REVIEWER DATE 10 September 2023

BACKGROUND - The article examines the struggle with the technology

of architecture by considering the conceptions of the 'primitive hut' put forward by Vitruvius, Marc-Antoine Laugier, Gottfried Semper, and Joseph Rykwert.

- The notion of the 'primitive hut' has been concerned with architecture's role in carving out technological

society from humanity's found state in the midst of forceful nature.

- Vitruvius believes that architecture evolves from natural origins to an 'ideal' through the invention and refinement of architecture, leading humanity from a primitive state.

- The paper discusses the film Blade Runner, which depicts a futuristic urbanism in a state of decay and explores the ambiguous relation between the built and the natural. It is seen as a critique of the separation between nature and technology in architecture.

- The paper concludes that criticism has a responsibility to mediate the extreme positions of determinism and autonomy in architectural theory by expressing the nature of the technological/architectural struggle.

PROBLEM some of the contents of the problem as follows

Idealization of Primitive Huts This article challenges the idealization of Primitive Huts in architectural theory. The problem lies in whether this concept accurately

represents the relationship between architecture, technology and nature in the modern world.

The Relevance of Historical Concepts in Modern

Architecture There are issues regarding the relevance of historical architectural concepts, such as the Primitive Hut, in today's technologically advanced world. This article raises questions about whether these concepts can adequately address the complex and diverse relationships between technology, nature and architecture in contemporary society.

Changing the Way Nature is Viewed This article points out that runners often seek out natural environments for their activities, but this does not mean a total rejection of technology. The issue here is the need to redefine our understanding of what constitutes a natural

environment in a world where technology is already highly integrated into everyday life.

(3)

Architecture and Sustainable Technology Another issue addressed in this article is how architecture can adapt to a changing world by integrating sustainable technologies and green design principles.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES - The purpose of the research is to examine the struggle with the technology of architecture and explore the conceptions of the 'primitive hut' put forward by Vitruvius, Marc-Antoine Laugier, Gottfried Semper, and Joseph Rykwert. The research aims to analyze how the notion of the 'primitive hut' paradoxically supports the intention of architecture to separate itself from nature and the earth. It also seeks to understand the depiction of a futuristic urbanism in a state of decay and the ambiguous relation between the built and the natural in the film Blade Runner as a critique of the separation between nature and technology. The research further aims to view Rem Koolhaas' discussion of the skyscraper and Piranesi's etchings as similar critiques of this

dichotomy. Ultimately, the research concludes that criticism has a responsibility to mediate the extremes of determinism and autonomy in architectural theory by expressing the nature of the technological/architectural struggle.

RESEARCH METHODS Research methods in the article include conducting a

literature review, which critically examines existing literature on architectural theory, historical architectural concepts, and the relationship between technology and nature in architecture. This involves analyzing and synthesizing ideas from academic papers, books, and schInterviews or Surveys Researchers can conduct interviews or surveys with architects, runners and experts in the field to gather insights and opinions on the topic.olarly sources.

Case Study In architectural research, case studies are often used to analyze specific architectural projects or designs that exemplify the themes discussed in the article.

Content Analysis This method involves analyzing written and visual content, such as architectural drawings, to identify themes, patterns, and ideologies associated with the use of technology and nature in architectural theory.

Historical Analysis Given the reference to the concept of the Primitive Hut in the fictional article, historical analysis can be used to explore the origins and evolution of architectural theory over time, especially with regard to the balance between technology and nature.

Comparative Analysis Researchers can compare different architectural styles, designs or approaches to highlight vInterdisciplinary Approach Research may incorporate

ariations in the use of technology and nature.

OBJECT OF RESEARCH - The article examines the conceptions of the 'primitive hut' put forward by Vitruvius, Marc-Antoine Laugier, Gottfried Semper, and Joseph Rykwert in the context of the struggle between technology and nature in

architectural theory. It explores how the notion of the 'primitive hut' paradoxically supports the intention of architecture to separate itself from nature and the earth, and how this separation is critiqued in the film Blade Runner. The paper also discusses Rem Koolhaas' discussion of the skyscraper and Piranesi's etchings as similar critiques of the dichotomy between nature and technology. The overall aim is to mediate the extreme positions of determinism and autonomy in architectural theory by expressing the nature of the

technological/architectural struggle.

RESEARCH RESULT - The research examines the conceptions of the

'primitive hut' in architectural theory and how it supports the intention of architecture to separate itself from nature and the earth. It explores the critique of this separation in the film Blade Runner, as well as in the discussions of the skyscraper by Rem Koolhaas and the etchings by Piranesi. The paper concludes that criticism has a responsibility to mediate the extreme positions of determinism and autonomy in architectural theory by expressing the nature of the technological/architectural struggle.

- The notion of the 'primitive hut' has been concerned with architecture's role in carving out technological society from humanity's found state in the midst of forceful nature. However, the emphasis of authors like Vitruvius and Laugier is on the purity of thought that overcomes nature rather than the interaction of natural and technological forces.

- The research also references the views of K. Michael Hays, who critiques the extreme positions of

determinism and autonomy in architectural theory.

ADVANTAGES OF RESEARCH - Provides an examination of the conceptions of the 'primitive hut' in architectural theory, offering insights into the intention of architecture to separate itself from nature and the earth.

- Explores the critique of this separation in the film Blade Runner, as well as in the discussions of the skyscraper by Rem Koolhaas and the etchings by Piranesi, providing a broader understanding of the dichotomy between nature and technology in architectural discourse.

(5)

- Offers a critical analysis of the extreme positions of determinism and autonomy in architectural theory, as discussed by K. Michael Hays, highlighting the need for mediation and expression of the nature of the

technological/architectural struggle.

- Provides a historical perspective by referencing the views of Vitruvius, Marc-Antoine Laugier, Gottfried Semper, and Joseph Rykwert, contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolution of architectural thought and its relationship with nature and technology.

- Explores the Utopian notion that architecture can imitate and replicate nature, offering insights into the possibilities and limitations of architectural design in creating worlds without reliance on the earth.

RESEARCH SHORTCOMINGS Here are some potential shortcomings that can be

attributed to this study Limited Empirical Data This article mainly draws on the perspectives and experiences of runners to support its arguments.

However, the article does not provide specific empirical data or quantitative research to validate these

perspectives.

The article does not appear to involve architectural experts or practitioners in its research process. The involvement of architects or architectural academics could provide a more comprehensive understanding of architectural theory and its relationship with nature and technology.

Historical Depth Although this article briefly touches on the historical context of the Primitive Hut, it could benefit from a more in-depth historical analysis to understand the evolution of architectural thought and its relevance to modern times.

CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, our critique calls for a reimagining of

architectural theory. Rather than returning to a simplistic past, we should embrace the complexity of our modern world, recognizing that technology and nature can coexist harmoniously. Architecture, as a reflection of society's values, must adapt to this new reality. We encourage architects to continue exploring creative solutions that strike a balance between technological advancement, sustainability, and the human desire to connect with nature. Only through this holistic approach can we draw a meaningful line between technology and nature in architectural theory, forging a path towards architecture that is rooted in history and responsive to the evolving needs of our time.
