Schmitt col- lected foraminiferafrom
anumber
of interesting localities.Among
these is a collection of material taken
by means
of a "bull-dog"snapper
from
shallowwater 10-20 fathoms,inCumberland
Bay,Juan
Fernandez Island, Chile. This represents a region very littleknown
as far as the foraminifera are concerned. Since d'Orbigny's classic
memoir
published in 1839 ^ almostno
records areknown from
the west coast ofSouth America
or adjacent islands.The
Challenger cruised in this regionand
the Albatrossmade
a trip aboutSouth America
onwhich
a few samples were collected, but thesehave
not beenworked up
for their contained foraminifera.The
Challenger dredged in the vicinity ofJuan Fernandez
but only in very deep water so that the recordshave
little incommon
with this shallow- water material.The
fauna isinterestingon
account of its association with other regions.Some
of the species areevidentlyEast Indian orAustralian in theirrelationship, such as Spirillina spinigera, Patellina advena, Tretomphalus huUoides,etc. Othersseem
to bemore
closely related to colder water faunas such as areknown from
the west coast ofNorth and
SouthAmerica
representedby
suchspecies as Gaudryina triangularis, Sigmoidella (Sigmoidina) pacijica,Elphidium
articularia, Bulimina patagonica, Angulogerina carinata,and
others.There
are a few representatives of pelagic species such as Glohigerina conglomerata, G. infiata, G. triloba, Globorotalia menardii,
and
G.truncatidinoides.
Some
of the species are representedby
too few specimens to allow a full descriptionand
identification.Some
ofthese are, however, of sufficient interest so thatfigures arehere given for future reference.Several of the species
have
proved to be new.The
