Analysis at the level of words: Mills says that language can produce our perception of gender roles and sexism or is that the consequences of sexism in society are controversial issues. In the next chapter 'the fall', the generic pronouns mentioned 'men' in "where panic attacks turn men into doctors to keep me calm" also follow the specific male characters that is, 'doctor' (pg,70). Another proverb, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach," naturalizes a number of different ideological messages, Mills.

Mills focuses on characterization by analyzing “the way stereotypical notions often shape the language choices made when describing characters in fiction…”. At the phrase and sentence level, multiple sentences indicate that the text in the book has a specific gender. At the discourse level, the major difference between men and women is that men are always depicted as being in charge of women, while women, for example, are always described in terms of body parts and the one to be blamed and controlled; “the men will get angry and fight” (for men) “if I just “learn to act like a lady” (for women), “slut shaming” (for women), “virgin praise” (for women).
