ABSTRACT

PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS' CHALLENGES IN TEACHING EFL STUDENTS THROUGH MOODLE

Since Covid-19 attacked many aspects of life, and education was one of them.

Schools and universities have been closed in several countries regarding Covid-19 because of the government policies to prevent the transmission of the corona virus.

However, learning in schools must be carried out in order to meet student needs.

As a result, School From Home as an alternative in this pandemic by used an educational platform such a Moodle. While school from home with using Moodle, this situation gave the difficulties to every subject, especially English which it’s valuable subject in the school. Teaching English through online or Moodle, it made some difficulties that faced by pre-service teachers during teaching English.

As a result from stated above, this research conducted a research with use qualitative approach. The purposes of this research were:(1). To investigated pre- service teachers' challenges in teaching EFL students through Moodle and (2).

Analyzed pre-service teachers' strategies in teaching EFL students using Moodle.

Then, the instruments that was used were questionnaire and interview. The researcher took the data from 20 pre-service teachers from four universities in Bandar Lampung that they already done Teaching Practicum Program around two until three month.

The research result showed that there were ten challenges faced by pre-service teachers in teaching EFL students through Moodle. The challenges were pre-service teachers using and operating Moodle, uploading material on Moodle, students’

ability in operating the Moodle, difficulty in designing the lesson plan, difficulty explaining the material through Moodle, the students’ feeling, the students’

understanding, parental guidance, students’ smartphone ownership, internet connection and data balance during online learning process. Then, in overcoming teaching challenges and difficulties, the strategies were extending the time, opening discussion in the forum to review learning materials, making sure that students can use Moodle and understand the materials, and always building good communication during online teaching and learning class. As a conclusion, this research had at least there were ten challenges and four main strategies faced by pre-service teachers. Then, hopefully this research can be used as a reference for the teachers in using teaching tools or platform in teaching English as a foreign language and it is hoped that the students will be more familiar with learning with technology to make them autonomous learners and elevate their learning process.

Lastly, this research is hoped to be one of the resources for the following researchers who want to conduct the research.
