‘Easy oil’ in prolific basins around Sundaland margin, such as in the Sumatra-Java back arc basins, the Malay Basin and the basin around Borneo is getting scarce.
Production from existing fields is declining and new discoveries are getting smaller. To find additional reserves, geoscientists need to observe deeper potential, which is closely related to older stratigraphy. As less data is available from older stratigraphy, geoscientists are forced to use geological models more and it becomes necessary for them to exchange ideas and share experiences.
On 14 September, the Indonesian Geologists Association (IAGI) community in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, together with the Geological Society of Malaysia organized a workshop titled
“Palaeogene of the Eastern Margin of Sundaland: Understanding the remaining hydrocarbon potential”
which took place in the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. The meeting was supported by the Institute of Ocean & Earth Sciences, University of Malaya.
This workshop was chaired by Dr.
Meor Hakif Amir Hassan (University of Malaya) and Fithra Harris Darmawan (IAGI) with Dr.
Mazlan Madon (GSM) as advisor.
Petroedge was the key sponsor for this event. About 100 participants with industry and academic background participated in this workshop.
The objective of the workshop was to discuss tectonic evolution and stratigraphy of Palaeogene in the eastern margin of Sundaland and its impact to hydrocarbon exploration in the region. Various experts were involved and case studies were shared in the workshop, which led us to detailed discussions on the exploration
prospects in the eastern margin of Sundaland.
Berita Sedimentologi this year (Numbers 35, 36 and 37) aim to accommodate papers related to the topic. Selected speakers were invited to submit their papers and additional relevant papers also strengthen the content of these volumes. In this volume Roy &
Banerjee wrote an article related to Andaman Flysch Group based on their field work. Kessler and Jong shared their view on Eocene tectonic processes in South China Sea and Prof. Tjia provided his field documentation on Northwest Borneo outcrop.
With this rich content of volume 35, we hope you have good time reading the articles. More papers are still welcome for the coming volumes.
Happy reading, Herman Darman Deputy Chief Editor

he forum was founded in 1995 as the Indonesian Sedimentologists Forum (FOSI). This organization is a communication and discussion forum for geologists, especially for those dealing with sedimentology and sedimentary geology in Indonesia.
The forum was accepted as the sedimentological commission of the Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI) in 1996. About 300 members were registered in 1999, including industrial and academic fellows, as well as students.
FOSI has close international relations with the Society of Sedimentary Geology (SEPM) and the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS).
Fellowship is open to those holding a recognized degree in geology or a cognate subject and non- graduates who have at least two years relevant experience.
FOSI has organized 2 international conferences in 1999 and 2001, attended by more than 150 inter- national participants.
Most of FOSI administrative work will be handled by the editorial team. IAGI office in Jakarta will help if necessary.
The official website of FOSI is:
http://www.iagi.or.id/fosi/
Any person who has a background in geoscience and/or is engaged in the practising or teaching of geoscience or its related business may apply for general membership. As the organization has just been restarted, we use LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) as the main data base platform. We realize that it is not the ideal solution, and we may look for other alternative in the near future. Having said that, for the current situation, LinkedIn is fit for purpose. International members and students are welcome to join the organization.
