apparent on the outer rectrices.

Lesser wiugcoverts darkgrayish brown, distinctly bordered with dull ochraceous; middle covertswith theconcealed portion brownish-gray;

thissucceeded byapalergrayish shade, themost oftheexposedportion being opaquevelvety-black,formingadistinctbroad band; secondaries metallicdark bluish-green, changing to blue

and

violet, this succeeded by a subterminal

band

ofopaquevelvety-black, about .25 inwidth,

and

this by a terminalband of pure white of the

same

width; outer

webs

of the two lower tertials opaque black, the rest grayish-brown,

more

brown on outer webs; primaries brownish-slate, with slightly paler edges. Bill dusky(probablydark olivaceousinlife); legsandfeetlight yellowish-brown (probably orange in life).

Wing,

9.00; tail,3.G5; cul-

men, 1.75; greatest widthofbill, .68; depth of maxilla,through base, .55; tarsus, 1.40; middle toe, 1.70. [Described from No. 20,319 U. S.

Nat. Mus.]

Unlike the

somewhat

similarspeciesfrom Mazatlan{A.aherti), as well asthe female of A. boschas and both sexes of A.fulvigula, the whole throatis densely streaked, liliethe neck.

The

entire liningof the wing, with theaxillars,is pure white, as in allied species.

Gray'sHandlistquotes, underA.boschas, an^^A. freycineti, Bp.", with the locality " Sandwich I."standing opposite.

No

indicationis given, however, as to where Bonaparte's bird is described,

and

I have been unabletofindanyfurtherclue. Shouldthelocalityof^'A.freycineti" be the Sandwich Islands, it isvery probable that this is the

same

species.

The

female of A. wyvilUana scarcely needs comparison with that of A. boschas. Itis

much

smaller, the colorsaltogether darker, thespecu-

lum

green instead of violet,

and

preceded by a wideblacl' insteadof a wideivhiiebar.

The

white ocular ring is also a peculiar feature.

A

smallcollection of birds brought from Costa Eica by Mr. Jos6 C.

Zeledon includes several exceedingly rare

and

interesting species,

among

which

may

be mentioned a

young

male of Carpodectes nitidus, asecond specimenof Porzanacinereiceps, Lawr., the recently described

'''Zonotrichia'''' vulcani, and PhcenoptUa melanoxantha, besidesPyrgisoma

Lining of the wing grayish- white. [Type inMus. K. R.]

This well-marked species, although perhaps most like T. modestus (Caban.), isvery distinctfrom thatbird.

The

size is

much

greater, the

plumage

altogether grayer, and the bars on the tail broader and

more

sharply defined. Their characters

may

be moreprecisely contrasted, as follows:

T. modestus.—Wing, 2.30; tail, 2.25-2.35; bill, from nostril, .40-.45; tarsus, .80-.90

;

middle toe, .52-.58. Above, grayisli-umber, becoming gradually more grayish on the pileum. Tail cinnamon-umber, with narrow and rather indistinct bars of blackish less than half as wide astheinterspaces. Lowerpartsbuffy-white, without grayish shade across thejugulum; sides, flanks, and anal region, and crissumdeepochraceous. Hab.

The

most strikingcharacters of the two

known

speciesof thisgenus

may

be contrasted as follows:

P.ioissoneauti.

Tuftson side of neck pure white. Primaries andwing-covertsfer- rugiueous-umber. Jugulumfaintlysquamatedwith dusky. Hab.

The

proportions of both speciesare exceedingly variable, as

may

be seenfrom the accompanying tableof measurements, and are therefore ofnouse as specificcharacters.

The new

form (P. laivrencii)

was

also obtained by Mr. A. Boucardat Navarro, CostaEica, but that gentlemanevidentlyoverlooked the

more

importantdifferencesofplumage, though he alludestothe different color ofthe neck-tufts (Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond,3878,p.59),addingthathe does not "forthe present consider this differencesufficient to

make

another speciesofit".

Followingis a

more

detailed description of P.hoissoneauti, and tables ofmeasurementsofboth species.
