From the Desk of the EAD/ADFA

We reached another milestone in the history of IUSD on March 2nd, with the dedication of the James J. Fritts Clini- cal Care Center. As we all paraded into the sunlit building, following the ceremony over which President Michael McRobbie presid- ed, we could see and feel the atmos- phere of evolution in design and education. This was evident in the pristine clinical facilities, the beautiful and stunning photography donated by Dr. Lehman, and the name plaques on every unit and through- out the building, which is a testa- ment to the generosity of donors.

These things show that we are in- deed poised to move confidently into the educational era of the 21st century. The rest is up to us.

March has also been a month of annual conferences and international engagement. Chancellor Paydar has had a program of making two strate- gic international visits per year on behalf of the campus. The first was the delegation he led to Mexico in January, in which IUSD was promi- nent. In March, he visited Saudi Ara- bia for the first time. We have been actively engaged in a collaborative partnership with King Saud Universi- ty for several years, and so were central to this engagement. Our own alumnus, Dr. Nawaf Labban, now Chair of Prosthodontics at KSU, was the key negotiator and organizer of the visit, and we spent time discussing our partnership and its evolution with Professor Ahmed Al Kahtani, Dean of the College Of Dentistry. How- ever, a major focus of the visit to Riyadh at this time was to present the summary initial data of the first

Kingdom, to His Excellency the Minister of Health and his team.

Central to the design and conduct of the study have been Dr. Constantin Yiannoutsos from our School of Public Health and Dr. Angeles Mar- tinez-Mier. Significant kudos to IU,

the campus and our school. Dr. Mar- tinez-Mier went on to discuss potential extensions and other projects that may evolve from the base study that amassed more than 30 million items of data. Credit must also go to Dr.

Naif Abogazalah, currently a PhD student at IUSD, for his crucial role in orchestrating much of the trip.

The social highlight was a large alumni reunion, hosted by Chancel- lor Paydar and our schools, at which dentistry was well represented. I should em- phasize that Saudi Arabia is home to our largest single group of international gradu- ate dental alumni, and as always, it was a thrill to link up again. Overall, we look with positive anticipation at our increasing involvement with higher education in the Kingdom, also with other institutions, where many of our alumni are faculty, and from where we recruit first class students.

March is the month of ADEA and AADR, at both of which IUSD field- ed faculty, staff and student dele- gates. At ADEA in particular, our

student body has made an impact. Dr. Tim Treat remains as Board Mem- ber for Students, Residents and Fellows, and both Allison Williams

to senior roles.

Through infor- mal discussion, a theme of hallway conver- sation was senior administrative suc- cession planning, with a large number of dental school deanships open, our own coming up soon, with Dean

Williams having formally announced his plan to step away in June 2019.

After returning, we had a visit from Ms.

Beth West, Director

of the IU Gateway in Mexico City. It was her first visit to IUSD in this role, and an opportunity for us to showcase the

Fritts facility.

We had met with her

during the January visit to Mexico, and anyone who may be interested in holding a meeting at the facility, or learning more about any of the IU Gateways, please do come and ask.

Finally, a heads up on an addition we will be making to future OFA newsletters: one of the major threads throughout the ADEA meeting was the increasing im- portance and prominence of IPE in the curricula of health sciences edu- cation. Dr. Laura Romito has been a significant leader on our behalf with the campus program, and has de- scribed ongoing developments and increasing activity in the program.

As such, she will be submitting monthly updates for us all through the portal of this newsletter, in or- der that we are fully informed and can see opportunity for greater

Transitions & Recruitment

In March, two of IU School of Dentistry’s colleagues took on new positions. Dr. David

Montes, effective March 1, became Director of the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program and clinical

associate professor in the department of Oral Surgery &

Hospital Dentistry. Previously a visiting clinical associate professor within the department, in his new capacity, Dr. Montes’ role will include oversight of the OMFS resident selection process, facilitation of optimal oral surgery clinical experiences for the Residents, and fostering of collaborative relationships with other clinical departments within the dental school, the Oral Maxillofacial Residency Program and our partnering hospitals. His teaching responsibilities will include didactic and clinical instruction of oral surgery residents, serving as a preceptor for the residents in the

graduate and pre-doctoral oral surgery clinics and other hospital activities, and mentoring residents in clinically-based projects with scholarly outcomes.

Dr. Julianne Sotomil, a December 2017 graduate from

the IUSD Master of Science program in Prosthodontics and who has been serving

temporarily as staff in the department of Prosthodontics, has become a visiting clinical assistant professor in the department of Prosthodontics, effective March 15.

His role will include pre-clinical and c l i n i c a l i n s t r u c t i o n i n prosthodontics for predoctoral students as well as instruction to a d v a n c e d e d u c a t i o n i n prosthodontics students.

Dean John Williams announced last month his retirement as dean of the IU School of Dentistry effective June 30, 2019, pursuant to

Indiana University’s retirement policy for executives, high policymakers, and administrative officers. He, after an 11-month sabbatical, will continue in his position at IUSD as a tenured full professor working in oral health policy, dental workforce and technology. More information about the national search process being conducted by the IUPUI campus will be shared in the coming months.

Congratulations to Drs. Montes, Sotomil and Dean Williams!!

The Search & Screen Committee for the clinical assistant/associate profes sor v acanc y in t he department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics identified two candidates for final interviews.

Interview announcements will be released to the school in early April. Candidates for the clinical assistant professor position in the department of Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology are currently in the pre-screen phase.

Dr. Gabriel Chu re- ports the following from the 2018 ADEA and AADR meetings:

This year’s ADEA and AADR annual meet- ings took place in Orlando and Fort Lauder- dale from March 16-20 and March 20-24, respectively. In total, between ADEA and AADR, IUSD faculty and students delivered 42 presentations, including 18 from faculty, 17 from graduate students, and 7 from DDS students. The presentations showcased the broad teaching and research activities at IUSD and generated many fruitful discussions with the dental community.

IUSD also hosted a school reception in AADR which was well attended by IUSD colleagues, students, collaborators, alumni and friends. It provided a good occasion to network and reconnect with colleagues from other dental schools. With the support from Dean Williams, Drs. Angela Bruzzaniti, Ga- briel Chu and Richard Gregory hosted a student night out at AADR to encourage the students to keep pursuing new knowledge through their research activities.

Three exciting news items from the meet- ings: Dr. Tim Treat received the Chair of

ADEA Board of Director Cita- tion in ADEA. Sung-Kyung JoAn Kim, third year DDS student working with Dr. Bruzzaniti, was awarded an AADR Student Re- search Fellowship. Finally, Dr.

Angela Bruzzaniti won the AADR National Student Re- search Group Faculty Mentor Award. Congratulations to all for their achievements!

The 2019 ADEA Session and

AADR Meeting will be held from March 16- 19 in Chicago, and from June 19-22 in Van- couver, respectively.

ADEA & AADR Highlights

Oversight Changes for IUSD Lab

The Indiana University School of Dentistry’s Mineralized Tis- sue and Histology Research Laboratory (MTHRL) recently transitioned to new oversight.

Dr. Gabriel Chu, associate dean for Research at the IU School of Dentistry, will be providing that administra- tive leadership. This oversight shift is associ- ated with IUSD’s Strategic Plan for Research, which has been guided by the calendar year 2017 work of IUSD’s Research Planning Task Force.

Dr. Achint Utreja, assistant professor in the

department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics and director of the MTHRL, wel- comes the change, sharing that “the in- creased engagement of the Office of Re- search in the Histology lab will be beneficial to the students as well as the faculty involved in research at IUSD. The MTHRL has long been supporting research at the dental school by providing histology services to predoctoral and graduate students.” Dr.

Utreja said further that he anticipates the change will attract more students interested in research. Furthermore, because of the recent hire of research analyst Tinali Zhu, he

is optimistic about the opportunities for research assistance to students and investiga- tors both on and off campus.

Tianli Zhu shared it was the “reputation of IUSD and [the] academic atmosphere of its research labs” that excited her about joining the team. She brings to the position not only a strong background in histology and pathol- ogy, but also significant academic and indus- trial experiences.

Dr. Chu, pleased to see IUSD rise 11 places in the National Institute of Dental and Crani- ofacial Research-to-dental school funding in 2016, sees that as only a beginning.

IUSD Diversity Lecture Series

On March 27, the Indiana University School of Dentis- try held its first of three 2018 diversity lecture series events. The first of its speakers, Mrs. Mercedes Cannon, acting co-interim director and asso- ciate director of the Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis Office of Adaptive Educational Services, spoke during the noon hour about the importance of equi- table and inclusive opportunities for students with documented disabilities. As Mrs. Can- non in “interview” shared, the “university’s [embracing] and celebration of diversity can contribute to the healing of one of America's greatest vulnerable members, and in so do- ing, maintain diversity in the number of indi- viduals and differently abled-body students who achieve graduation.”

Her lecture, titled “From Learning Adapta- bility to Inclusivity & Equity,” brought the

facts, confronted the issues, and compelled all attendees to consider more openly and honestly how collectively we need some measure of dependable adaptive support.

Poignantly illustrating how student, employ- ee, and institution are protected and benefit- ed by adherence to federal and institutional policies for students verifiably requiring adaptive educational services, Cannon’s presentation and call to action raised post- presentation questions. For example, should we all more committedly look inwardly at how our core values are reflected in our corporate and common practices? If we authentically espouse patient-centered care, then when we offer and support those with a learning impairment, even as it concerns academic and career opportunity, are we not at our best when we provide such care in a manner that fosters their fullest health/

potential? Does not the sensitivity we model internally—within our school and/or in our

private practices—manifest itself in our clin- ics?

Referencing the slogan “Nothing About Us Without Us,” in “interview” Mrs. Cannon asked, “Individuals with disabilities have spoken and continue to speak for them- selves, but are we listening?” Accommoda- tions, comparable to patient-centered care, matter. Many patients treated in our clinics and practices know the impact of having been marginalized and made to feel

“invisible.” Who better to extend healing to those individuals than a professional who can empathize with and appropriately walk alongside them (and others of their (interprofessional) health care team) as both allies and inspirations? For all of us accom- modations matter, creating equity, diversity, inclusion, healing. IU School of Dentistry is proud to be a learning institution and health care facility preparing its students, employ- ees, and patients for a healthier future.

The Trustees’ Teaching Award honors facul- ty members who have had a positive impact on learning through the direct teaching of students. Award recipients must have demonstrated a sustained level of teaching excellence in the form of documented stu- dent learning and must have completed at least three years of service at IUPUI/IUSD in a full-time faculty appointment.

This year, the School of Dentistry awarded four TTAs: two for tenure- track/tenured faculty and two for clinical-track faculty.

Dr. Laura Romito, Depart- ment of Biomedical and Ap- plied Sciences, and Dr.

Angela Bruzzaniti, Depart- ment of Biomedical and Applied Sciences, were named as the tenure-track/

tenured TTA recipients.

Dr. Romito has received the TTA award multiple times during her career at IUSD. Dr. Bruzzaniti is also the Director of Student Re-

search and this is her first time as a recipient of the award.

Dr. Kamolphob Phasuk, Department of Prosthodon-

tics, and Dr. Paul Reifes, Department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry and Dental

Public Health, were named as the clinical track TTA recipi- ents.

Dr. Phasuk currently serves as the Director of Pre- doctoral Implant Prostho- dontics, and is receiving the TTA for the first time. Like Dr. Phasuk, Dr. Reifeis is also a first time recipient of this prestigious award.

Each awardee will receive $2,500 for the TTA and will be recognized at the annual campus Chancellor’s Academic Honors Con- vocation on Friday, April 20, 2018, at 3:00 pm in the Hine Hall Auditorium.

Congratulations to all four on receiving this teaching award!
