original NSF ADVANCE Grant, Project EPIC, for which EPIC represents "evidence-informed promotion of inclu- sive climate," has been launched. Grants must be devoted to pro- gramming, conference travel, or other activities aimed at directly or indirectly supporting women faculty at IUPUI, particularly women from marginalized backgrounds, in their professional development and advancement. Examples include participating in the following:
Faculty Success Program or other related activities through the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity
Equity in STEM Community Convening hosted by WEPAN and
ARC Network initiative
Faculty Women of Color in the Academy Conference
AAC&U TIDES Institute
AAC&U Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) STEM Leadership Insti- tute
HERS Equity-Minded Leadership Series
Applications will be accepted through 2023 and will be reviewed monthly. To apply for funding, please complete the webform online via https://academicaffairs.iupui.edu/Diversity/advance/nsf-taking- action-challenge/epic-taking-challenge-grants, including up to a one- page summary of how the grant would be of benefit to you directly, or to women in your department or program. Typically, grants will be capped at $1,500, and a brief statement of support (ideally ac- companied by a pledge of partial financial support) from a dean or department chair is requested.
