Storage Of
Cement
• Portland cement is a moisture-sensitive
material; if kept dry, it will retain its quality indefinitely.
• When stored in contact with damp air or moisture, Portland cement will set more
slowly and has less strength than Portland cement that is kept dry.
IMPORTANCE OF PROPER STORAGE OF CEMENT
• Its storage should be such that no
dampness or moisture is allowed to reach
cement.
EFFECTS OF STORAGE ON STRENGTH OF CEMENT
The strength of cement when used after one year of its production loses its strength by about
40-50%
on application as compared to that of freshly produced cement.Age of cement % Reduction in its strength

STORAGE OF CEMENT ON SITE
1. Store cement in a moist
proof storage area other wise quality of
cement will be affected.
Precautions While Stacking Cement at Site:
2. Cement should be
stacked in a shed/fumes, which is dry, leak proof and moisture proof.
3. Cement should be placed on dry brick floors, on
wooden crates or on the planks, about 15 cm above the ground level and SHOULD NOT be stored on the earth.
4. The stack should not be higher than 10 bags to avoid lumps under pressure.
Cement from different
manufacturers
should be stacked separately.
5. The cement should be used on first come first used basis.
6. The stack must be kept fully covered with tarpaulin or polythene sheet and protected against atmospheric moisture.
7. The cement bags should be kept close together to reduce air circulation.
2. During monsoon season the cement should be carried
under covered Polythene or
‘Tarpaulin’.
3. Care should be taken that the labour should not tear the bags while
loading and unloading the cement bags.
Precautions While Transporting Cement Bags
1. Care should be taken to carry the bags in a clean vehicle which is not dustier or on earth etc.
It will reduce the strength of the cement.
1. Storage of bulk cement should be in a watertight bin or silo.
2. Storage silos:
• After the grinding process, cement is pumped into the storage silos.
• This silo is preventing the moisture to react with cement.
• When needed cement from the silos is packed into bags or loaded into road tankers and rail wagons for despatch.
3. Transportation should be in vehicles with watertight, properly sealed lids.
4. Cement stored for long periods of time should be tested for strength and loss on ignition.

1. Do not store in a building where walls, roof and floor are not completely weather proof.
2. Do not store in a new warehouse until the interior is thoroughly dried out.
3. Do not make contact with a badly fitted windows and doors and see that they are kept closed.
4. Do not stack against the wall. Always pile on the floor on wooden planks.
5. Do not forget to pile bags together.
6. Do not pile more than 10 - 15 bags high.
7. Do not keep bags on the grounds for temporary storage at work site. Pile on raised dry platform and cover with
tarpauline or Polythene sheets.
