Chapter 1
BACKGROUND
The curriculum arrangement involved various component including lectures, students, alumni, stake holder, curriculum board, and faculty executives. This section discusses three study programs' structure and courses, in Mathematics. The curricula are designed based on vision, mission, and educational objectives of the Bachelor Program. The curricula meet the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (Regulation No. 73/2013 of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia), the National Standards for Higher Education (Regulation No. 44/2015 of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia), and the Brawijaya University Quality Standards (Regulation No. 1/2017 of Rector of Brawijaya University).
The learning content in the curricula is consolidated following the standard competencies of each professional association, that is the Physical Society of Indonesia (PSI) for Physics Program Study, the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) for Mathematics Program Study. The curricula are evaluated and redesigned every 4 (four) years to accommodate major changes. Minor revisions are possible during the implementation to improve the effectiveness of the curricula.
All the curricula are structured using a credit unit system (Regulation No. 232/2000 of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia). Every student has to take a minimum of 144 credits and a maximum of 160 credits to complete a bachelor’s degree. The total credits contain a combination of compulsory and elective subjects (courses). The curriculum is designed to be completed within eight semesters or four academic years. The maximum length of study is limited to 14 semesters or seven academic years.
The learning experiences are generally given through lectures, practical work, fieldwork,
community engagement experiences, and a final project. All of the learning experiences should
be comprehensively bringing the student's competence to level 6 of the Indonesian Quality
Framework. The lecture and practical work are primarily designed to gain students' knowledge
and problem-solving skills individually and in a team. Students gain practical experiences of
their competence during the fieldwork or internship (3 credits), which is done in off-campus
internship activities. The community engagement program (3 credits) is designed to allow
students to learn by contributing their real work to society. The final project weighted six
credits must be done in the last semester of the study. The final project report is written in the
form of an undergraduate thesis (“Skripsi”) and disseminated locally. The undergraduate thesis
(and seminar) provides the students with experience researching and communicating their work
in scientific and academic manners, which is important for continuing study or professional
work. The final exam or the comprehensive exam is carried out to evaluate all of the student
learning experience. Details of the workload, requirement, and regulation stated in the faculty
and study program handbooks.
To provide life experiences beyond campus and expand knowledge, students can join student exchange programs to partner universities (Regulation of Rector of Brawijaya University Number 208 of 2010). This program is implemented through internship, research, joint degree, and double degree programs. The concept of flexible learning curricula (Regulation of Rector Universitas Brawijaya Number 034 of 2020) gives students the freedom to take courses outside the study program or even outside the university. Credits earned by students from studies outside the study program or university will be recognized as valid credits, using the subject equivalence principle with case-by-case analysis. Unfortunately, the number of students who participate in the exchange program is still low. Prolonged study time and financial problems are two contributing factors. The program deals with this by omitting institutional fees during the exchange, providing leave during the exchange, providing financial assistance, improving socialization to potential students, and providing exchange programs as rewards for outstanding students at the national level.
The learning process's consistency with the learning plan described in the module
handbook, the learning process is monitored and evaluated by the Head of Study Program
through Quality Assurance Unit (Unit Jaminan Mutu. UJM). Monitoring is carried out for
lecturers (attendance and performance taken by online student questionnaire), for the course
process and material (course material and assessment method), and students (learning
attendance and their scores based on CLO and ILO). Assessment methods are designed in line
with the supported ILO to achieve the CLO described in each course's module handbook
https://matematika.ub.ac.id/s1-matematika/en/module-handbook-2/. The CLO- and ILO-based
scores from each subject can be extracted from the assessment results. The CLO and ILO scores
from a class and student questionnaires are used to make a course portfolio.
