FRESH-WATER FISHES OF LIBERIA — SCHULTZ 307

KEY TO THE GENERA AND SPECIES OF MORMYRIDS REPORTED FROM LIBERIA

The following specimens, from St, Pauls River, were collected by Rolla P. Mormyrops MtJiiLEK, in Wiegmann's Bue. The following data from the above specimens: Dorsal rays 25 and 26; anal 41; chest 10; scales 88 and 89; 16 scales around caudal peduncle; teeth tI ;!!;origin of dorsal over twelfthrayofanal.

FRESH-WATER FISHES OF LIBERIA — SCHULTZ 315 Genus NEOLEBIAS Steindachner

The collections of the National Museum contain the following specimens, taken by Dr. Alestes rutilus Boulenger, Freshwater Fish Catalog Africa, vol. fAlestes macrolepidotus Hubbrecht, Notes Leyden Mus., vol.

FRESH-WATER FISHES OF LIBERIA — SCHULTZ 317 Family CYPRINIDAE

A large oval black spot on the back of the caudal peduncle; mid axis of body with an indistinct narrow blackish line; scales crossing lateral line 27 or 28, with 41/2 above and 2^4 below lateral line;. 12 scales around the caudal peduncle and usually 10 (rarely 11) in front of the back, both catfishes about as long or slightly longer.

FRESH-WATER FISHES OF LIBERIA SCHULTZ 319

The main feature of this new genus consists of the fine lines of papillae or pores, almost parallel, in groups on the sides of the muzzle, cheeks, opercular apparatus, between the dentary bones on the lower jaw and on the dorsal anterior surface of the head . . In terms of the character of the parallel pore lines, this new genus resembles the Asian genera Cyclocheilichthys and Oreichthys Smith. All dimensions are expressed in hundredths of the standard length, those for the holotype are given first, followed by a paratype.

Under the suborbital bones on the lower half of the snout and on the cheeks are vertical rows of minute pores or papillae, slightly raised above the general level of the skin; on the lower part of the muzzle above. These parallel lines are most visible on the top of the head between the front of the eyes and the dorsal surface of the snout, but are absent at the tip of the snout and along the middle sides of the snout, where the blackish lateral band extends forward to the tip of the snout. The color pattern consists of a black lateral band along the mid-axis of the body from the tip of the snout to the mid-basal part of the caudal-fin rays, which is more or less visible to the tip of these rays in most specimens;

FRESH-WATER FISHES OF LIBERIA SCHULTZ 323

The color is brown above, paler below, with a blackish band along the mid-axis divided into 4 black spots in some specimens, which more or less merge with the black band, or the spots are absent except for the last one at the base of the mid-caudal fin rays; when the spots are present, the first occurs just above the lateral line on about the 5th and 6th scale rows crossing the lateral line; the second black spot just behind and below the back of the base of the dorsal fin, the third above and. This new species is somewhat similar to Barhus frispilus but differs in its color pattern; the spots, when present, number 4 instead of 3; it differs from other cyprinids with a similar color pattern in having the suborbital bone below the posterior half of the eye expanded, 3 times wider than the adjacent anterior suborbital bone, and covering at least % of the cheek in combination with the free simple rays of dorsal and anal fins, the penultimate simple ray attached to the last simple ray of these fins by a membrane and not at all fused or attached to it.

FRESH-WATER FISHES OF LIBERIA — SCHULTZ 325

The most distinctive color mark is a single blackish oval spot, almost eye-sized, on the back of the caudal peduncle along the mid-axis, covering the last three scales, but only the width of one scale along the lateral line; snout tip blackish; pigment over lanes more intense and on nape. This new species differs from other species in the genus Barbus by having the large caudal spot in combination with 27 or 28 scales in the lateral line; 12 scales around the caudal peduncle, 10 or 11 scales in front of the dorsal fin, among other characters. Dorsal and anal fins single, very long with joint rays, but without spine; adipose salt absent; gill membranes free from isthmus; eye with a free edge; pectoral and pelvic fins present, well developed.

Dorsal rays 82 to 89; anal 63 to 77 (see table for ray counts); dorsal and anal fins not actually joined to the caudal, but no free space between them; depth 8 in standard length, 9 in overall length; maxillary barbel reaching almost to tip of pectoral fin; nasal whisker reaching to upper edge of gill opening; about 8 to 10 branchiae branch off into the accessory gill chamber Clarlas salae Hubrecht.

FRESH-WATER FISHES OF LIBERIA SCHULTZ 327

Width of the head at the front of the eye IVi times the muzzle; length of the nose bar not above the eye; eye 4% in the head and 1% in the snout; first and second soft dorsal rays running the length of the head; inner edge of pectoral spines strongly serrated; lobes of the caudal fin not long and pointed along the length of the head Chrysichthys nigrcdig'itatus (Lacepede) 8&. Width of the head at the front of the eyes equal to the length of the muzzle; nose bar equal to one eye; eye SV2 in the bead and I14 in the muzzle; first and second soft spines slightly longer than the head and 1/2 longer than the dorsal spine; inner edge of pectoral spines strongly serrated; lobes of the caudal fin length and pointed the upper lobe 1% of the length of the head. Dorsal rays about 30 to 33; anal 41 to 52; adipose fin supported by extensions of the neural spines; gill rakers 18 to 20; base of fatty tissue as long as the length of the head and slightly shorter than the base of the back with radius; body depth 5% to 6 in standard length and 6 to 7 in overall length; the nose bar extends to the opposite insertion of the pectoral fin; maxillary barbel extends slightly behind the tips of the pectoral fins; margins of anal, caudal and dorsalfins white; body blackish above, white below.

The adipose dorsal fin is not continuous with the caudal fin; origin of dorsal fins shortly before insertion of pelvis; tail. fin with a broad black line across the central part; basal third white and distal white; skin at base of caudal fin rays extending posteriorly over base of caudal fin rays in the form of 6 or 7 dermal papillae or processes; eye very small, 4 snout; depth 6^^ in standard length and Sin overall length; some specimens have 5 pale saddles on the back, one above the gill opening, another before the dorsal origin, and another below the dorsal base; the fourth at the origin of the adipose and the last at the rear base of the adipose fin;. The adipose dorsal fin continues with the caudal fin; origin of dorsal fin behind base of pelvic fins; caudal fin plain grayish, round; upper body pale brownish with small scattered spots arranged in an irregular row on the sides; lateral line pores far apart; eye very small, about 5 in snout; depth about 7% to 8 of standard length and 9^4 of total length; anal rays 11 Paramphilius fi.restonei, new species.

It is very likely that an error was made in considering the fin rays of this 98 mm. specimen, unless the skin was dissected from one side of the middle fins. It is positively necessary, except in rare cases, to dissect the skin of one side of the median fin in order to count the rays.
