GUATEMALA, AND HISPANIOLA.

paper have been found among

collections recently

the National Herbarium

or in older

hitherto

examined.

Erigeron ortegae Blake,sp.nov.

Herbaceous, 30 cm. high

and

probably

much more

(thelower partnot seen), essentially glabrous throughout; stem branching, striate-angled, pale green, whitish-dotted;stemleavesalternate, 1.5 to 3cm.apart, ellip- tic-linearto linear-oblanceolate orlinear-lanceolate,3to 4.8cm.long, 5 to 8

mm.

wide, acute, sessile or graduallynarrowed intoashort petioliform base,obscurely repand, ratherfirm,dullgreenon bothsides,very narrowly pale-margined

and when young somewhat

Erigeron ortegaeisnotclosely relatedto

any

other specieswith whichI

am

acquainted. It is

somewhat

similar in appearance to the smoother formsofErigeron bonariensisL.,but verydifferent inthe charactersofthe involucre

and

rays.

The

plant is

more

or less intermediatein character betweenAster

and

Erigeron, butis referredtoErigeronon thebasis ofits short bluntstyletips.

is further distinguished

by

itsphyUaries,whicharebroaderthanin

any

other species

and

do not have the attenuate or very narrowly acuminate tips foundin practicallyalltheothers. Itisnearest to theepappose formofH.

cordatum (Hook.

Arn.) Blake.

The

conspicuously superaxillary branches from which the

name

is derived are

shown by

allthe sixoreightspecimensofthe type collection examined,

and by

noothersinalarge series ofspecimensrepresentingthe other speciesofthe genus.

much

longerthantheblades,

and

withthe diskcorollasmerelyglandularon

theteeth.

Shrub

orsmalltree,leafy,the leavescloselycrowded onthe shortlateral branches;

numerous Cuban and Bahaman

species, allof which, aswell asthespecies ofHispaniola, have beenlisted

and

keyed

by
