been the subject of theo- logical reflection. Herbert Anderson, along with a changing group of coauthors, estab- lishes a fresh framework in which to understand and minister to people in a variety of family situations. The books are organized chronologically around five major moments in the family life cycle. As in Erik Erikson s life stages, the resolution of the crises in the later phases depends on earlier accomplishments.

The cycle begins with a critical first step—that of "leaving home,"

not just literally through physical separation but metaphorically through emotional differentiation.

Anderson, professor of pastoral the- ology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and author of The Family and Pastoral Care, and Kenneth R.

Mitchell, professor of pastoral care at Eden Theological Seminary until

his sudden death in 1991 (Anderson and Mitchell had intended to coauthor the whole series), define leaving home as "a readiness, willingness and ability to make one's own decisions, and to make one s way in the world without undue emotional dependence on the home one has come from." Recogni- tion of and open communication about the unavoidable loss and grief that ac- company change, as well as parental blessing and family and religious ritual, assure safe passage into new roles and self-understandings.

A better, albeit awkward, title for the first book in the series might have been

"Leaving Home and Making a Home."

Despite the conventional Christian emphasis on pilgrimage and the Amer- ican obsession with independence, sus- taining community and creating a home are by no means simple or negli- gible tasks. On their concluding page, Anderson and Mitchell even speculate, correctly I think, that finding a home rather than leaving one may be the dominant agenda of our time.

More important, this change in title would highlight the prominent part that paradox—especially the paradox of "being separate together"—plays in all five books. Paradox does not just offer a way to hold the values of auton- omy and community together. It typi- fies the human relationship with God.

As Parker Palmer argues, the cross ex- presses the greatest paradox—"to live we have to die." New life begins with loss. The death of old loyalties pre- cedes the new creation in Christ.

Whether or not one agrees with this theology, the tension of paradox does capture essential qualities of Christian life in families. The task is not to over- come paradox but to learn to live well within it. As the introduction to the second book asserts, paradox can even provide the occasion for transforma- tion. Consequently, leaving home, like all family transitions, is ultimately a re- ligious act reminding us that all human homes are important but transitory.

Our ultimate destiny is to follow God s call. Conviction about Gods participa- tion in creation and redemption makes it possible to take the risks of leaving, committing, birthing, promising and living alone.

Becoming Married is the volume many will want to read prior to mar- riage. It might also help parents "stay close and stay out," an insight gleaned by Anderson himself during his chil- dren's wedding preparations. This vol- ume seems to be written with greater confidence and command and is packed full of ideas and suggestions.

Anderson and Robert Cotton Fite, a pastoral counselor, identify two pri- mary tasks in becoming married: 1) understanding the legacies handed to us from our families of origin (which are often a major source of conflict)—

rules, rituals, roles and expectations, and conceptions of right and wrong;

and 2) planning a wedding and mar- riage that best link these legacies with particular religious traditions and the vision of the kind of family the couple desires to become.

The genogram, as described by An- derson and Fite, provides a wonderful alternative to the premarital personality inventories widely used to predict mari- tal success or divorce. Creative use of the genogram, a map of the significant relationships of one's family of origin from a multigenerational point of view, helps partners discern their family sto- ries and talk about what one wishes to leave behind and what one wants to re- tain. Instead of concentrating on indi- vidual personality quirks, the genogram emphasizes family history, story and fu- ture visions. This method seems much more amenable than questionnaires to linking personal stories to stories of Gods redeeming action.

married. An overarching theme in all five books predominates here: much better than the myth of a picture-per- fect wedding and relationship is the honest acknowledgment of the con- tradictory, parabolic reality of genuine marriage and its paradoxes of intimacy and distance, loss and gain. As framed by themes in the Jewish and Christian tradition, marital success ultimately rests upon taking the covenant partner with "abiding seriousness."

biding seriousness must extend equally to children, the subject of the third book. The volume suggests that our theologizing is limited unless it contains an anthropology "inclusive of children." Written with Susan B. W.

Johnson, a Chicago pastor, the effort to establish familial ideals while avoid- ing blame leads to claims that appear contradictory on the surface: a variety of family forms can nurture children, but two parents are generally better than one. Anderson and Johnsons purpose—to negotiate a "middle way between families as they are and fami- lies as they ought to be"—makes such

seeming contradictions inevitable.

The book traces a history and social pattern of indifference to children and constructs the parameters of "good enough" families within the "village"

necessary to raise children well.

Promising Again takes the depar- ture of children from the family as its entry into the broader question of re- newing marriage when established modes of living together no longer work. The title also focuses on one of the series' themes: the paradox that all steady commitments are dynamic and ever changing. The centrality of change means that promises often cannot be kept in the way they were made, and sometimes "creative fideli- ty" requires breaking promises.

Promising again can also mean mak- ing new commitments after death or divorce. David Hogue and Marie Mc- Carthy, both professors of pastoral theology, bring to the book contrasting experiences of making promises—

Hogue is in a second marriage and McCarthy is in a religious order.

The final book, coauthored by Freda A. Gardner, focuses on living

alone after t h e death of a spouse. Yet this p h a s e does n o t always follow in chronological order. Adults of all ages t o d a y m a y find t h e m s e l v e s living in s u c h a h o u s e h o l d . A n d e r s o n a n d G a r d n e r cover t h e u n i q u e situations of those who live alone after divorce or d e a t h , t h o s e w h o have always lived alone, a n d those w h o live alone t e m - porarily (e.g., d u r i n g a long-distance relationship or t h e illness or imprison- m e n t of a spouse). This careful explo- ration of t h e complex meaning of liv- ing alone is a welcome contribution to t h e series. As t h e book n o t e s , living alone is likely for a variety of reasons to b e c o m e m o r e a n d m o r e c o m m o n . It is time to dispel t h e myth that those w h o live alone a r e u n h a p p y , i n c o m - plete o r irresponsible.

T h e series is g r o u n d e d in at least two t h e o r e t i c a l p e r s p e c t i v e s , mostly kept in t h e background: that of family systems theory, with occasional excur- sions into psychoanalytic understand- ings, and that of a pragmatic, practical a p p r o a c h t o theology. T h e l a t t e r r e -

ceives its best articulation in t h e sec- o n d b o o k w h e r e A n d e r s o n a n d F i t e distinguish between a theology of and a t h e o l o g y / o r t h e family. F o r t h e most part, t h e books adopt t h e second a p - p r o a c h . W h i l e t h e difference m a y seem slight, it rests on t h e assumption t h a t theology, like t h e S a b b a t h , is m a d e for people a n d not t h e reverse.

A theology for m a r r i a g e draws on t h e m e s in religious t r a d i t i o n s (e.g., hospitality, justice, compassion, sacri- fice, reconciliation, joy) that n e e d not b e specifically a b o u t m a r r i a g e o r t a k e n from theologies of m a r r i a g e . Scriptural a n d theological references that are conventionally part of theolo- gies of marriage (e.g., Genesis 1-3, or L u t h e r s ideas on t h e e s t a t e of m a r - riage) are cited only as n e e d e d .

T h e authors are sensitive t o g e n d e r and ethnic differences, while writing primarily from the perspective of mid- dle-class, h e t e r o s e x u a l , E u r o p e a n - American culture. T h o u g h questions specific to gays a n d lesbians a r e sel- dom raised, several of t h e series' top-

ics pertain to people who are not het- erosexual. All t h e volumes contain six chapters, with a common introduction modified for each book. T h e final vol- u m e concludes with an epilogue invit- ing readers to engage in further con- versation on t h e contested demise and flourishing of families.

Parish ministers spend a great deal of time responding to families in crisis.

T h e series can make a difference in t h e a d e q u a c y of t h o s e responses. T h e books would also make excellent gifts for people struggling with various tran- sitions of life. Families in c o n t e m p o - rary society, b y virtue of t h e i r s h e e r complexity, a r e o n e of t h e few topics t h a t d e s e r v e t h e a t t e n t i o n of a full- fledged series. And w h e n it comes to comprehending t h e delicate delibera- tions of family living, Anderson is o n e of the wisest people I know.
