PARACONGER, A NEW GENUS WITH THREE NEW SPECIES OF EELS
(FAMILY CONGRIDAE)

(1958).Modern workers have
allocated these species to thegenus
Conger;however, they
possess characters incom- mon
that are sufficiently distinctive towarrant
the recognition of anew
genus.This new genus
ishere described withan
appraisal ofthe species, three ofwhich
arenew.

lateral line poreswere counted
in front of a per- pendicular linethrough
anus.The
pectoral rayswere counted
after the skinwas
dissectedfrom
the bases ofthese rays.Sensory pores and organs: The
sensory pores of the lateral line of thebody and
the cephalic poresystem
are useful in differentiating the various species.The
distribution of the pores along the lateral lineforthevariousspeciesare givenintable2.The
cephalic poresys-tem
for the species caudilimbatus isshown
in figure 1.The
species caudilimbatusand macrops have
the greatestdevelopment
of cephalic poresand
guianensis has theleast.The supratemporal
poreispresent inmacrops and
caudilimbatusbut
absent in the other species.Ten preoperculo-mandibular
pores occur in all the species (7mandibular and
3 opercular),exceptcaliforniensiswhich
has 11 (8mandibular and
3 opercular).
