Background

Internal conflict is a conflict that occurs in the heart or soul of a character in a story. In this study, the researcher aims to elaborate on the conflict in "The Prince and the Pauper" by Mark Twain. The Prince and the Pauper is one of the classic works of literature that is very interesting to study.

The strength of this novel lies in each character playing a role, plus the figures of the Prince of Wales and Tom Canty who continue to adapt and explore their respective characters. In The Prince and The Pauper, Mark Twain tells the story of life in the old city of London between a Prince of London and a poor boy from the Offal Court. The Prince and The Pauper tells the story of a poor family in a corner of London in the 16th century, the Canty Family, who gave birth to a son named Tom Canty.

The problem arises when Tom Canty meets Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales, outside the palace. The conflict becomes tense as the Prince of Wales listens to all the ramblings of Tom Canty and what he wants to be. The issue is made even more tense when the Prince of Wales, who turns out to be Tom Canty, is called mad because he doesn't remember anything about the kingdom.

Therefore, the author formulates the title of this study as Conflicts of the Main Character in Mark Twain "The Prince and The Pauper". What is the internal and external conflict in the novel The Prince and the Pauper.

Structuralism Approach

9 so-called elements of literary works, especially those found in the novel according to Mukarovsky and Vodica i Ratna states that the elements contained in the novel include the theme, plot, characterization, setting, point of view, message and style. Therefore, to understand the meaning of literary works optimally, structuralism analysis, namely the building blocks of literary works, is a stage that is difficult to avoid or, more extreme, it must be done. By using approach, the author intends to maintain the objectivity of a literary work, so that in order to understand its meaning, literary works must be studied from their own structure, independent of historical background, independent of the author's intentions, and independent of their effect on readers.

Based on the theory of structuralism approach, the author focuses only on intrinsic element in the novel. Furthermore, the author describes the intrinsic element of literary works such as character, plot, conflict, setting, theme related to identifying the conflict in The Prince and the Pauper. Character is the most important element in a story because character plays an important role in the course of events in the story.

Therefore, the main character really determines the development of the story plot as a whole Nurgiyantoro Additional characters are characters whose appearance is usually ignored, or at least receives attention Nurgiyantoro. Setting becomes one of the important elements in literary work because of its function of creating the atmosphere of the story and leading readers to imagine the situation of the story. There are three types of settings, namely setting of place, setting of time and setting of society.

The use of setting in a story is usually not only to indicate when and where the story takes place, but also as a place to take on the values that the author wants to express through the story. The setting of the society suggests things that are related to the behavior of the social life of the community in the place that the works of fiction are talking about.

Concept of The Conflict

The internal conflict can be called man against himself, and the external conflict encompasses man and against man, man against nature, man against fate. Internal conflict, also called man versus self, is a conflict that exists within a character. External conflict can be divided into two categories, namely physical conflict and Nurgiyantoro social conflict.

Dahrendorf's works are inextricably linked to the thoughts and works of Karl Marx. Dahrendorf seems less satisfied with Marx's analyzes and concepts. He then suggested that the theories and concepts presented by Marx could be updated again when analyzing modern industrial society. Dahrendorf argues that we must "replace the ownership, or non-ownership, of viable private property with the activity of, or rejection of, authority as the rule of class development:" Through social class, such coordinated or disorderly collectivizations of people are seen. as evidenced by inert interests arising from and identifying with the position structure of important planned relationships.
