Student housing questioned

When is an old building habitable?

Recent improvements to IUPUI’s Ball Residence have raised questione

concerning thè structure’s safety and cleanliness.

As a student residence, Ball seems little different from other student housing unite at other univergities.

While thè hall subscribes to a year-round pest control program, mouse droppings and dead roaches can stili be found in many of thè kitchenettes. Although provision is made for thè painting of rooms, posters and pictures frequently

disguise fallen plaster.

Records show that no fires have occurredln Ball Residence in many years. Nevertheless, séveral fire safety improvements have been made in recent

monfchs, including thè installation of a new alarm System.

As of spring recess, thè System had not yet been connected with thè campus operator, n e c e y ^ tin g a trip by Ball's hostess or g u a rd o thè location of thè alarm for verification. The hostess, however, believed that thè alarm System had been wired to thè campus operator for some time prior to spring recess. A potential hazard—even though exits from thè hall arg stili clearly marked and fire extinguishers stili checked regularly.

Perhaps thè hahitability of Bàli Residence could be guaranteed by thè improvement of Communications between thè university and its housing personnel, and between those personnel

* and Ball's tenants.

To thè editor:

I am writing in responsi to an article in "ObservaLions" for thè Aprii 8, 1981 issue of thè Sagdmore , in which it is alleged that thè Trustees approviti a two year journalism program on Ibis campus. /

The article is incorrect on two counts. The trustees did not approvo any journalism ‘•Pro

Ed psych class converges on Bradford Woods

by JoAnn Shanks

Members of Dr Nelson Goud's P253 Educational Psy chology for Secondary Teachers class emerged from Bradford Woods on Thursday. Aprii 9th wìth tired bodies but stimuiated minds. During a stay in thè woods of approximately four hours, thè eighteen partidpants leamed about trust, leadership, and co-opsration as they exer*

cixed their bodies on an obstacle courae wbioh is closely related to those of thè Outward Bound Program.

Warm-up for thè day’s adivi*

ties began at 9:30 a.m. with some qukk "getaquaintai" ex*

erdxes which induded a "trust fall." A "trust-fall" occurs when one person stenda about two feet away from his partner and then falla backward into his arma without breaking thè fall.

This. of course, meant that thè student falling had to trust his partner.

Trust played a major role in each part of thè day's activitiea, and after a one-third mile jog straight uphill. Dr. Goud's stu

dente explored trust skills fur- therby takinga "tru st walk."

On a trust walk a "leader ' guidea a "follower , whohaahia eyea doaed. through thè woods Neithar leader’ nor "follower", bowever, are allowed to speak.

As a result, both part nera must develop new styles of communi cation, and thè ‘follower” must learn to trust thè student

After thè trust walk studente confrontai a noi ber challenge in thè form of thè ominous "meat grinder," a wooden obstacle about 4 feet off thè ground and shaped like a plastic Chrìstmas ribbon spool. The task bere was

to get thè entire eighteen member group over thè spinning

"grinder” without touching ita sidee and within a ten minute time penod. Dr. Goud's group succeeded.

A thirteen foot wall was thè nasi probi* m of thè Educational Psycnology studente had to surmount. Here thè group scored success Before Dr Goud, uf mg a laddrr on ita back side, could reach thè top of thè wall his studente had their firat person on top. Within seventeen

Can you say that? Freddie? Bure, Bure.

by Bob Mowery

It a noon at Indianapolis radio 9tation WNAP dftd disc-jockey Freddie Fever tells bis radio audience he will see them lomorrow. then leaves during a song

Into thè lobby of theWIBC- WN AP building walks thè youngjock with wavy blonde hair, carrying his favorite hlack leather jacket. He has two cuts on his forehead, which he says are from slipping on his waterbed.

But Fast Freddie isn't just your typical d.j. The 1971 Indiana State graduate brings

" personali ties" on thè air with him that are unique. Among them are: Julia Cnilds, who gives Fred some unusual recipes: Johnny Clash. who tells of rough, country life with his wife June; and Fred's

"roommate" and friend, Mr.

Rogers

At a Pacer game with fellow WN A P disc-jockey Chris Connor, Freddie was asked about Mr. Rogers.

"Oh, he's just doing fine,"

Fever said. "He's down in French Lick now; he went snow skiing.

But there s no snow in Indiana now.

"Yeah, well. he said it was too cold anyway, so he ia akiing indoors in thè big hotel. Oh, and nezt week there s a rodeo coming to town. Mr. Rogers is entered in thè sheep wrestling contest."

Fever says thè ideas for his frìends carne by accident. He was eiperiemtning with

different voices one day when he realùed he sounded like Mr.

Rogers. He decided to use it on thè radio. Now he entertains his listems with various skits, most of which come from thè top of his head.

Isn't he afraid of using their voices on thè radio?

"Not rvally. Fever remarked.

" It sno big deal. People imitate others all tne time, like Rich Little.”

Fever didn't decide to go into broadcasting until he was in

college. He jokes that when he was a kid he wanted to be an arsonitst - he liked to play with matches.

Freddie started his radio career eight years ago in a amali station in his home town of Lafayette, Ind. However, he soon bacarne diacouraged.

"The station was really small, und sat out in thè middle of a big field," he remembered "you could actually see cows grazing righi outside thè window. And at night I even had to take out thè trash before I left."

Fred, then using thè radio name Steve K night, left radio for awhile but returned at Lafayette station WAZY. He recalìed thè 50,000 watt station as a good one. although in a small market.

So how did he find WNAP?

" While in Lafayette, I had an interview with WIFE in Indianapolis," Fever said.

"On thè way home I dropped off a tape at WNAP to Chris Connor, then thè station s program director, and la ter he

called me up."

Fever'■ friend, Connor, now devotes his time to thè morning team, along with Ron Belo, from 5:50 until 9 a m Fever was part of thè team, but now aire from ni ne until noon. He danna, being single, he wasn't used to going to bed so early like Connor and Bdo. who are marriad.

The 31-year-old d.j. ia satisfiad with his job at WNAP. where he has worksd for thè past three years. Hagets along well with thè othera at thè station, and sister station W1BC, which is in thè sa me building

Before leaving thè lobby, Fever petted a tali, bearded man on thè back and said “ Hey Orly." It was Orty Knutson, of WIBC He then walked over and hugged thè young blonde receptionist and chatted with her before leaving. He obviously enjoys thè atmoephere.

He usually goes outside where his Jaguar waits. But not today His doors were frozen shut from thè cold weather

"Shouldn t bave washed it

yeeterday, Fever said. "1 had to cali a tasi thia morning;. and was late for work. But Skip. s good ole' cab driver, said he'd get me to work (from Fsver'i northside apartment) in no time.

He was righi

In a write-in poli by thè Indianapolis News recently, Freddie was ranked as thè eighth most popolar disc jockey in Indy. compared to fifth last year

" Yes. well my family was out of town this year, so I didn't get as many votes," he quipped.

"You really can i go by thoee kind of polla where any one can stuff thè ballot box."

Like WFBQ backers did. with half thè top ten listed jocks

"They're just babysitter* of thè studio. How can any one sit

He then yells, "Hey, let'sdo up two hamburgers and a fry to go.'
