Dean’s Update

January – March 2011

Student Activities/Accomplishments:

Kisha Virgil, a student in the PhD program, was selected to participate as a conference intern for the 21st Annual Art and Science of Health Promotion Conference, March 21-25, Colorado Springs, CO. Ms Virgil was among 15 interns at the conference attended by 600 health promotion and wellness specialists and researchers.

The interns were individually introduced at the conference during the opening keynote address and were characterized as “the future leaders in wellness”.

Lauren Loper, Dietetic Intern, contributed four articles which will appear in upcoming publications from Hendricks Regional Medical Center in Danville. The articles are “Kids in the Kitchen”, “Updated Dietary Guidelines”, “Festive Fiesta Cooking” and “Spring has Sprung (Farmer’s Markets.” Laura solved the ongoing

“carrot issue” by identifying a softer, prettier mini baby carrot for use on the room service menu. The new product will replace a carrot that patient’s described as “hard” and complained about frequently. Perhaps

Lauren’s most lasting project at Hendricks is the detailed, explicit equipment competencies she developed which are the foundation for all employee training on maintenance and safe use of all kitchen equipment at Hendricks Regional Medical Center.

The PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences degree program admitted four new students in spring 2011:

Waleed Alzahrani, Raid Al-Zhranel, Alaa Bugis, and Capi Scheidler. We now have 18 active students enrolled in the program.

30 current DPT students and recent alumni attended the American Physical Therapy Association National Combined Sections Meeting in February. Physical Therapy students, faculty, and alumni provided talks, presented research, and attended sessions throughout the four day event.

Brian Duff, OT student, won the Carol D. Nathan Leadership Award

Sage Weaver, Kimberly Biberstein, Jackson Gall, and James Kinder (OT students) were awarded the Carol Duke Nathan Occupational Therapy Fellowship Scholarship.

Six OT students (Betsy Powers, Sage Weaver, Holly Isler, Kimberly Biberstein, Kimberly Bayston, Brock Gorman) received the Belzer Fellowship Scholarship.
