Executive Summary

Mahidol-Norway Capacity Building Initiative for ASEAN

Brief Project Description:

The Norwegian Embassy of Thailand in collaboration with Mahidol University have agreed to offer full scholarships for postgraduate studies (60 Master and 40 Doctoral scholarships) in 4 areas to Myanmar and ASEAN citizens as a measure to strengthen the process of capacity building in these countries. Under this scholarship project, qualified candidates will be enrolled in postgraduate study programmes at Mahidol University in Thailand in the following priority fields, including;

a) life science and health;

b) social and population science;

c) human rights, peace studies and disability studies; and d) environmental science and engineering

Target Group:

The main target groups include faculty members in public universities and government officials in public sector. In addition, workforce in the related non-governmental or private institutions that play important role in the country development is also eligible to apply under this scholarship scheme.

Candidates from rural areas, persons with disability, female workforce will also be given a strong consideration towards enrollment.

Student Enrollment:

The process of student enrolment will be conducted in 2 consecutive

academic year starting from August 2015 to December 2016. Both active and

passive recruitment will be implemented. For active recruitment, Mahidol

University will conduct active recruitment from its academic network. In

addition, a formal announcement through the Embassy, Mahidol University

and the Faculty of Graduate School websites as well as other regular

channels of communication will be implemented. The admission criteria will

be set forth by the University and the Admission Committee of each

participating programme. In addition to the usual application process, on-site

recruitment and/or interviews may also be conducted, if necessary. The

project aims to start enrolling students in August 2015 for both Master’s and

Doctoral programmes.

Application Process

Eligible candidates can either communicate with the programme director or programme secretary and submit all required documentation directly to the programme or apply online via:

www.grad.mahidol.ac.th/norway2015-2016 . Please visit the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ website to learn more about the programme curriculum and special requirements at www.grad.mahidol.ac.th. The general eligibility criteria and required documentation are in Annex II.

Duration of Study:

For the majority of Master’s programmes offered in Mahidol University, the duration of study is within 24 months for full-time enrollment. Certain programme may require shorter time, such as the Master of Primary Health Care Management. Candidates are advised to check the programme curriculum and syllabi for additional information on coursework and dissertation requirements. The doctoral degree programme normally requires 3 years of full-time study. In order to complete a doctoral degree, students are required to obtain at least GPA 3.5, publish an article in an internationally- refereed journal and complete a doctoral dissertation in topics contributing to the development of the candidate’s home country. Students will also be encouraged to conduct some parts of research fieldworks in their respective home countries provided that the research design can be geared towards that direction.

Scholarship Coverage:

The scholarship is inclusive of the followings:
