The final of the NationalFFA Prepared Public Speaking Contest took place in a packed arena on Friday evening between the agricultural skills awards presentations. Four regional finalists competed for first place in prepared communications. The key to this efficiency? The best cared for livestock and poultry in the world. Thanks to billions of dollars spent on private and government research into raising quality livestock, we have now improved housing facilities, management practices and healthy, nutritious feed. In the ever-changing world of animal agriculture, livestock producers have two primary concerns. Firstly, their concern for providing the highest quality, safest food in the world and secondly, their concern for the welfare of the animals.

34;One of the best strongholds of animal welfare in our culture is the farmer. Due to an increasingly urban society, our contact with farm animals is limited." This limitation leads to a lack of understanding about the real needs and role of domestic farm animals. It is sometimes emotional, distorted and designed to convince the public that livestock producers No longer treat their animals as animals, but as “food machines.” These “animal rights.” 34; Steve Kopperud, spokesman for the Farm Animal Welfare Coalition, which is a national organization that represents livestock producers and agribusinesses in the animal rights issue, has said: 'It was a very clear unaffected judgment which is once a great judgment about a ceased to make a great judgement. something of which they had practical knowledge and understanding—animal man practices.'".

34;On January 29, 1989, flames tore through the Dixon Livestock Auction in Dixon, California." The fire destroyed primarily the sheep and livestock of what was one of the largest livestock auctions in California." Now that the animal rights issue has caught the public's attention, don't expect it to disappear. The 400 animal rights groups in this country have a base of S200 million and the radical end of the movement has already vandalized numerous livestock facilities in recent years. The truth is that animals are generally kept in other sanitary production units to protect the health and welfare of the animal. Housing protects animals from predators, disease and bad weather or extreme climate. Housing also makes breeding and birth less stressful, protects young animals and makes it easier for the farmers to care for the animals.

Another misconception is that the average farmed animal in the US is fed whatever the farmer has available, regardless of what the animal needs for good health. The American farmer has weathered the struggles of the past years and is now facing one of the most exciting times in the history of agriculture. Yes, if it is true that our society has once again called upon the American farmer to meet the demands and needs of the consumer. And yes, if I feel that the American agricultural producer is ready for this challenge. truly embarking on a new—an era of science and technology that will change American industries forever. During a special session held on Thursday at 12:30 p.m., finalists in the FFA Public Speaking Contest prepared and presented six- to eight-minute speeches to a panel of judges. FFA members only had 30 minutes to gather their comments. After completing their speeches, the finalists asked the judges questions.

Wednesday's afternoon business session included discussion of three proposed changes to the FFA National Constitution and Bylaws. Changes are marked in bold. Article XII, Section B."At the National Convention, each State Association shall be entitled to two official delegates from its active membership, who shall be designated as State Delegation President and Vice President, plus one additional delegate for every 1,000 active members. Delegates shall be selected by the State FFA Association. A quorum exists if both of the following conditions are met at the time of business: the majority of those present are official delegates registered at the national convention, and the official delegates represent 26 national associations.

Article VII, delete section A. Strike out the balance of the sections in the article and amend article VI, section E, by striking out the fifth paragraph and inserting a new paragraph as follows: "They have at least earned and invested productively. The delegates adopted an amendment providing participants in international provides the same waiver to FFA programs as the constitution provides to FFA members who serve in the armed forces. The amendment extends participants an additional year of eligibility to apply for awards and diplomas or to run for state or national office. Article V, Section B.".. Member, who was in good standing at the time of induction into the United States Armed Forces or into the International FFA program must be in good standing during that period without further payment or attendance at meetings. Time spent in the armed forces or the FFA international program does not count as elapsed time in determining the maximum four convention period after high school graduation or high school graduation. Members who take advantage of this waiver of time in order to maintain active membership to apply for higher levels must resume active participation within six months of being honorably discharged from military service or completing their FFA International program, indicating their desire by by paying membership fees and attending meetings. members participating in the Six Month Armed Services Program or participating in the International FFA National Six Month Program are eligible for one full year of extended membership.

3. The National FFA Organization is developing a videotape explaining all aspects of agricultural education, the supervised agricultural experience, and the FFA for use by government officials to help them develop membership in their states. We have analyzed the program of the National FFA Organization. We believe that our primary concern should be external public relations at the individual, local and state levels. The various suggestions are aimed at promoting the opportunities that the FFA offers everyone. 3. We recommend that the National Information Service issue a challenge every month to local departments and state associations to implement new promotional projects, such as adopting a highway and billboards on state highways and expressways.

Conference of State Presidents, Washington Conference Program and National Leadership Conference for State Officials. This should be done to educate state officials, chapter leaders, agricultural educators, and state staff about FFAA alumni, its programs, and what local FFA chapters have to offer. 4. We suggest that a display of all country forms be posted on the wall, equipped with markers to allow people from individual countries to sign their names as they pass through the career display. We hope that every association in the state will take this display back home as a souvenir of the National FFA Convention. The committee also thanks the following people for participating in the four conventions. To our entertainers and speakers including TerryBradshaw, William Bennett, Clayton Yeutter, Miss America Debbye Turner, NicholasBabson, Thomas Hennesy, Sam Brownback, TyBoyd, Robert Swan, BillSanders, Mamie McCullough, Charles Duke and the Bellamy brothers. we.

Richard Berkley, Mayor of KansasCity, Mo.; Joe Stein- cger, Mayor of KansasCity, Kan.; theAmericanRoyal; the media and the sponsors of the National FFAF Foundation. We commend all the committee members who worked so hard to compile reports for this convention. We owe special thanks to those who served on the nominating committee for many extra hours this week. We also realize that there would be no nominating committee without the 35 major candidates for national office?—us. 8. Consider other dates and sites if holding matches in Kansas City during the national convention is not feasible. Should such a situation arise, it was recommended that contest winners be recognized at the national FFA convention.

7. Graduating seniors are not allowed to attend the WCP unless they are newly elected state officials. If a student is a state employee and has not attended WCP, he or she should be able to attend WCP regardless of age or year in school. We commend the national officers and staff for the extensive preparation and careful consideration that went into holding two outstanding leadership training conferences: the National Leadership Conference for State Officers (NLCSO) and the Conference of State Presidents (SPC). Our thoughts and suggestions follow below. 3. The need for every officer to be fully effective in the context of conferences creates a desire for a variety of teaching materials and styles. The following changes would be most helpful in training officers to handle chapter visits due to the increased contact state officers have with chapters: better explanations of media handling, state part-time, member development, and awareness of national issues in the field of agriculture and FFA.

Conference of State Presidents 1. Due to excessive scheduling and consideration for official business, we advise scheduling events. The program should include a full tour day at the beginning of the week, including social activity recognition. The remainder of the week should include a business visit to shops and official business, on official business and on official business. better balance between business and social activities. My friends, it is time for someone new to come forward with their vision and help this great organization. I know you will show them the kindness, sincerity and love you have shown so much. Keep the vision my friends, keep it.
