No changes are anticipated in the way Kiwanis International Foundation Board members are elected. The topic of the Think Tank was “The Relationship between Kiwanis International and the Kiwanis International Foundation.
Should KI request grants or items that are clearly not educational?
OVERHOLT: In Rotary International, they must have six former international presidents in the foundation. BLAND: I think you'd be interested to know that Trustee Jim Sheets has had a fundraising background, and we're very happy about that. With Jim's background in college fundraising stuff, it fits in very nicely with this.
QUESTION: IF THE AI FOUNDATION IS THE FUNDRAISING ARM OF AI AND IT GOES ALL-INCLUSIVE, HOW DOES THAT AFFECT THE CONCEPT OF NON-FUNDRAISING OF INCOME INCOME. KREPINEVICH: Some document says that the AI Foundation is the fundraising arm of AI. Art Swanberg went over this, and it was one of the things he scratched out.
MILES: According to point 10 of the foundation's bylaws, the funding they're talking about for Kiwanis is that which goes to charitable purposes and not the many ways we use it for ongoing fundraising. I don't think this should be included in anything written because I think most of our non-contribution fundraising will be done by KI for KI purposes independent of the Foundation.
With the exception of grants that are restricted for specific programs, should KI request grants from KIF at all?
KAISER: What we've come to in terms of non-dues income from KI is that to the extent that KI raises funds at all, it's for non-charitable things, to help us with our administration of Kiwanis . THACHER: Any outside grant request that we receive must be approved by the IRS and itself must have a 50l(c)(3) exemption.
Should KIF make grants to Key Club International that are not restric- tive grants, the same for Circle K?
How can the grant request process be improved so that Kl can have information earlier so that grant monies will be available during the
I also believe that Key Club, Circle K and Builders Club should not receive money from the Foundation. In the years that followed, if we didn't have the money to cover something, we went to the Foundation for a grant. People can say: "If the Foundation's money went to the MEP, people would contribute more." But we really don't know that.
SMITH: Can Kiwanis Clubs apply to the Foundation for a grant to implement an MEP program? The work of the Foundation must be different from what we expect from the 8,000 clubs. BLECHMAN: If the Foundation wanted to do something in the medical field, there are certain medical research programs that we can find if we need medical expertise.
Most Kiwanians pay $15 a year in membership fees, but some pay $17, $25 or $100 because they give to the Foundation that subsidizes AI services. OVERHOLT: I would much rather take the other aspect and say that these are the things that we think should fall in the area of the Foundation that provides grant money.
14- BLAND: MEP must be for more than one year
- Should KI accept the concepts document by KIF?
- Should the KIF staff be placed under the supervision of the International Secretary? How are the KIF personnel to be supervised, selected, and
- What committee should review and finalize the concept agreement, the specifics of the agreement and when will it be implemented?
- What should be the relationship between KI and KIF in the development of KI community concerns or MEP?
34; It is the desire of the Foundation to have all services of the International Office available as needed." 117: "It is the desire of the Kiwanis International Foundation to have its administrative office in the International Office of Kiwanis International and to give the International Secretary supervision to the employees of the Foundation." I think this is the direction of old #7 which says that the International Secretary will provide oversight to the employees of the Foundation.
8: "It is the foundation's wish to have all services from the International Office available as needed." GOODFELLOW: Do the two representatives of the foundation have an opinion on what the international secretary's relationship should be with the foundation's staff. I was under the impression that we were a long way down the road on this issue of the relationship between our secretary and the foundation staff.
OVERHOLT: If this is how the Foundation feels, it takes a load off our minds. Perhaps it would be useful for the Foundation to consider the same sort of thing.

Personally, and I think I can speak for the majority of the KIF board, we would certainly support your thoughts on KI. as soon as financially feasible) handles all of its own expenses, except those related to Kiwanis World. We would look for a long-term, united MEP who would support the KIF in its requests for contributions from the Kiwanis family. I believe that KIF should also continue to support our youth groups, Key Club and Circle Kand Builders Clubs.
KIF Board members agree that the KIF Board should consider the possibility of adding non-North American representation to the KIF Board. The KIF Board has long proposed the fact that the Secretary of AI and The Administrator of KIF a. But I, as well as some of the other KIF Board members feel that the KIF.
The administrator must maintain control over the staff and administration of the foundation, since KIF uses the premises of the KI building, so there must be a relationship between them. Often KIF is compared to the Rotary Foundation and its leadership; comparing the two organizations is like comparing apples and lemons.
What should the relationship be between KI and KIF-as to service projects, such
It was the concensus of opinions that the KIF should not be identified in the Constitution
It was an interesting experience and I appreciate the kind attention we received, especially from the two vice presidents who are on our board this year. The final outcome was encouraging as it was agreed that a committee from our two organizations would meet shortly and present a plan to the two organizations. The third item was the problem that we as KIF have been struggling with for a year or more.
After informing the KI Board of Directors that it is imperative that we have a cause before a major international fundraising project is established--· this means that we must have a goal that will be acceptable worldwide. I am pleased to report that my impression was that this concept was graciously received and accepted by the entire committee. To end on a very positive note, Noris Lusche agreed to meet on March 2nd or 3rd and make proposals related to a long-term KIF plan that would be compatible with his MEP.
You will remember that we have felt pig-tied because we could not get any direction in the past. Bill and I will continue to work closely this year and hopefully he can get your dn program line before October; if not, he'll be on board to help us in '89-'90, our 50th anniversary year.
DONALD GOODFELLOW, Q.C
President Gene has appointed International Secretary Kevin, President-elect Noris, and myself to represent Kiwanis International and to meet with representatives of the Kiwanis International Foundation to develop guidelines regarding the relationship between the two organizations. I note that at the bottom of page 1 you refer to a bylaw change regarding the term of office for the board members of the Kiwanis International Foundation. In addition, there shall be seven other trustees, two of whom shall be members of the Kiwanis International Board of Trustees.
In addition, you will note that I have removed the reference to “ex officio” regarding the members of the Kiwanis International Board of Trustees who serve as members of the Kiwanis International Foundation Board of Trustees. It was great to be with you in Indianapolis and I look forward to working with your committee to develop the guidelines. I was unsure who would oversee the Foundation Administrator and the staff under him in the absence of the KIF President or other members of the Board, my response.
However, this administrative staff must be under the direction of the International Secretary and he must be the spokesperson of the KIF to the Kiwanis International Council. A seat on the KIF board should not be the result of giving, but rather a seat that will encourage more internationality in giving.
CLY-
We must stand on our own two feet in terms of operational money and KIF grants must only be used on the ground to promote Kiwanis projects. Even the MEP must be able to be financed from operating income and KIF grants must go to the source of the project, precisely to the entity that is putting the project into effect. A reasonable and feasible % of funds should be achieved and the expenses for promotion and administration should be kept within these limits.
Again, it would be very helpful if the KIF budget was based on those monies collected last year, and not on an educated guess of what will be available the current year. This process will streamline the entire establishment procedure and will serve to put the Board of KIF in an extremely enviable position to budget money that is already in the bank. It seems to me that certain KIF board members are overly protective of their "turf" and are unwilling to surrender that "turf" to the betterment of Kiwanis as a whole.
As long as the KIF Board retains control of its fundraising programs and of the grant system, who cares whether the KIF Administrator answers to the International Secretary or to the KIF Board, which must act through its Executive Committee, a cumbersome method of saying the saddest.
