Many people use written language in a less formal and more relaxed way. Why?
Does this development have advantages and disadvantages?
Recent decades have experienced the growth of informal language in different contexts. In my perspective, I am more inclined to the view that its drawbacks outweigh its benefits There are two main reasons many people prefer the informal language in contemporary society. First and foremost, the development of online massage devices. These applications assist people in connecting with others without meeting directly. To illustrate, Messenger is currently a popular app in Viet Nam and people can use it to send texts to each other anytime just by connecting to the internet instead of having an appointment. Secondly, people, who often chat in short informal conversations every day, tend not to care much about formality and need to write quickly. As a result, applying simple and casual language in writing daily becomes more common and brings them about a large impact on the written language.
However, this prevalence of informal written forms also gives some vital negatives.
First, people might forget how to write a formal letter. In fact, the present generation gets used to texting as a large number of young adults do not know how to write a formal letter to apply for a job. They write these emails like texting to a friend and might use idioms, typos, abbreviated words, etc, inappropriately. Consequently, employers may underestimate young people because of their unprofessional writing language.
Furthermore, the popularity of the casual language can adversely affect the academic performance of students. Many students today have a tendency in using informal words and slang in their tests and assignments that require a higher level of formality. This contributes to lower academic results for students and overall learning progress in their school.
In conclusion, a large number of people use language in a simple and informal manner these days due to the advent of the internet. However, I personally believe that this trend has more downsides regarding learning outcomes and job applications.
