Welcome to the Jean Johnson Schaefer (BSN, 1950) Resource Center for Innovation in Clinical Nursing Education (RCICNE), the School of Nursing's state-of-the-art learning lab. The RCICNE is a multimedia resource center that provides computerized patient care simulations using SimMan, audiovisual materials, computers, reserve readings, equipment, and supplies necessary for teaching and learning selected nursing roles and skills. The center provides a learning environment where nursing students, under the guidance of nursing professors, have the opportunity to

work in a realistic but non-threatening laboratory, become familiar with instruments and equipment, gain experience in recognizing problems,

develop decision-making skills, and

refine patient care techniques to better prepare for participation in actual patient care experiences.

The RCICNE also provides instructional design, online course, and audio/visual support for faculty within the school.

Hours of operation

Fall, spring, and summer semester schedule Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.– 5 p.m.

Closed Saturdays and Sundays

The lab is accessible through double glass doors located in either the north or south hallway on the third floor of the nursing building. Faculty and students should check the scheduling monitor near the central services desk for up-to-date scheduling information.

Lab space

The facility is divided into five distinct areas:

The Flex Space (the traditional skills lab area) offers 10 patient stations, manikins, beds, and equipment simulating a hospital environment. Students have the opportunity to practice procedures from catheterization to cardiac monitoring using a plethora of manikins and equipment

An examination area, containing six fully outfitted examination rooms, is primarily used for physical assessment classes.

A simulation area, capable of capturing each learning session, allows students to practice hands-on critical care procedures for acute illness; the area also contains four debriefing rooms where students may see live feeds or review saved sessions.

Computer classrooms are dedicated to classroom teaching and simulation.

The classroom is a 54-seat, multimedia classroom equipped with powered tables, Internet access, projector, VCR, and DVD player for class presentations.

Check-out clinical supplies and equipment

Faculty and students should contact Mary Martin at [email protected] or by phone (317) 278- 1831 to check out clinical supplies and equipment. Students are required to leave an Indiana University Student ID. Check-out duration is two hours, and supplies and equipment must be used within the RCICNE.
