to range to this state,

believethespecimens thenreferred toit

were only full

plumaged

winter examples of atricapillus proper.

There has beenreceived

by

theU. S. National

Museum,

from Capt. Geo. D. Kitchens of Smiths Island, Virginia, the followingbirds, allhaving been takenatthatplace.

The

Sooty Shearwater{Puffinus griseus) received in

May,

1909,which

isas far as

known

thefirstrecordfor Virginia.

The

Dovekie (Allealle), aspecimen

was

shotJanuary8, 1912, andsent in the flesh to the

Museum.

This species

had

been recorded previously from Smiths Island.

The

Razor-billed

Auk

(Alcatarda),aspecimen

was

shot

March

29, 1912, and sentto the

Museum

inthe flesh,and

upon

preparing thespecimenit

was found to be in a

much

emaciated condition.

Least

Bittern.

In theAuk, 1911, I recorded the nestingof this speciesnearBoulderinJune, 1910. Anothernest

was

found in the

same

place on July 9, 1911,withfive eggs.

They

wereall

hatched

by

July20,

and

oneofthe

young was

seen

by

Dr.

Morley

outof the nestonJuly30. Thesetwonesting records areapparently thesecond andthirdforthestate.

Rough-legged Hawk. —

Thisisthe only

hawk

atall

common

inthewinterontheplains ofBoulder Co. Ihaveobserveditfrequently, singlyor

two

and sometimes threein the courseof atripbetweenthe following datesof arrivalanddeparture:

Nov.27, 1909-Mar.19, 1910; Oct.30, 1910-Mar. 14,1911; Oct.15, 1911- Mar. 31, 1912.

A

specimen

was

broughttothe

museum

oftheUniversity ofColoradoonFeb. 10, 1910.

Glaucidiumgnomapinicola. Rocky Mountain Pygmy Owl. —

This small owl

was

fairly

common

inthecity of Boulderfromthefirst

week

of Januarytothemiddle of February, 1912.

One

bird

was

found dead

and

otherswere observedinvarious partsofthecity; the

number

ofindividuals of course

may

not have been over three or four, astheywere observed singly.

On two

occasions (at8a. m.) I

saw

this owl feeding on a bird about the sizeof anEnglishSparrow.

They

appearedtobeactiveatall timesofthe dav.
