THE TYPE OF THE GENUS COM ASTER.
The
genus Comasterwas
establisliedby
Professor Agassiz in 1836 to contain thecomatnhds
inwhich the rays dividemore
than once.He
cites as the type Comatula multiradiata
Lamarck. The
specificname
multiradiata
was
firstusedby
Linnaeus in 1758, the typespecimen beingstillextantatLund.
Lamarck
includesunder hisComatulamultiradiata asaquestiona1)lesynonym
the Asterias multiradiataofLinnipus. Ihave previously considered the multiradiata ofLamarck
to be asynonym
of the multiradiataofLinnaeusbecauseofthis,and
becauseoneofLamarck's
specimensisidenticalwith the Linnaean type.But
the casecan not be disposed of so easily. In 1832 Goldfuss describedand
figured another multiradiata basedupon
a specimen atBonn.
Miiller, in revising the group, decided that thename
multiradiatamust
holdforthespecieswhich had
been adequately described—thatofGoldfuss—and
heredescribedtheLamarckian
Comatulamultiradiataunderthename
Alecto multifidafrom observationsmade by
Troschelon
Lamarck's specimens. This action fixesthe identityof theComattda
multiradiata ofLamarck,
and, there- fore, of the typeofComaster. Alecto multifidaisasomewhat anomalous
species, congeneric with,though notclosely relatedto,Plianogenia typica ofLoven. Comaster must,therefore,supplant Phanogenia. This leaves the genus
which
I have previouslycalled Comaster withoutaname.
Itmay
becalledCapillaster, thetypetobeActinometrasentosa P.H.

on boardthe Albatrossamong
the Philippine Islands,Dr. Paul Bartsch captured asmall specimen of Iridometranana
which liad been attractedto,and was swimming
about, asubmerged
electriclight. Sofaras I
know
thisisthefirstrecordof positivephototaxisamong
thecrinoids.Itshould be
remembered
that thespecimenisonlyabout half the adult size,as it is possible,and
even probable, that the reactionsof the adult of this speciesare quitedifierent.—
