Meeting of January 11, 1937

All members present except Mr. Rinsch, excused.

The question oi establishing a sumn1er camp for boys and girls at Camp Brosius was again discussed and the secretary was instructed to write resort owners at Elkhart Lake re- questing their assistance in securing campers.

Upon recommendation of the Administrative Board, the Board of Trust 8es decided to continue the high school scholarship next year on the same basis as during the past ;:.rear.

The Board 'instructed the secretary to have 1500 copies of the 1937-38 catalog printed for $211.73 and to keep the type standing for printing anotlrnr issue for $131.00.

A suggestion received from Mr. Abdrew Lascari regarding

changes of the rules governing Turnverein scholarships, was referred to the National Executive Committee of the Turner- bund for discussion at the next national convention.

Upon recommendation of the Administrative Board, the Board of rrrustees decided to confer the degree of . .Jaster of Phys- ical Education honoris causa bn Mr. Hemry W. Luther because of his long and outstanding services in Physical Education and especially because of his successful work for the Cleve- land Tu.rnfest. This is subject to approval by all me:nbers.

The secretary repor·ted that Mrs. Am_a Stempfel has donated two books of historical value to the Normal College library,

a ·copy of t he minute8 of the Turnerbund from 1858 to 1872,

I and a volume of the Tumzei tung, 1853- 54. The Bra rd in- structed him to vrite Mrs. Stempfel a letter of thanks.

The secretary further reported the receipt of $1000.00, a donatiou made in the name of Mr. Henry Suder by his three daughters, Miss Lenore Suder, Mrs. Melitta Pick and Ivtcs.

Toni Zinn. The Board accepted the donation with thanks and adopted a motion that a suitable memorial resolution be

adopted and published; also a motion to invest this ~1000.00

in a short term bond.

WHEREAS, Mr. Henry Suder, f or many years Direct er of Phys- ical Education in the Public Schools of tLe City of Chicago,

and for over twenty years a member of the :National Executive Committee of the American Gymnastic Union and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nonnal College, expressed

shortly before his death on October 8th, 1936, the wish that a donation be made to the Normal College from any estate which he might leave; and

WHEREAS, in compliance with this wish, his daughters, Miss Lenore Suder, Mrs. Melitta Pick and Mrs. Toni Zinn, have

donated to the Norm.al College the sum of One Thoasand Doll- ars ($1000.00) .in memory of their deceased father;

Meeting of March 8 1937

The secretary reported that all members have voted favorably on the proposal to award the degree of Master of Physical Education, honoris causa, to Carl J. Kroh, George Wittich, George R. Pfaff, Dr. Gustav Ec~stein, Carl Graner, Louis Kirsinger and William Kopp.

In view of their outstanding work, th~ Board agreed to award scholarships to three applicants from Technical High School.

The National Executive Committee of the Turnerbund acknowl- edged receipt of objections to the Trust Agreement dfafted by it and requested that a revision be submitted. Such re- vision was adopted and the secretary was instructed to sen~

it to the National Executive Committee.

Meeting of February 8, 1937

All members present except Mr. Vonnegut (excused).

The secretary reported that the Board members have wiani- mously voted in favor of conferring the honorary degree of Master of Physical Education upon Mr. Henry

Luther.

Treasurer Mr. Kurtz reported that the $1000.00 left by M~.

Henry Suder to the College, bas been invested in a United States ireasury Bond.

The secretary reported that resort owners at Elkhart Lake have sent names of their guests who might be interested in the camp for boys and girls and have indicated their wil- lingness to cooperate in securing campers. Mr. Schreiber reported tbat a prospectus of the camp is about ready for the printer. He was instructed to have 1500 copies printed and mailed by March 1. The Board appointed Mr. Schreiber director of the camp and fixed his compensation at $200.00.

Upon recommendation of the Alli~inistrative Board, the Board of Trustees decided to pay the travelling expenses of Mrs.

Hester to the national convention of the A. P. E. A. in New York, and of Mr. Schreiber to the midwest convention

in Cincinnati.

Upon further recommendation of the Administrative Board, the Board of Trustees ordered a vote on the proposal to confer the honorary degree of Master of Physical Education upon the following: Carl J. Kroh, George Wittich, George Pfaff, Gustav Eckstein, Carl Graner, Louis Kirsinger and William Kopp.

The Board further decided tba t a meeting be arranged with the State Director of Teacher Training reg#i.rding the status

of the Normal Ccllege. ·

A Declaration of Trust for the Normal College Maintenance Fund, apparently drafted by the National Executive Commit- tee of .the knerican Turnerbund, 'WB.S discussed and the see- retary Wis instructed to convey to the committee objections to certain provisions.

Meet~ng of April 12 1937 All members present; rvir. Vonnegut presiding.

The secretary read a letter from the Wisconsin Industrial Commission notifying the College of exemption from yhe Un-

employment Compensation Act.

The Administrative Board reported that 18 applications for the high school scholarship have been received. Those of three men and two women fra:n one high school in Buffalo were! laid over. A Japanese student born in this country is to be accepted if he n:e ets the requirements. Mr. Herman Friedrich

of Fort Wayne who does not meet the requirement regarding rank in class but is highly recommended by his principal and Mr. Henry Meyer, is to be granted the scholarship. Approved., The Board sanctioned the holding of commencement on May 27 and authorized Dr. Sputh to engage a speaker.

Diplomas are to be printed early enough to send his to Mr.

George Wittich before he leaves for Europe on May 19.

The secretary submitted a plan of the collection of old accounts through the Midland Finance Corporation; he was instructed to secure further information and to sign a con- tract with this company if found satisfactory.

The Board appropriated $175.00 traveling expenses for one member to attend the Turnerbund convention in Los Angeles.

Mr. Schreiber was authorized to engage Mrs. Aker as nurse for the camp. For her services and the payment of $150.00 she is to get room and board in the camp for herself and three children.

The Board instructed the secretary to protest against re- marks contained in the minutes of the March meeting of the National Executive Committee of the Turnerbund; to call at- tention in his letter to the delays of the Maintenance Fund campaign caused by the National Executive Committee, and to publish this protest in the Turnzeitung.

The Board then adjourned.

Meeting of May 10 193'7

Presant: Mr. Rappaport, Mr. Kurtz, Dr. Sputh, Mr. Rinsch and Mr. Schreiber. Mr. Vonnegut and Mr. Koster excused.

Mr. Rappaport presiding.

The secretary reported that he has entered into contract with the Midland Finance Corporation for the collect ion

of old accou11ts.

He further reported that soon after the April meeting he received a request from National President Seibel not to publish the letter of protest decided upon by the Board.

As this request arrived on Saturday morning when it was not possible to see many members of• the Board and as 'prompt action was necessary if the publication was to be delayed, he discussed the matter with some rrembers who agreed with him that it be best mot to publish the protest at present.

He -presented a letter from the Natiora.l Execut ive Committee

apolo~izing for the offensive remark. The Board then de- cided to accept the apology and to drop the matter.

The secretary further submitted a revision of the trust agreement for the Maintenance Fund as adopted by tre Nat-

ional Executive Committee. As some provisions are not sat- isfactory to the Board, he was instructed to write the N.E.C. concerning these objectionable paragraphs.

The Board approved the following recommendations of the Administrative Board: 1. All students to be required to pay their fees during the first two weeks of each semester.

2. To arrange an inter-change of instructors with other institutions in this vicinity if possible. 3. To engage Wm. Pump as swimming instructor for the June camp if his terms are s~tisfactory; 4. To award the degree of Bachelor of Physical Education to Mrs. Thelma Burnett Curley of Syracuse and Mr. Frank Przybylski of Buffalo who have com- pleted the fourth year's work in absence.

Dr. Sputh reported that arr·angernents for commencement have been completed: Mr. Emmett Rice will deliver tre address, Miss Alice Lange the farewell and Miss J.;ola Lennox the response. The Board appropriated $10.00 as a token of ap- preciation to Mr. Rice.

Mr. Rinsch reported that the State Board of Education has re-accredited the C~llege.

The secretary reported that thirty applications for admis- sion have been received.

Mr. Schreiber proposed the building of t ennis courts at Camp Brosius and was instructed to secure bids.

The Board then adjourned.

Meeting of September 13 1937

All members present except Mr. Vonnegut (excused).

The Administrative Board recommended the awarding of the degree of Bachelor of Physical Education to Mildred Stroh- karck, Robert Nohr, Jr., and Emil H. Rothe who have com- pleted the requirements. Approved.

The Detroit Socia~er Turnverein invited the Board to a

banquet and meeting on September 18 at which time the trans!i-J fer of the Natiom l Executive Committee will take place.

Dr. Sputh and Mr. Kurtz were delegated to represent the Board.

The Board created the office of Vice-President and elected Mrs. Hester to fill this position. The Board also increased

the salary of Mrs. Hester, Mr. Rinsch and Mr. Schreiber.

The Board discussed changesand repairs at Camp Brosius and instructed the secretarybto obtain bids on the moving of four cabins and the erection of a toilet and wash room, and the lining of the lower floor of the Annex with a

soundproof material. The Board further decided to have the cabins re-stained at a cost of $275.00.

The Board then adjourned.

Meeting of October 11 1937

All members present except Mr. Vonnegut (excused).

The Administrative Board submitted the following recommen- dations:

To permit Mr. Hinman to pay one-half of his note plus int- erest at this time and to extend time for payment of the balance for one year.

To send Miss Cappello to Indiana University Extension Division for a three-hour course.

To grant Mr. Leibinger reduction of the tuition fee for his Sophomore and Junior years.

To accept applications for the high school scholarship only until August 1st.

To award the degree of Bachelor of Physical Education to Mildred Chacona and Walter Eberhardt who have completed the requirements.

To suspend students who do not pay their first semester fees by Thursday, October 14.

Upon motion, all of the above recornrnendations were approved by the Board.

~r. Sputh reported that he and Mr. Kurtz represented the Board at the meeting in Detroit when the National Executive Committee was transferred.

The secretary was instructed to send an invitation to the new Natio.ral Executive Committee for an early meeting with

the Board of Trustees for the purpose of adopting a trust agreement concerning the Maintenance Fund an~ of arranging

the fund campaign.

The Board then discussed repairs and changes planned for Camp Brosius. The Board decided to repair the track and to move four cabins to a new location and build a washroom.

A committee consisting of Dr. Sputh, Mr. Rappap,ort and Mr.

Schreiber was authorized to order this work after Mr.

Schreiber bas visited Elkhart Lake and talked the matter over with the contractors.

The Board then adjourned.

Mr. Rappaport explained the purpose of the Normal College Maintenance Fund, the difficulties encountered in the past, and the problems of the present. The meeting agreed on the following:

That the trust agreement as proposed by the Board of Trust- ees, be tentatively adopted, subject to approval by the National Exeeutiv'e Committee of the Turnerbund • .

That the Board of Trustees pre sent to the Nat ion al Exe cut iv el Committee the names of prominent Turners who might serve as trustees of the Maintenance Fund.

That the National Executive Committee manage the cam::paign for this fund and if possible, engage some suitable person in Detroit as campaign director.

The Board then

Meeting of November 8, 1937 All members present except Mr. Kurtz (excused.)

Mr. Schreiber reported for the committee which was to de- cide on improvements at Camp Brosius after Mr. Schreiber's visit at the camp. The following work has been ordered:

1. Moving of four cabins to a site at the top of the hill, at a cost pf $90.00

2. Repairs of cabin doors at ~15.00

3. Construction of a rest room for men and women between the four cabins that are to be moved, at $180.00, this amount to include the wiring of the rest room as well as the four cab ins.

4. The necessary plumbing consisting of the installation of two toilets in the rest room, a washbowl in each of the four moved cabins, and the construction of a septic tank and dry well, at a cost of $332.50.

5. Repair of the running track and runways, at $353.00.

The Administrative Board submitted the case of the student George W. Kuhn. Dr. Sputh explained that Mr. Kuhn had ap- plied for a high school scholarship which was not granted because he did not rank within the upper 40% pf his class.

Mr. Kuhn claims that he was not notified of this decision and entered the College believing that he would receive the scholarship. His physical education instructors at Fosdick-Masten Park High School as well as his principal demand that under the circumstances he be given the schol- arship. The Board decided to reduce Mr. Kuhn's tuition fee to $100.00 per year as it seems established that the Col- lege office was at fault by not_ notifying him, but that this is not to be considered a scholarship, only as a con- cession, and that Mr. Kuhn must maintain an average of B minus; otherwise this concession will be revoked.

The Administrative Board also presented a letter from the student Otto Ryser whose Turnverein scholarship was with- drawn for the Sophomore· year because he did not maintain the required average grade. Mr. Ryser asked to have the scholarship continued for the Junior year provised he main- tain the required average. The Board decided that this re- quest can not be granted, but expressed its willingness to extend the time for paying the tuition fee for the Sopho- more year.

Furthermore, the Administrative Board presented to the Board of Trustees the case of Mr. Uriah Aberson whose moth- er has sustained an injury and therefore not been able to pay his fees. The Board decided to grant him time until Christmas, if necessary.

Mr. Joseph Weissmueller offered to present to the College a ship model to be raffled off for the benefit of the Col- lege. The Board decided to accept his present with thanks.

The Board xxx±xxxxx~ instructed the secretary to write to the National Executive Committee of the Turnerbund regard- ing the present financial status of the College and to ask for payment of the monthly approxpiation.

Meeting of November 26, 1937

All resident and all non-resident members present except Dr. Hofmeister; also Carl L. Weideman and Emil L. Pletz of the National H;xecutive Committee; Chas. Geber, secretary of the technical committee, and Mr. Arthur Kuecken.

After some discussion of the trust agreement for the Main- tenance Fund, Mr. Kuecken outlined a plan for the solici- ting of subscriptions to this fund. The Meeting adjourned 'llVi th the understanding that the National Execi ti ve Commit- tee will proceed with preparations for the establishmmt of such fund.

The Administrative Board submitted various recommendations which were discussed at a me et ing with the non-re sid en t members on November 26, as follows:

The high school scholarship is to be continued. on the pres- ent basis, that is, to be awarded to one man and one wom:i.n

gr~duate of selected high schools who rank within the upper 401'0 of their class. However, they will hereafter be re-

qui~ed to maintain an average of B minus instead of C.

The minimum age of applicants for Turnerbund scholarships is to be reduced from 18 to 17 years.

A Turnverein recommending a member for a scholarship shall assume responsibility for the payment of the member's tui- tion fee in case he should refuse to teach in a Turnverein after graduation.

The rule requiring graduates of the two- and three-year courses to complete the requirements for the degree within three years and one summer after graduation, is to be elim- inated.

Students for whom the College selects a rooming house are required to remain there for at least one semester unless a

chan5e is approved by the Administrative Board.

Mal members of Turnverein cla s~e s who are not old enough at the time of entrance in the College, to be admitted to

full membership in a Turnverein, will be granted the reduct ion of tuition fee if their fathers bave been members of a Turnverein i' or at least three years and if they th ems elves have attended a Junior class for at least three years. All the above recommendat .1.ons were approved by the Board.

A proposed tour of a broup of 32 students for the purpose of advertising the College and stimulating interest in the Maintenance Fund campaign, was approved by the Board pro- vided tbat no expense to the College is incurred.

The secretary was instructed to extend the thanks of the Boa ~cd to Mr. Paul Krimme 1 for pre sent ing one dozen mat hangers to the College.

The Board also instructed the secretary to send out ballots for a vote on the pro~osal to award the degree of Master of Physical Education, h. c., to Messrs. Paul Krimmel, Grover W. Mueller, August H. Pritzlaff, Wm. K. Streit and Martin H. Trieb.
