Education, as the foundation of a nation, needs to be improved on an on-going basis. Various steps have been taken to achieve a better quality of education that can align with developed countries around the world. Improving the

process of education, research development, expansion of community service, the improvement of scienti c activities, including scienti c conferences, are the efforts to improve the quality of education.

This 5th International Conference on Education and Technology (ICET 2019) is one step in disseminating knowledge that is set at a scienti c meeting in the eld of education. The conference provides a channel for educational researchers and practitioners to share knowledge in order to improve the quality of education. In 2019, this conference is part of the main activity program of FIP JIP (Forum of Faculty of Education and Department of Education) 2019 that organized by Faculty of Education Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) in collaboration with faculty of education from 12 state

universities producing educational staff in Indonesia. Faculty of Education UM feels honored to be a host of this prestigious conference.

The theme of the conference is “Reorientation of Education in the Era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 in Nation Development”, with featured keynote speakers from various countries including USA, Finland, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The purpose of this conference is to share our ideas and

strategies to improve education system in era of industrial revolution 4.0. The conference also facilitates the lecturers principals supervisors teachers

conference also facilitates the lecturers, principals, supervisors, teachers, students, or all who have attention to education to express and share their ideas through writing and presenting articles of the conference about how to improve the quality of education in the era of technology development.

On behalf of the faculty of Education UM, we thank you for the cooperation that has been given at this conference. In addition, we appreciate all the audience and participants, specially the deans, vice deans, head of

departments, secretary of departments, head of study programs, the keynote speakers, the chairman of the event, the committee and the crews, the

reviewers, and all the rest that I cannot mention one by one who highly participated in the conference.

Hopefully, this conference is useful for all, especially to solve the problems and develop the education system in line with the development of technology in industry revolution of 4.0. In addition, we hope this conference can

contribute to improving the quality of education in particular and global.

Indexing Databases

Atlantis Press has af liations with the following indexing databases:

Web of Science

Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science is an online subscription- based citation indexing service which gives access to

multiple databases that reference cross-disciplinary research and which allows for comprehensive citation search and in- depth exploration of specialized sub- elds within a scienti c discipline. It consists of 6 core databases, a number of

specialist collections, as well as regional databases and

currently contains more than 160 million records and over 1.7 billion cited references. A select number of Atlantis Press journals and proceedings is indexed in Web of Science

databases such as the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and the

Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI).

Scopus

Elsevier's Scopus is the world's largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed scienti c journals, books and

conference proceedings which covers research topics across all scienti c, technical and medical disciplines. The database currently contains more than 75 million records and over 1.4 billion cited references, while it also offers various smart tools and metrics to track, analyze and visualize research. At

present a select number of Atlantis Press journals and proceedings is indexed in Scopus and a number of applications are in progress.

MEDLINE

MEDLINE is the U.S. National Library of Medicine premier bibliographic database that contains more than 25 million references to journal articles in life sciences with a

concentration on biomedicine. The subject scope of MEDLINE is biomedicine and health, broadly de ned to encompass those areas of the life sciences, behavioral sciences, chemical sciences and bioengineering needed by health professionals and others engaged in basic research and clinical care, public health, health policy development or related educational

activities. MEDLINE also covers life sciences vital to biomedical practitioners, researchers and educators,

including aspects of biology, environmental science, marine biology, plant and animal science as well as biophysics and chemistry. A select number of Atlantis Press journals in health and medical sciences is indexed in MEDLINE.

PubMed Central (PMC)

PubMed Central (PMC) is a free full-text digital archive of

biomedical and life sciences journal literature which has been developed and operated by the National Center for Biotechno- logy Information (NCBI), a division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). As of today, PMC contains more than 5.9 million full-

(NIH). As of today, PMC contains more than 5.9 million full text articles spanning several centuries of biomedical and life science research (late 1700s to present). Participation by

publishers in PMC is voluntary, although participating

journals must meet certain scienti c and technical standards and content must be deposited as per the NIH Public Access Policy. A select number of Atlantis Press journals in health and medical sciences is indexed in PMC.

Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a

community-curated online directory of open access journals which aims to be the starting point of all information

searches for quality, peer-reviewed, open access material.

DOAJ's mission is to increase the visibility, accessibility, reputation, usage and impact of quality, peer-reviewed, open access scholarly research journals globally, regardless of discipline, geography or language. At present, the directory contains more than 14,000 open access journals from 133 countries and more than 4.6 million open access articles covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, social science and humanities. All Atlantis Press journals are indexed in DOAJ.

Ei Compendex

Elsevier's Ei Compendex (Engineering Index - COMPuterized ENgineering inDEX) on Engineering Village is the broadest and most complete engineering literature database in the world. It provides a holistic and global view of peer-reviewed and indexed publications with over 20 million records from 77 countries across 190 engineering disciplines. A select number of Atlantis Press journals (i.e. within relevant subject areas) is indexed in Ei Compendex.

PubMed

PubMed is a free search engine which provides access to references and abstracts from biomedical and life sciences literature and which has been developed and maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). PubMed comprises more than 30 million citations and abstracts, primarily from MEDLINE but also from PubMed Central (PMC) and other life science journals and books, covering the elds of biomedicine and health and portions of the life sciences, behavioral

sciences, chemical sciences and bioengineering. Many

PubMed records also contain links to full-text articles, some of which are freely available (often in PMC). A select number of Atlantis Press journals in health and medical sciences is indexed in PubMed.

Portico

Portico is a community-supported digital preservation archive that safeguards permanent access to e-journals, e- books and digital collections for researchers, scholars and students. The Portico digital preservation service is part of ITHAKA, a not-for-pro t organization which aims to "help the academic community use digital technologies to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways". The Portico archive currently contains more than 88 million journal articles, more than 1 million books and more than 4 million other digital collection items from a total number of 663 participating publishers. To

comply with NLM requirements (for indexation in MEDLINE and PMC) a select number of Atlantis Press journals is

preserved in the Portico archive

China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI)

The China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) is a key national information construction project launched by

Tsinghua University and supported by the PRC Ministry of Education, PRC Ministry of Science and Technology, PRC Ministry of Propaganda and the PRC General Administration of Press and Publication. It is dedicated to the mass

digitization of China knowledge resources as well as creating the platform for global dissemination and value-added

services (CNKI was designated as the second agent of DOIs in mainland China by the International DOI Foundation in 2013).

It comprises the China Integrated Knowledge Resources Database which contains over 90% of China knowledge

resources. Most of the Atlantis Press proceedings and journals content is indexed in CNKI.

Wanfang Data

Wanfang Data is an af liate of the Chinese Ministry of

Science & Technology which provides access to a wide range of database resources serving as a gateway to Chinese culture, medicine, business, science, engineering, etc. The Wanfang Data electronic resources comprise more than 43 million journal articles, close to 5 million dissertations and theses, more than 4 million conference papers and a broad collection of Chinese statistical data, patents, etc. Most of the Atlantis Press proceedings and journals content is indexed in

Wanfang.

dblp computer science bibliography

The dblp computer science bibliography is an online reference for biblio-graphic information on major computer science publications. Starting at the University of Trier in 1993 and owned by the Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik since 2018, it evolved from a small experimental web server into a popular open-data service for the computer science community. The dblp mission is to support computer science researchers by providing free access to high-quality bibliographic metadata and links to electronic editions of publications. The dblp currently indexes more than 5.1 million publications, published by over 2.5 million authors. All Atlantis Press journals in elds related to computer science are indexed in the dblp.

Ulrichsweb

ProQuest's Ulrichsweb is the standard online library directory and database for journals, magazines, newspapers and other periodicals. As such, it is regarded as the global authority for serials knowledge and analysis which comprises more than 383,000 serials from over 90,000 publishers covering 977 subject areas and 200 different languages. Records include searchable TOCs, ISSN, title, publisher, online availability, subject area, language, list prices and more. All Atlantis Press serial publications are indexed in Ulrichsweb.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a freely accessible web search engine that indexes the full text or metadata of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines. The Google Scholar index includes most peer-reviewed online academic journals and books, conference papers, theses and

dissertations, preprints, abstracts, technical reports, and other

dissertations, preprints, abstracts, technical reports, and other scholarly literature, including court opinions and patents. It is estimated to contain more than 160 million documents and continues to cover approximately 90% of all articles published in English. All content published on the Atlantis Press

platform is indexed in Google Scholar.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the direct effect of prior knowledge on students’

learning outcomes in subject of basic science concepts in the Primary

Education Department of the Faculty of Education, Gorontalo State University.

This study used a survey method, and the techniques of data collection were questionnaires and learning outcomes tests. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential with a path analysis approach (path analysis). The

population were 202 undergraduate students of Department of Primary

Education, State University of Gorontal, who participated in the basic science concept subject and, 130 students were the sample of this study. The results of the study found that prior knowledge had a positive effect on Science

learning outcomes, namely there was a positive direct effect of prior knowledge on students’ learning outcomes in the basic science concept subjects. Prior knowledge could be strengthened by improving lecture activities through connecting students' knowledge and past experiences before taking their lectures and that will lead to a science learning

experience. Prior knowledge can process learning to enhance better learning outcomes in the topic of living things, not only plants and animals, but also humans. This shows that sound prior knowledge will be able to improve the learning outcomes of primary education students in subject of the basic science concept.

The Effect of Prior Knowledge on Students’

Learning Outcomes on the Subject of Basic Science Concepts

I. INTRODUCTION

Cooperation and supports from higher education institution, in this case, the Department of Elementary School Education (throughout this paper will be referred to as PGSD) are needed in producing qualified elementary school teachers. To achieve this objective the PGSD department of Faculty of Education of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo has started to improve its teaching and learning process. Learning output is the most important thing in learning. Susanto (2013) defined learning output as changes on students, either in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects as a result of learning activity. In addition, Gagne (Jufri, 2013) defined learning output as observable performance in a person that can be called as capability. According to Gagne, there are five categories of capabilities in human being, namely: (1) intellectual skill, (2) cognitive strategy, (3) verbal information, (4) motoric skills, and (5) attitude.

Students learning output are abilities such as cognitive, affective, and psychomotor capabilities that they obtained following the learning experience. Learning output can be detected through a series of evaluation aimed at gathering information in the form of data to prove students’ ability in attaining the learning objectives.

The learning output achieved by students is the result of interaction between students and other learning components.

The reality, especially in the basic concept of Natural Science (throughout this paper will be referred to as IPA) subject, is that students find it very difficult to apply the IPA concept into theories and practices. Based on the observation result, several problems regarding the IPA learning at students of PGSD were found. These problems have consequences such as low learning output.

This low learning output was due to the characteristics of

the PGSD students who came from various educational background such as from General High School and Vocational high schools with various department, habits, and attitude, lack of laboratory facilities, no internet connection, and lack of library facilities and lack of new books collection, as well as lack of lecturers’ services for students due to their high level of activities outside the university.

II. METHOD

This study was implemented in the department of Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) of the Education Faculty of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. The samples in this study were students of the second year with the total population of 202 students and the 130 students as sample selected using the sampling process.

This study was carried out in the form of survey. The variable in this study was independent variable (exogenous) and dependent variable (endogenous). The exogenous variable was prior knowledge(X), whereas endogenous variable was Students’ Learning Output (Y).

The data analysis was descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The descriptive analysis was carried out by presenting the data through table of frequency, histogram, average, and standard deviation. Meanwhile, inferential analysis was carried out to test the hypothesis.

The hypothesis analysis was carried out through regression and correlational analysis. Before the hypothesis was tested the data normality was tested using Liliefors. The pathway statistical analysis was administered for hypothesis testing.

III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The description of the data presented below are the learning output data (Y) as endogenous variable, and prior 5th International Conference on Education and Technology (ICET 2019)

knowledge (Y). Based on the data (Table 1), it was obtained that the mean of the data was 44.18; the data median was 40.83; and modus was 34. The frequency distribution was put into the frequency table, and 9 classes were obtained with the minimum score of 20 and the maximum score of 84; thus the largest score range was 64; the detailed result is presented in Table 2.

Table 1 shows that the frequency distribution of the learning output variable was a positive curve. This indicates that the average values were larger, and the median was also larger than modus. Further, it could be seen that 13 respondents or 10% were within the average group, 41 respondents (70.78 %) were above the average group, and 76 respondents (19.22%) were belowaverage group. Distribution of learning output variable is presented in the histogram below (Figure 1).

Based on the result, it was obtained that the prior knowledge: the mean value was 77.47; with the median was 79.5; and modus was 81.5. Distribution of frequency was made into seven classes with the minimum score of 48 and the maximum score of 100; thus, the score range was 52, and the result is presented in Table 3 below.

Table 3 shows that the frequency distribution of students’ prior knowledgescore was a negative curve.

This shows that there were a relatively smaller average score and smaller median than modus. Further, it shows that there were 35 respondents (26.92%) were within the average group; 61 respondents (23.07%) were above the average categories, and 34 respondents (49.99%) were below the average group. Score distribution of learning output variable was presented in histogram of Figure 2 below.

The regression formula for students’ learning output and prior knowledge on X1 was Ŷ = a + bx or Ŷ = -18.90 + 0.793X. This formula produced the Fcount = 69.35 and the significance level of α = 0.005; it was obtained that the Ftable = 3.91; thus Ftable= 69.35 > Ftable=3.91; Thus, the linear regression formula was highly significant (Table 4).

This means that each increase of prior knowledgescore of the students would influence the students’ learning output by 0.793 in the constant of -18.90.

Based on the regression equation, it was obtained that Ŷ = -18.903 + 0.793X1. Clearly, that each increase of prior knowledgescore would be followed by the increase of students’ learning outcome in the subject of Basics Concept of IPA 2 or the more effective the prior knowledgeimplementation, the better the increase of students’ learning outcome IPA 2 subject.The influence of prior knowledgeon students’ learning outcome in Basic Concept of IPA 2 subject was supported by the pathway coefficient of 0.152, where the tcount = 2.10 > ttable = 1.645 in the significance level of α = 0.05; thus, the H0 was rejected, and H1 was accepted, which means that the pathway coefficient between prior knowledgeand students’ learning output in Basic Concept of IPA 2 was significant. This shows that there was a direct positive influence on students’ learning output in Basic Concept of IPA 2 subject.
