182 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. 88 . 7. Subcosta and radius as far apart as the veins behind them, . and a connecting transverse vein Annandalia. The tip of the wing clearly falcons; at least five radial sectors; coast .. area very wide and some of the crossing veins connected Drepanacra.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 183 NEURONEMA SIMILIS, new species

Body, legs, antennae and wings distinctly pale yellowish, forewing with brown tinge along posterior margin, most conspicuous along concave outer margin; some tiers slightly but rather broadly edged with light brown; and it has some veins near the tip. The lower branch of the second fork of the third radial sector ends in a sharp tip of the wing; across the vein well in front of the first radial sector and.

Face pale yellow, a brown spot on each side below the eye and continuing down to the clypeus; pale antennae; pronotum pale in middle, with broad brown stripe on each side, rest pale pale, darker at base of wings; belly pale brown above, paler below; legs pale, without spots, hind tibiae swollen. Forewing pale, veins mostly pale, sparsely marked with brown, brown gradations, a small transverse brown spot from medius to cubitus and at bases of radial sectors, margin dark with a few pale spots; Hindwings with pale veins and brown gradations, a pale dark mark at base of anus.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 187

The forewings have the costal surface much less broad and the costal line less, so that no cell is more than three times as wide as long, and 6 to 10 from the costal line to the base of the wing is partially black on the outer half; the inner degrees are dark, also sometimes the base of the radial sector, otherwise the tives are pale. In the hind wings, some of the pads and radials are dark on one side, and the gradations are partially or completely dark.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 191 CHRTSOPA ALETHES, new species

The head markings are very similar to hicristata^ but the costal line is mostly pale, only a few near base are darkened, and the stigmatic area of the costa has cross veins; the particle is larger than in hicristata. It also occurs in Shantung and was identified by Petersen as hipunctata Burmeister, described from Japan, but Burmeister man-. Abdomen pale above, dark on sides and at ends of joints; Venter pale, darker at tips of.

MUSEUM vol.88 joints; legs pale, first femora mostly black above, tibia also with dark stripe above, apical half of tarsus dark; hind femora mostly dark, but a light stripe on each side. Three cross veins before radial sector in forewing, eleven branches after radial sector, the cubital fork runs closer to the margin than usual, the arching vein from tip of cubital fork is not as long as in floridiis, only three connections to the cubitus and these are not crossed, the first branch of cubitus beyond the cubital fork is much further from the next than in floridus, about nine cubital cross veins before cubital fork and none of them crossed. In hind wing but one crossvein before radial sector 11 branch to radial sector, the first farther basad than in fioridus.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 197 RHYACOPHILA GRAHAMI, new species

Forewing mainly brown, with many small pale spots, usually on or near the costal area in front of the stigma, along veins, and an oblique area over the apical cells, a white spot on the edge of each apical cell; posteriorly towards the base are two larger, pale areas, sometimes connected, both somewhat triangular, usually posterior to the anal vein, but the outermost extending anteriorly to the cubitus; there is a lot of black hair along the cubitus and anal veins. Venation, as in other species, fork one clearly ahead of fork two in forewing, not in hindwing; outer edge of wing barely convex. Legs pale, fore and mid-shin predominantly dark, but a narrow pale band slightly anterior to the tip.

Forewings brown, densely and fairly evenly sprinkled with pale spots, the brown with short golden hair, the pale spots with white hair; very black hair near cubitus and anal veins. The pale spots are most numerous along veins, many in the costal region, one on the margin in each apical cell, no major pale areas. NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM ZECHWAN — BANKS 199 Venation much as in others; fork one clearly before fork two in.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 199 Venation much as in others; fork one plainly before fork two in

Head, palpi and antennae pale yellow, with white hair on head, apex with a brown stripe on each side near middle; antennae un-. This is the species which Ulmer, in his "Fauna Sinica," treats as Rhyacophilajaponica; the inferior appendages are very sun-shaped, but the superior parts are very different from Morton's figure and description of the type. I have described these females because of the remarkable orthopteroid ovipositor; they cannot be the females of any males of Eimalopsyke that I have seen, and the females are described for several that I have not seen.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM ZECHWAN —^BANKS 203 the median vein is much before the base of the third cell. In the hind wings the small cell at the end of the united subcosta and radius is incomplete; in males the titillates ai'e forked at the tip. The slightly curved processes arise on each side near the base of the superior plate, which is very long, broad and narrowed.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 205 wings pale broAvn, spotted and dotted with hyaline or whitish, hair

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 205wings pale brown, mottled and dotted with hyaline or whitish hair. The genitalia are moselyi in plan, but the lateral processes of the upper plate are very short and stubby; titillators are very hard to counter. The eyes of the male are large and close to the antennae, relatively larger than in moselyi; the antennae have a dark mark at the tip of each joint so expanded as to give the appearance of a spiral mark.

The female from Kuansliien is of the same size and appearance, and may belong to this species. The size would fit any of the four small types; Navas gives a figure of the anal region of the forewing with a mark which I have not seen in any of my specimens; S.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 211

212 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol.88 discal cell for more than the width of the cell; fork three also back about the width of the cell. On the forks of the rear wing, there is also one back per flat cell more than the width of the cell. The tip of the last abdominal segment is bent down into the outer lobe, which is covered with strong black spines; below (from the side) a pale elongate upper process, and below this intermediate hooked processes, its tip (seen from the side) has a slender inner tooth and a rounded outer lobe; below are two broad truncated lobes, each tip hairless, and above are two curved reddish spine-like pieces with a long tooth near the tip and another not so long nearer the base, best seen from behind.

In most males the wing membrane is slightly brownish and with very small pale spots; hairs on face largely yellowish, black on each side of eyes, those on vertex mostly pale, but a few black each. Pseudopotamorltes peniculus Forsslund appears to be very close to this species, but Forsslund's figures show slight differences in details. Forewings pale yellow, a little darker in the anal area and near cubitus, the outer marginals slightly darker, no distinct irrorations.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 213

Expanded 50 mm or more; tip of abdomen without tuft of long hair, lower part of slope black with small tubercles; at the base of the intermediate segment there is a pair of bristle-bearing warts on each side. Hind tibia with a row of long, curved, white hairs behind, small species; crest of black hairs near tip of abdomen, above. Viewed from the side, clavate superior appendages hang down, and intermediate ones are more slender, the lower appendages arch upwards and cover more than half.

Lower appendages from below are short on the imeric margin, very long on the outer side, the apical margin is concave. The female shows from above a broad central piece with angular notches in the middle, each with a thin finger at the tip; on each side of this central portion is a broad rounded lobe with an oval indented hairy area; below this upper part is a broad pale lamina, its outer edge heavier and broadly notched in the middle; below the latter there is an even larger projection, the middle part is pale, broadly rounded, and the almost projecting lateral lobe is black. From these genitalia it is evidently Psevdostenophylax in the sense of Martynov; but the hindwings show no special hairs or scales in the anal region; but there are many tubercles on the membrane and many long fine hairs.

216 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol.88 norm with pale brown spots, more or less connected. The tip of the abdomen of the male has a tuft of black hairs above, below a large oblique area clothed with short hairs, this area paler than in mimus, but with dark outer corners; middle teeth are low and very wide (quite unlike minimus); the lower plates are small. The tip of the female abdomen, from above, shows the two usual spine-like processes very distant and curved towards each other.

Forewings very short and broad, apex broadly rounded, convex with costal margin, discal cell not as long as usual but slightly longer than pedicel, a fork not as wide as discal cell posterior to disc ; apical cells. The tip of the abdomen of the male shows the usual sloping area, very broad, brown, covered with appressed hairs. In the female, the apex of the abdomen from above shows two rather broad, somewhat quadrangular plates, each with a curved back.

NEUROPTEROID INSECTS FROM SZECHWAN — BANKS 217

Although this species, as regards genitalia, better resembles Pseudostenophylax, I place it near Trichophilax^ as it has no specialized hairs or scales on the hind wings, and the hairs on the upper abdomen are much longer than I have seen on any other . other limnephilids. However, these hairs are not as long as Mosely .. figures for the genotype; it differs in the genitalia, in longer first .. apical fork, in the malepalpi, etc. His figure shows the terminal pieces of the penile sheath shorter and bent, and the lower appendages, although triangular, are not as long as in monticola.

Its name hirsutus would be very appropriate, but it does not say that the hair is longer than normal, only that it is quite dense or thick. Venation is common in Tenuicomis and in Wopunctatus, but in the forewing the disc cell is not twice as long as its pedicel, and in the fork of the hindwing there is no extension back onto the disc cell (considerably the case in other species) .
