KEHABILITATION OF A HITHERTO OVERLOOKED
SPECIES OF MUSK TURTLE OF THE SOUTHERN STATES.

When
Holbrook, in 1842, published his splendid five-volume edi- tion ofNorth American
Herpetology with colored plates of all the species, heknew
only one species ofmusk
turtle, namely, the one Latreille in 1802had
given thename
of Testudo odorataon
account of itsmusky
odorand which Holbrook
figuredand
described as Sternothaerus odoratus. In 1856, however, J. E. Gray, in his Cata- logue of Shield Reptiles in the BritishMuseum, named
thesame
genus AromocJielys, also with reference to the odor, adding at thesame
time anew
species, A. carinatus, basedon
specimensfrom
Louisiana. Louis Agassiz, at this very period,was
writing hisfamous
Contributions to the Natural History of the United States, but itwas
not until the firstvolume which
contains the system- atic treatment of theNorth American
turtleswas
passing tlirough the press that he received Gray's work,and
found that his conclu- sions tosome
extenthad
been anticipated. Inan
appendix to the secondvolume
(1857) he thereforesynonymized Ms
genera Gonio- chelysand
Ozotheca (again a reference to the "Stinkpot,"' oneof the favorite popularnames
of themusk
turtle) with AromocJielys,and
his
new
speciesGoniochclystriquetra,from Lake
Concordia, Louisiana, with A. carinatus.But
in addition he describedtwo new
species Goniochclys minorand
Ozotheca tristycha, which, however,have
not been generally acceptedby
herpetologists.Thus
Cope,in 1875,and
True, in 1883, completely ignored them. Boulenger,who
did not recognize themusk
turtles as aseparate genus, but placedthem
in thegenus Kinosternon, in his Catalogue of Chelonians in the BritishMuseum
(1883) placed 0. tristycha in thesynonymy
of Kinosternon odoraturn,and
G.minor
inthat of K. carinatum, the latter, however, with a query. In this hewas
followedby
Siebenrock, in hismono-
graph of the family, 1907.The same
dispositionwas made
of these species in Stejnegerand

thatyear three full-grown specimensof amusk
turtle were donated to the United States NationalMuseum by
Dr. O. P.Hay, who had
collectedthem many
years before near Vicksburg, Missis- sippi. Itwas
recognized,though
too late to be incorporated in theCheck
List, that they belonged to a species ofwhich
the NationalMuseum
then did not possessany
specimens. Closer examinationproved them
to be true Sternotheriis carinatus,and made
it clear tliat all the other specimens sonamed, which we had from
Georgiaand
Florida,were
specifically different.Having now,
through the courtesy of Dr.Thomas
Barbour,been
able tocompare
our material with Agassiz's cotypes in theMuseum
ofComparative
Zoology, it isevident that the Georgia-Florida specimens are identical with his Gonioclielys
minor and
represent a very distinct specieswhich
shouldnow
beknown
asSternotherusminor
(Agassiz).The
essential differencesbetween
S.carinatusand
S.minor
are: 1,the flat keelless sides of S. carinatus,
which form
a nearly straight slopefrom
the sharp central keel to the marginals, while in S.minor
this slope is
much more
arched, the convexity being usuallyempha-
sized
by
a sharp lateral keel on each side;and
2, the absence, or rarely vestigial presence, of a gular in S. carinatus, while inS*.minor
it is always distinct.
An
examination of the published records of the specimens attrib- uted to S. carinatus resulted in the discovery that nearly all belong to S.minor
or to the supposed southernform
of S. odoratusknown
as tristychus,
and
thatS.minor
occurs principallyinGeorgia,Alabama, and
part of Florida.The
reported occurence of S. carinatus in the eastern part of Tennessee^was
therefore of particularinterest, and, thanks to the courtesy of Dr.Henry
Fowler, of the PhilactelphiaAcademy Museum,
Ihave had
the opportunity ofexamining
the specimen collectedby
Mr.Rhoads
intheEmory
River atHarriman, Roane
County, Tennessee, a secondary affluent of the Tennessee River. It is unquestionably ayoung

with three-keeled carapaceand
gular.From
Mr. Rhoads's descriptionofthespecimen as having"two
blackbands
passback from
theeye acrossand above tympanum and
joinon
foreneck" it hasbeen surmisedthat the spec-imen might
rather belong to true S. odoratus, a stripedhead
pattern being characteristic of the latter.But
the irregularly curvingdusky
lines exhibited
by
Rhoads's specimen are entirely differentfrom
the darktransocular band, borderedabove and below by
anarrow
well- defined yellow line, of S. odoratus. In fact, it is the yellow lines of the latter, not thedark lines,which
are characteristic of theyoung
S. odoratus,
and
of these there isno
trace in theEmory
River speci-men.

the upper Tennessee Riverwhen
it does not occur in the lowerreaches of that river nor else-where in the Mississippi River drainage?
Two
articles in Science (vol. 12,new
series, July 27, 1900) afford a very satisfactoryanswer
to this question.
The
first one,^by
Ha3'esand
Campbell, gives a condensed account of theirdemonstration, based on purely physio- graphic evidence, that the Tennessee Riversome
time inlateMiocene was
capturedby
the Mississippi drainage,and
that before that time theupper
Tennessee River flowed into theAlabama
Riversystem
through theCoosa
River. In the second article,^ Mr. Charles T.Simpson showed
that hehad come
to the identical conclusionon
the basis of purely biologic evidence,namely
the distribution of certain pearl musselswhich
are specifically identical in thetwo
river systems.Itisthenevident that at thetime
when
theTennessee River flowed directlysouthward from
Chattanooga,and
nottoward
the west asnow, emptying
into the Mississippiembayment
far to the east of themouth
of the Mississippi River, theS.minor
inhabited theupper
drainageofeasternAlabama and
western Georgiaincluding theAppa-
lachian Valleyat least as far north as east central Tennessee.
We have
thus not onlya satisfactoryexplanation of the occurence of S.minor
in the upper Tennessee, but the evidence is pretty con- clusive that this species existed in its presentform
as early as the late Miocene,and
that the genus Sternotherus consequentlyismuch
older.
The
contraryopinion, namely, that the Kinosternons are of very recent origin, becauseno
fossil Kinosternid has been recorded, consequentlyfalls to theground and
proveshow
dangerous it is to baseany
conclusionsupon
the negative fact of no paleontological record. Moreover, the lacking paleontological evidence has recentlybeen
furnishedby
the find of a fossil species of Kinosternon in Arizona, collectedby
Dr. J.W.
Gidleyand
