TERTIARY FOSSIL PLANTS FROM THE REPUBLIC OF
HAITI.

next toCuba
isthelargest of theAntilles, is divided politically into the
Dominican
Republicand
theRepublic of Haiti.At
the invitation ofthe respec- tiveGovernments
the United States GeologicalSurvey
has, in the last few years,made
geologic studiesofthe islandunder
the direction of T.Wayland Vaughan.
Geologicand
paleozoologic data of great importancehave
been obtained,and
afew
collections offossilplants were also secured.Those from
theDominican
Republic, comprising smalland
for themost
part poorly preserved materials of Tertiary age, were describedby me
in a recent paper.*This paperis published
by
permission of the engineer in chief of the Republic of Haiti.The work

are also referred to the Miocene. In the absence of clearly defined stratigraphicevidenceIwould
be inclined to considerallthreelocalitiesas ofthe
same
age.Although
thepresentcollections are not conclusive, Iwould
be inclined to regard the fewMiocene
plants collected as pointing tolate, rather than earlyMiocene age.In addition to the
few
speciesnamed and
described in the follow- ingpages theMiocene beds at station 7544 contain severalfragments ofwhat
appear to be a species of Terminalia, apalm
ray,and
frag-ments
of six or eight species of dicotyledonswhich might
be readily determinable if a described fossil florawas known from
thisgeneral areaand
horizon.The
collectionfrom
station 7542 containsfrag-ments
of lauraceous leaves suggesting the genus Nectandra,and
a second distinctly lauraceous type ispresent at localityB
88 F.The
flora described is too small to be ofany
especial significance.It is, perhaps, superfluous to point to its
modern
faciesand
tropical character.The
nine species described, ofwhich
allbut two
are new,represent asmany
genera,sevenfamilies,and
asmany
orders.A
large
number
of forms thatmight
reasonably be expectedfrom
the late Tertiary of this region are conspicuously absent, notablyLegu-
minosaeand members
of themangrove
association. This appears tomean two
things, namely, the absence of tidalmud
flatsand
river estuaries,and
suggestssandy
or rocky shores. All of the leavesenumerated
areofstrand plantsand
allaremacerationresistingforms, indicating that the othernormal members
of the Tertiary strand flora failed of preservation, at least at the discovered localities.Family CHARACEAE.

This species is represented
by numerous
calcareousand
very fragile oogonia.Oogonium
circular in cross section; elliptical in profile, slightly fuller distad thanproximad;
almost twice as long as wide;somewhat
variable in size,which
rangesfrom
0.5 to 0.8 millimeterindiameter,and from
0.75 to 1.25 millimeters in length.Proximal pole with a thin pentagonal calcareous plug
which
isfre-quently broken away. Apical pole consisting of the tips of thefive cells
which
areenlargedand
slightly thickened.The
five cells of the wallmake
three revolutions, the spirals are hence low,and
are roundly furrowedbetween
the knife-edge extended keels of the cell margins.60466—

in association with a small fresh-water fauna atan
altitude of 160meters at the locality cited below.The
speciesis decribed as

hetijoquensis Berry^ of the Miocene of Venezuela,and

be a species of Blechnum,some

identical with it is also present in the Repnhlic of Haiti.The
latter material
shows
a leaf slightl}^ narrower than the type,but
otherwise identical with it inboth form and
venation.The
genus risonia contains over a dozen fossil species rangingfrom
theUpper
Cretaceous through the Tertiary, in the Northern Hemisphere. In theUnited
States there are three species in the Wilcox,one in the Claiborneand
threein theJackson
Eocene,and an
eighth in theAlum
Bluff fornuition (Miocene).None
of these are especially close to the present fossil.The
existing species are numerous, chiefly tropicaland
in theWestern
Hemisphere.The
genus isstill present in the floras ofboth
the Island llepublics.Occurrence.

drawing. It is so charac- teristicthat pieces of the leafone-half an inch square are readilyand
positively identified.The
present species, clearly distinctfrom
pre- viously described forms, represents a well de- fined type, appearing in the geological record at least asearlyas thelowerEocene
in south-eastern
North
America,and
continuingdown
tothe present, therebeing a largenumber
ofexisting species ofMespilodaphne in theAmerican
tropics.
The
existingform most
like the fossil is Mespilodaphne glauca of northernSouth
America,and
Ihave
introduced an auto- print ofaleafof thisspecies forcomparisonv»'ith thefossiland
alsotoshow
the areolation that issuchaclear-cutfeature inthe fossil form.Occurrence.

new
species presents all of the essential features of the genus ChrysopTiyllum,and
foreshadows the existing Chryso-•phyllum oliviforme
Lamarck,

is confinedto thetropicaland
subtropical regions ofthe world,ismostly American,and
hasbeen
presentinequatorialAmerica
since lower
Eocene
