One of the three cross-cutting commitments that characterize IUPUI's mission and planning themes is "to ensure diversity." A primary goal in support of Excellence in Teaching and Learning is to "attract and support a better prepared and a more diverse student population." The institution's Statement of Values includes this assurance: “We are committed to the personal and professional development of a diverse campus community of students, faculty and staff; to continuously improve its programs and services; and to build a strong, welcoming campus community for all.”. In July 2009, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) was established with a mission "to foster an inviting learning environment for faculty, staff and students who bring diverse human qualities, backgrounds, interests and viewpoints that serve to make IUPUI -to enrich society." The four dimensions of diversity and equity articulated as part of the university's Vision, Mission and Goals for Diversity include not only representative diversity for students, faculty and staff, but also curricular and co-curricular transformation, an inclusive campus climate and investment. of resources and commitment through the words and actions of campus leadership at all levels. Meetings are open to the public and anyone with an interest in the governance of the university may attend.
The Office of the Executive Vice President and Chancellor, Indianapolis, is the conduit through which IUPUI officers communicate formally with Indiana University's central administration. Links to both Faculty and Staff Councils are readily available from the Faculty and Staff view on the IUPUI home page. These topics are also covered in relevant sections of the IUPUI website where students can easily.
The Philanthropy Center was founded as a result of the convergence of two ideas. RCM policies to date have provided one percent of the annual state fiscal appropriation to the IUPUI chancellor for reallocation to campus priorities. Human resources are effectively deployed and financial resources are invested to improve the quality of the workforce at IUPUI.
Responses to the 2009 IUPUI Faculty Survey indicated that two-thirds of faculty were satisfied with "faculty development opportunities at IUPUI." This investment in the Planning and Institutional Improvement (PAII) division, which has been recognized for its work by four national organizations, is evidence of the importance placed on planning and evaluation at IUPUI. Over the years, student dissatisfaction with the social environment at IUPUI was instrumental in decisions to establish the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Life and to build the Campus Center and new student housing on campus.
The School of Nursing has further differentiated PUL-based learning outcomes for each level of undergraduate experience. Assessment in Medical School. The School of Medicine (SOM) is located in nine Centers for Medical Education (CME) across the state, from Evansville in the south to Gary and South Bend in the north. The Committee's activities are supported by staff in the Office of Planning and Institutional Improvement (PAII). The Electronic Personal Development Plan (ePDP). The ePDP combines the key elements of reflective electronic portfolios with the benefits of in-depth advising and has been successfully implemented in First Year Seminars at IUPUI with promising results. Supporting the faculty's use of technology in teaching and learning is central to the work of the SOL and of University Information Technology Services.
A unified curriculum and a common set of learning outcomes are supported for the different types of first-year seminars through the first-year seminar template. The template is periodically revised based on evaluation findings. Students generally find advising to be one of the most positive aspects of the first-year seminar. Improvements are also needed in the representation of diversity in the undergraduate curriculum after the first year.

The RISE initiative. The IUPUI Challenge Initiative's RISE (Research, International Experience, Service, Learning, Experiential Learning) initiative provides students with additional opportunities to enhance their learning about PUL and hone skills in research, discovery and application of knowledge. The program aims to "[support] the diverse needs of campus life" and "empower students to become engaged and inclusive leaders in their communities". The policy was approved by the voting members of the IFC and is included in the IUPUI Addendum to the Academic Handbook.
IUPUI's national commitment to civic engagement is not just part of the campus mission. Not least in terms of capacity building, civic engagement is very clearly the focus of the $1.25 billion IMPACT Campaign now underway – the largest in Indiana University's history. In another program to address science, engineering, math and technology shortages, in 2011 and 2012 the IUPUI Nanotechnology Discovery Academy (INDA) summer program is introducing high school students and their teachers to the "science of little ones". Already noted is IUPUI's economic impact as one of the largest employers (and purchasers and contractors) in the metropolitan area. So far, we have had no shortage of projects worth pursuing because our management units – Center for Service and Learning and Solution Center – communicate widely and our collaborative culture encourages peer-to-peer exchange among colleagues.
