THE VIEW OF THE EAST IN WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT Just say a short description of the story you can think of to find a memenuhi-salah that you can use to taste Sarjana Sastra Inggris. This research aims to identify and explain the orientalist issue in the film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, such as how the Orient is stereotyped in the Western perspective and what racism appears from the West to the East. The result of the analysis is then to portray the East as barbaric, uncivilized, conservative, patriarchal and irrational people.

The researcher also notes that the distorted image of the West is seen as demeaning to the East. The film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) tells the story of Kim Barker who is sent to Afghanistan to become a war correspondent during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Whiskey Tango Foxtrot film was written by Robert Carlock and directed by Glen Ficarra and John Requa.

As Hamadi said since European colonialism, the dominant relationship between West and East affected many regions around the world. As the relationship between the West and the East is highlighted in this film, there is also a focus that the West and the East are shown differently through the story itself. Although sometimes the West is shown as the bad guys, they are still portrayed as heroes, but the East is only shown as the bad guys.

From the explanation above, it can be seen that the East is apparently different from the West. In this research, the researcher will find out how the East is depicted, including the racism and stereotype that appears in this film, whether it is negative or positive, and whether it is about culture or about religion by using Orientalism theory. Based on the background of the study explained in this research, the researcher discusses the following questions.

This research aims to identify how the East is represented in the film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. This research aims to explain why the East is represented in such a way in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. By analyzing this film, the researcher expects to gain a deeper understanding about the Eastern issues and to provide a reference to other researchers.

In this thesis he analyzes four war films and one of them is Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. The differences between this research and the previous research above is that this study applies the theory of Orientalism and focuses more on the depictions of the East. Then, this research only focuses on one object, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot film, while the previous research focuses on many objects.

Mainly, the issue of how the West sees the East is considerably viscous, so the researcher sees the Orientalism approach as suitable for the issue.

Orientalism Theory

One aspect of the electronic, postmodern world is that there has been a reinforcement of the stereotypes by which the East is viewed. Racism is therefore a form of representation which, by indicating discrete human collectivities, necessarily functions as an ideology of inclusion and exclusion: for example, the meaning of skin color both includes and excludes in the categorization. Furthermore, it is the negative characteristics of the Other that reflect the positive characteristics of the Self (Roediger, 1994).

As stated by Abram, et al (2011), a visual content of the film is an important part that produces a certain meaning and becomes a great measure about how story is told. According to Sikov (2010), all the elements placed in front of the camera to be photographed are called mise-en-scene. The elements placed in the film give some meanings to the reader such as in lighting.

The setting also helps the audience discover the meaning implemented by the film. Also, the costume can show the social class, lifestyle and identity of the character in the film. Camera angle marks the specific location where the film camera or video camera is placed to take a shot.

First, when the camera is placed at the eye level of an adult, it is called Second, it is called a low angle shot when the object is shot from a lower position. A close-up is a shot that isolates an object in the image, making it appear large, and a long shot is taken from a long distance.

A high camera angle can be used to give a general overview of the situation while a low camera angle is needed to show the position of character in relation to something else. High and low camera angles are used to represent the strength of relationships between the characters and also to show the character becoming the subordinate or the dominant." (Turner G, 1999:60). The meaning of empirical is that the type of inquiry is grounded in the world of experience.

Second, the researcher must find out the relationship between the data and interpret what this film wants to represent. The researcher will analyze the data by viewing the mise-en-scene and explaining each frame of the film. The next step in analyzing the data is to interpret them based on Orientalism and film theory to find the meaning of the issue.

Conclusion

In addition, the mysterious appearance is also the stereotype that strongly attaches to Afghan women. The stereotype and racism portrayed in the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot movie appears to make the culture of the West and the East look different. The differences in skin color, religion and the portrayal of the ethnic group that lead to the stereotypes are very evident in this film.

From the analysis, most of the scenes in this film depict the negative side of the East, while the West is positive. It can be concluded that the racism and stereotypes displayed in this film go hand in hand to provide negative depictions of the East. The researcher concludes that this film is a piece of media that represents Islam by giving a representation of Afghans and Muslims in the popular media to show that the West is more dominant so that they can persecute the East in those ways.
