without separation between cephalothorax and abdomen; with but few
hairsabove; apair in frontbetweenlegsIandII,asubmarginalpairabove leg IV, and twopairs of longer ones behind; the medianpair are on the dorsurn,theotherpaironthe posteriormargin; alargedarkellipticalspot eachsidebehind. Legsofmoderatelengthandslenderness; legI has the longhairfromnearmiddleofpenultimatejoint; the basal clavatehair of tarsusiscurvedneartip. Thecaroncles are notverydistinct,buttheclaws arelarge. InlegIVthe tarsusisfullytwice as longasthe metatarsus. The vulvaofthe female,whichiswellforwardandintercoxal,showstwodivari- cate lines, and each side two oval suckers. Themale opening is farther back, andnearly three times aslongasbroad, ratherbroaderbehind, and thesides slightlyconcave; there aretwocircularsuckerseachside.

case inpointis that ofJanthinosoma musicum,
Culex jamaicensisand
Taznio- rhynchussignipennis.These
larvaearevery
peculiarand
essen- tially alike.The
adultshave been
considered unrelated;but
the 'genitalia are insome
respectsvery
similarand
placethese
forms
close together. Thisleadsme
toconclude that the genitalic groupings,where
reinforcedby
the larval ones,show
natural divisions,and
Iam,
therefore, in accord with Dr. Feltinusing
them
asthebasis for genera. It istruethatingeneral practiceother charactersthan
these are preferable,owing
tothe necessity of preparing the specimensand
to the fact that the charactersareshown by one
sexonly,and
that theone
not gen- erally collected. I believe, however, that since the groupsare natural ones it is probable that other recognition characters willbe
found. If they should not be, itmight be
better to reduce the genitalic genera to subgeneric rank, for practical reasons,without
thereby losing sight of their value. Itseems
inevitable that thegenus
Culex shallbe
divided,and
the geni- talicdivisions aremore
naturalthan
those recentlyfounded on
scalesand
papal structure.As
to the latter it is necessary toremove and mount
the palpi,which
is as practically objection- able a process asany
connected with thestudy
of the cT geni- talia.The
sketch herewith ofGrabhamia
cantator Coq.,shows
thenames
applied to the different parts.They vary much
inamount
ofdevelopment
as well as inshape
in the differentspecies. Anopheles
shows
the simplest arrangement, scarcely distinguishablefrom
the Corethrinae. This is in accord with the larval characters, since Anopheles larvae arevery
close tosome
Corethrid forms, as Eucorethraand
Dixa.The
Culicinaehave
a small articulated tip to the terminalsegment
of theclasper,
which
appears tobe
lackingin theAedinae, althoughin UranotcEnia sapphirina there is a small spinemuch
resemblingit
and probably
representing its rudiment.The
species of Culexshow
themost
differentiation, especially inthetrueCulex or pipiensgroup and
these arethemost
specializedlarvae.We
have
thus aconcordance
in general as well as special charactersbetween
genitalicand
larval structureI
have thrown
