Bitter Gulch station was on the plain twelve miles from the town itself, which had successfully resisted all the attempts of the railroad to disturb it. And yet the coming of the tri-weekly was heralded by great excitement for Bitter Gulch. It had been impossible to lay a straight track here on account of the quicksand; so when you looked down the track it looked like a giant snake winding its way to the station.
By this time, the rest of the "bys" were gathering with a look of wonder in their eyes that seemed to be asking the question. Throughout the rest of the day, the hotel was the main center of attraction in Bitter Gulch. 1"hat night there was a meeting of the citizens of Bitter Gulch in the back of "Walt" Pennington's store to handle the case of the two strangers.
They stayed with the station agent and left on the afternoon train on Friday, against the wishes of the residents of Bitter Gulch who came down to see them off. The next morning the inhabitants of Bitter Gulch awoke and quickly became excited, for on the first branch of the tree where the two strangers had sat during their afternoon sojourn in the Gulch, hung the body of "Bill".
