As
a result of this interest insmall mammals
as well aslarge,seven specimens
of a voleand two
of ashrew, prepared and presented hy Mr. Sheldon,
arenow
in the BiologicalSurvey
Collection.The shrews appear
tobe
indistinguishablefrom
the species of theadjacent mainland
coast (Sorex obscurus alascensis),but
the voles differ sowidely
as to requirea new name. For
the privilege of describing thisnew form,
Iam

Thisinsularform differsfrom itsmainland relatives chiefly in decidedly larger size. It belongs to the so-called ''operariusgroup"
which
properlyincludes, besides anumber
of Alaskan forms, several of widedistribution inEurasia. Representatives ofthisgroupdoubtle.ssen- tered Alaska fromAsiaatatimenot very remote, for althoughanumber
ofAlaskan forms arenow
diflferentiated, all are very closely alliedand none show any marked
departure from theAsiaticforms.The
onehere described seems asworthyofspecific rank asany
of the others but theamount
ofcranialvariation inall theformsand
the general uniformity of coloration leadsone to believethatthey mightwell be rankedassub- species. If thisweredone, however, M.oeconomus, M.kamschaticus, and
probably M.ratticepsoughttobe includedastheydifTerfromM.
