Introduction:

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plays a crucial role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the region through its strategic

approaches. This essay aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of ASEAN's geopolitical strategies in inter-regional and external contexts, employing the lenses of realism and liberalism. By examining the challenges and

opportunities faced by ASEAN, as well as the distinctive realist and liberal perspectives, we can better understand the intricacies of ASEAN's geopolitics.

Body:

I. The Realist Perspective:

Realism highlights the centrality of power and security concerns within international relations. Applying this lens to ASEAN's geopolitical strategies, we observe several key features:

a. Balancing Power:

ASEAN actively engages in power balancing to maintain stability and prevent dominance by any external power. It does so through strategic alignments, military cooperation, and the establishment of regional forums like the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) to engage major powers in the region.

b. Security Cooperation:

ASEAN places great emphasis on security cooperation in the face of regional challenges, such as territorial disputes and non-traditional security threats like terrorism and piracy. The establishment of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) reflect ASEAN's realist approach to ensure regional security.

c. Hedging between Major Powers:

ASEAN adroitly navigates the complex dynamics between major powers, specifically the United States and China. By maintaining close ties with both while avoiding overt alignment, ASEAN seeks to leverage the benefits of cooperation without being overly reliant on any single power.

II. The Liberalist Perspective:

In contrast to realism, liberalism emphasizes the role of institutions, cooperation, and norms in international relations. Examining ASEAN's geopolitical strategies from a liberalist standpoint reveals the following aspects:

a. Norm Entrepreneurship:

ASEAN actively promotes liberal norms, such as peaceful conflict resolution, consensus-building, and respect for sovereignty. This is evident in its

commitment to the principles enshrined in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) and the establishment of the ASEAN Community.

b. Regional Integration:

ASEAN pursues regional integration through economic cooperation, trade liberalization, and the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

These initiatives aim to foster mutual benefits, enhance economic development, and promote stability within the region.

c. Soft Power Diplomacy:

ASEAN employs soft power diplomacy to enhance its influence and shape regional dynamics. By engaging in cultural exchanges, educational programs, and people-to-people initiatives, ASEAN builds trust, understanding, and cooperation among member states and external actors.

Conclusion:

ASEAN's geopolitical strategies in inter-regional and external contexts demonstrate a nuanced blend of realism and liberalism. Through a realist lens, ASEAN prioritizes power balancing, security cooperation, and strategic hedging. Simultaneously, applying a liberalist perspective reveals ASEAN's commitment to norm entrepreneurship, regional integration, and soft power diplomacy. The interplay of these two approaches enables ASEAN to navigate complex geopolitical challenges and pursue stability, peace, and prosperity in the region. By understanding these strategies, we gain valuable insights into ASEAN's role as a geopolitical actor and its impact on the larger international community.
