In the context of Industrial and Organizational
Psychology, coaching is a structured, goal-
oriented process that enhances employee and leadership
performance.
A coach does not need to have greater
expertise or experience in the client’s field,
because a coach is an
expert in facilitating the
learning process
(Yuliawan, 2016)3
A coach plays multiple roles, including:
1. Facilitator of Individual and Team Development
Coaches help individuals identify their strengths, development areas, and set career goals aligned with the organization’s vision. Through reflective questions and feedback, coaches encourage self-directed learning.
2. Agent of Behavioral and Organizational Change
Coaches guide behavioral shifts in the workplace—such as improving leadership, communication, and conflict management skills. They
support adaptability and reinforce a positive workplace culture.

3. Performance and Productivity Enhancer
Through coaching, employees clarify performance goals, overcome challenges, and receive constructive feedback. This directly supports motivation, engagement, and job satisfaction.
4. Alignment Bridge Between Personal and Organizational Goals
A coach assists employees in aligning their personal aspirations with broader organizational goals, which increases engagement and commitment.
5. Provider of Reflective and Learning Space
Coaches offer a safe environment where employees can reflect on work
experiences, draw lessons from challenges, and build long-term self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

1.Relationship
Coaches need to demonstrate that they are open and honest and that they value others.
2.Being
Coaches need to have self-confidence to be able to work with their coachee through difficult challenges. They also need to maintain an enabling style, to avoid slipping into a directive approach with their coachee, and to be self-
aware.
3.Doing
Coaches need to hold a clear methodology, to be skinful in applying the method and its associated tools and technique, and to be fully present.
