Clarke, 1963, Catalog of the type specimens of Microlepidoptera in the British Museum (Natural History) described by Edward Meyrick, vol These two, from ParamodePurace, are larger than the other Meyrick types and the forewing pattern is less spotted and the reticulation finer.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 13

Labial palpus white; basal two-thirds of second segment heavily overlaid with grayish fuscous; third segment thinly irrorated with greyish fuscous. Forewing base color grayish, largely obscured by tawny, grayish-fuscous and lead-metallic scales; on costa three reddish-brown bars alternating with lead metallic transverse facades; inner angle narrowly marked black; along fold a row of scattered black scales; at costal two-thirds an ill-defined whitish area; at the end of the cell a conspicuous oblong, oval, ocher-white spot in front and followed by black scales; tornus and gracaceous orange; apex marked by several ill-defined transverse, reddish-brown fasciae; cilia clay mixed with gray.

18 PROCEDURE OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. more extensive than in glaucojuscana and the hindwing of the former. much larger than that of the latter. Ductus bursae very short, barely distinguishable from bursa copulatrix; accessory bursa from posterior margin of bursa copulatrix. membranous mth spicule inner surface.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 19

Male with dirty hindwings spotted white with gray fuscous; fuscous of a non-female color, with darker spots ill-defined; cilia white ochreous with gray subbasal line. Front ocherous white; femur and tibia fuscous black on outer side; tarsal segments with broad black fuscous band;.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 21 Type-locality: Brazil, Santa Catharina, Nova Teutonia

In constantia only the outermost apex is white, the remaining part of the apical third is largely filled with fuscous and lead gray scales. No comparison of the male genitalia can be made because the male of constantia is unknown. Forelegs ochreous white tinged with fuscous on the outside; interlegs ochreous white suffused mth grayish fuscous; tibia with fuscous spot distaUyonyside; tarsal segments narrowly margined whitish distally;.

24 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM

In general, the mendora resembles the North American Cochylis Jelix (Walsingham), but is smaller, lighter, and lacks the dark subterminal spot of this species. The ostium of the mendora is twice as wide as that oi felix, and the rotation of the bursa copulatrix is much less extensive than in the latter.

28 NATIONAL MUSEUM PROCEEDINGS vol. third of the back to well beyond the middle of the cell, an outwardly oblique ochreous-yellowish-brown, transverse band with fuscous scales at base and apex; beyond this fascia, in the middle of the back, an elongate, transverse, greyish-olive spot with its apex near the end of the cell; on tornus a small fuscous spot; beyond the end of the cell a large, irregular, transverse, fuscous spot followed by a curved line of ground color, the latter followed by a broad crescent-shaped, subapical, fuscous, transverse line. cilia mixed ochre, fuscous and grey. Forelegs ochreous buff strongly infuscate on the outside; middle legs similar to fore legs, but with less fuscous; hind legs ochreous buff lightly spotted with gray on femora and tibia; tarsal segments marked with black fuscous on the outside. Beginning of the ductus seminalis around the middle of the ductus bursae; accessory bursa a rounded, sclerotized sac dorsal to the bursa copulatrix.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 29

30 NATIONAL MUSEUM PROCEEDINGS vol. only clearly visible in the apical region), heavily overlaid with ocher yellow and olivaceous gray; basal half of costa ochraceous buff; from basal thu'd of back to cell, an oblique subrectangular blackish-fuscous and tawny spot bounded on each side by a narrow whitish line; basad of this shade is an olive shade parallel to it and extending well into the cell; beyond the dark dorsal mark a greyish tint, terminated by a few leaden scales, extends to the tornus; on tornus encircled, olive-like spot extending to vein6 and bordered externally by ocher-yellowish-brown and blackish-fuscous scales; from apical third to termen at vein 4, an outwardly curved crescentic fascia, broadest in middle, shaded with ochaceous tawny on costa and edged with blackish fuscous in terminal half; on the costa, on either side of the crescent mark, a small patch of leaden scales; cilia buff with a slightly darker basal band. Hind wing ochreous white basal shade to light ochreous apically; cilia ochre-white becoming darker around the tip. Labial palpus ochreous white; second segment shaded ochracaceous buff basally on outer side; third segment brown dorsoposteriorly.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 31

Forewing base color ocher white; outermost costal margin, ochreous yellow-brown to two-thirds, shading to olivaceous brown for a short distance towards the cell, parallel to costa; two-thirds of the olive-brown form a triangle, the apex of which extends almost to the end of the cell; from near base to tornus a broad shade of gray with small, short, transverse strigulae on dorsal margin and towards tornus two transverse brassy bars; apical third reddish brown, interrupted by an oblique line of ground color pierced with pale reddish brown, and an apical area of the same color; from the dorsal margin near the base, an olive shade extending into the cell; cilia ochracaceous buff mixed with some paler scales. Forelegs ochreous white heavily overlaid with fuscous externally; metatarsus ochreous white; tibia suffused tawny on the outside; tarsal segments fuscous on the outside;. It is curious that not a single male of any of the three species has turned up, although the collection dates cover much of the year.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 33

Ground color forewing pale yellow; costa ocher buff on the basal fifth, followed by gray and then ocher buff, the three areas of equal length; From the inner corner, a slightly curved ochre-buff fascia extends to the end of the cell, where it ends in a few lead-gray shades. Bursa copulatrix membranous, with slight sculpture on the back and lined with short, small spines; accessory bursa of the junction of the ductus bursae and the bursa copulatrix. Labial palpus olive yellow; second segment deep olive-buff exterior except apex; third segment almost entirely deep yellow pale yellow. Antenna basal fuscous, discoloring apically gray.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 35 what darker laterally, thorax deep olive buff suffused with fuscous;

Forewing ground color buff distinctly marked and filled with dark olive buff; basal half of costa filled gray; on middle of costa a blackish-fuscous rectangular spot; two short transverse stripes of the same color slightly before and at the end of cell; before middle of terms two or three short, slender blackish-fuscous transverse stripes; from the base of a blackish-foxish costal patch an irregular dark olive-yellow transverse fascia reaching the middle of the back; from apical fourth of costa an outwardly curved, crescent-shaped, dark olive buff ending at vein 6; dorsum marked with scattered blackish-fuscous scales; underside strongly ingrown except outer half of costa; cilia olive buff. The sixth sternum is developed into a hollow evagination ending in two divergent arms, turned upwards on each side of the seventh segment.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 37

Similar in appearance to Irazona cognata (Walsingham), but is generally darker and has a much darker hindwing. Forewing ground color white; dorsum broadly marked with wood-brown and gray bars, all confluent; basal spot, from one-fifth of the costa to dorsum, grayish fuscous; on the costa, slightly beyond the center, a pale gray spot with two small, dark gray spots on the extreme costal margin; at the end of the cell a short, irregular, grayish stripe in the longitudinal direction with a small spot of fuscous scales at the tip; from costa, slightly anterior to the apex, to vein 6, an outwardly slanting gray bar with narrow margins with grayish fuscous and yellowish scales; extreme tip narrow gray; between the tip of the cell and the subapical bar several irregular, vaguely gray transverse strigulae; costal scales elongated beyond the basal patch and. Similar to icogramma but without the prominent subtornal spot and with a short subapical, transverse fascia.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 41

The decoration of the inner wall of the bursa-copulatrix is different, as it is composed of pinesinikogramma and fine ridges in turbula. Labial palpus white; second segment colored ochreous buff externally; third segment gray apically. Further differences may be seen in the genitalia, especially in the position of the sclerotized swelling, or evagination, from the bursa copulatrix.

NO. 3660 MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII CLARKE 49

This species is very similar in appearance to Phalonia sublimis Meyrick, but differs greatly in the genitalia. The female genitalia of diamphidi are firmly fused to the posterior margin of the seventh sternum, the genitalia of sublimis are not; besides, it is a theostium of diamphidia. Male sublimisis is unknown, but the genitalia of male diamphidia are unusually asymmetrical and the long aedeagus is fused to the anellus.

52 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM

Males are not known, but probably, when discovered, approach Diamphidi in the form of the genital organ. Superficially, the forewing of the hemitefras appears pale gray in the basal three-fifths and buff ochreous in the apical two-fifths. Fore ground color yellow ochre; on vein lb three small spots of lead-grey scales, and between the two basal cells, touching, a fuscous spot;.

MICROLEPIDOPTERA, XVII — CLARKE 55

On the basis of the male genitalia I place this species in Carolella, but on habitus it is far removed from the North American members of the genus. In asthenia, the apex of the median projection of the transtilla is spinous, but in the type genus, Pharmacis sartana Hubner, it is smooth. Foreleg creamy white; femur and tibia irrorate with fuscous on the outside; tarsus broad band with grayish fuscous; middle leg similar to front leg;.
