Three specimens of an undescribed species of Phycis were obtained by the U. S. Fish

Commisiou

during the past season.

The

largerone measured 0.242"^without caudaland two others respectively0.143" and

0.128'".

The

formeris the basis of the following diagnosis; the others being evidently immature

and

having the characteristics of the species, especially the length of thelin-tilaments, less pronounced.

Phycis Chesteri, sp.nov.

Head

contained in body (without caudal) 4J times, height of body 5 times. Diameter of orbitin length of head 3^ times, maxillary twice.

Barbelabout one-third ofdiameter of orbit.

Vent

situated under 12th rayofseconddorsal,

and

equidistantfromtipofsnoutand endofsecond dorsal. Distanceof dorsalfinfrom snout equaltotwice the lengthofthe mandible; the thirdray ofthe firstdorsalisextremelyelongate, extending

toaijoint(33drayofseconddorsal)two-thirds ofthe distancefromsnout totipofcaudal,itslengthmorethan twicethatofthehead,

and more

than four times as long as the rays immediatelyprecedingand followingit.

Anal

fin inserted immediately behind the vent, its distance from the root of the ventrals equal to that of the dorsal from the snout.

As

in theotherspecies ofthegenus,* theventraliscomposedofthree rays, the first two

much

prolonged.

The

first is contained three times in the length ofthebody, thesecond isalmostthreetimesas longas the head, reaching to the40th anal ray or 3 of the distancefrom snout to tip of caudal; the third is shorterthan thediameter ofthe orbit.

The

pectoral is four times as long as the operculum. Scales large and thin, easilywrinkling with the folding of thethick loose skin, par- ticularly in the median lineofthesides of the body. Lateralline

much

broken on the i)osteriorhalf ofthe body.

Scales 7, 90-91, 28,

*Acriticalstudy of the ventralfinsof Phyciscompelsustobelievethat the ventral fin iscomposedof three rays coveredatthebase withathick shininsuchmanneras to obscure the third, short one, and to jointhe othertwoso that they appearlikea singlebifidray. InyoungindividualsofPhycischuss, thethirdray hasitsextremity protruding from the sheath, though in adults it becomes entirely enveloped, thus givingriseto the false definitionswhich have been given for thisgenus. Anadult specimenol Phycis furcatus,Flem.(No. 17,371of theNationalMuseumcollection),has thethirdventral ray protruding.

A

species of this genus

was

described, under the

referred tbe species to the

new

itsheightat the middle of the caudal peduncleone twenty-ninth of the same.

Scales arranged in about 115 vertical rows and about 3S horizontal ones, about 11 being between the origin of the dorsal and the lateral lineand about 27 below the lateral line. Lateral lineslightly curved ui)ward in the anterior fourthofits length.

Length of head contained

more

than four and one-quartertimes in thatof the body; its width half itslength andlessthandoublethat of interorbital area.

The

barbel is short, itslengthbeing scarcely equal tohalf the diame- terof theorbit and aboutone-tenth thelength ofthe head.

The

width of interorbital areais about equal to the longitudinaldiameter of the orbit, inthe largerspecimen slightlygreater.

The

diameterof the orbit is equal toor slightly greater than one-fourth thelength of thehead.

The

length of the snout isequal to thatofthe operculumand less than width of interorbital area.

The

maxillary extends to verticalfrom posterior margin of the orbit, itslength about equal to the greatest width of the head. Mandible equals one-eighth of total length without caudal.

Snout equal to operculum in length, obtusely pointed,

much

de- pressed, its lateral outline subcouical, a conspicuous keel extending backward along the lower line of the orbit to its posterior margin.

The

head and

mouth

closely resemble those of

some

species of Macru-

rus, except that the keelis covered withsmall, smooth scalesandisuot overhanging. Lipsscaleless.

Teeth in thejaws imperfectly serial, villiform, recurved; a smallob- long patch of similar teeth on the head of the vomer; none onthe palatines.

Firstdorsalfin inserted atadistance from thesnout

somewhat

greater than twice theheight of the

body

at the ventrals; its first rayis

much

prolonged, itslength greater thanthat of the head, and nearly aslong orlonger (in the largerspecimen) than the distance from the snout to the beginning of thedorsal.

The

second rayiscontained less thanfour times, the third six timesorless in thetirst, the fourth about ten times.

The

length of the base of second dorsal is

somewhat

more than twice the distance ofits insertionfromthe snout; its greatest height, which

is in the posterior fourth ofitslength(near the -10th ray), is contained aboutsix orseven timesin thelength ofitsbase.

The

ventissituated ata point equidistant from snoutand tipofcau- dal, underthe19th rayofsecond dorsal fin.

The

anal fin isinserted at a distancebehind itequal tolength of second anal ray. Its length of base isslightly

more

than halfthat ofseconddorsal. Ithasa consider- able depression initsmiddleoutline.

The

last raysof dorsal andanal are ofequal length,

and

are directlyoppositeeachother.

The

caudalseemstobe

somewhat

rounded.

The

length ofthemiddle rays contained

more

than ninetimesin totallength withoutcaudal,and

more

than tentimesinlength includingcaudal.

Pectorals narrow, inserted under the base of first dorsal. In tbo smallerspecimen they reach to the perpendicular from the niuth raj of thesecond dorsal,in length equalling the greatest heightof thebody.

Ventrais inserted at a distance from tip of snout equal tohalf the lengthof anal base; thesecond ray nearly twiceaslong as thefirst,

and

inthesmallerspecimen, inwhich it isunmutilated, nearly as long asthe head.
