• Make the SA an organization through which students could voice their opinions to the administration and be beard

• As Student Body President. I will make myself acceaibie to the studerts and try to help them with any uni

versity related problem they may have

• Make IUPUI more visible and re cognized ui the community

• Make the SA office an information center for campus activities

• See that the SA and other campus organizations communicate and work together

• Expand the route of the Shuttle Bus

• Work on getting the IU Board of Trustees to change the name of this campus to the University of Indianapolis, which Blum says was determined to be the IUPUI students' choice in the SA Name Change Survey

• Represent the Student Body to the administration and make the students' feelings known

“ All of these things," Blum said,

“ show that I am willing to work for

the students and for this campus In this light. I am placing my name up for the office of Student Body Presi dent "

Mike Reardon. JO, is a junior in the School of Business majoring in ac counting, and is currently a senator in and speaker pro tern of the SA Reardon is the Association for a Bet ter Campus' choice for president as well as being one of the founders of the party

"My main objective in pursuing the office of the presidency.'' Reardon said, “ is to work toward making the Student Association a strong voice for students ”

Tim Salih an JO, is a junior in the School of Liberal Arts majoring m political science, and is currently a senator in and public relations director of the SA Sullivan says that his platform is based on the hope of at

taining an accelerated rate of growth far the IUPUI campus Sullivan said that he believes this growth takes on many forms, but that the ones be per ceives as the moat important are

Although the Advancement of the inrfianapnhs Campus’ presidential candidate--Terry Mays-has been ruled by the Student Court ^ be in eligible to run because of a lack of academic credits, the AIC is still nrn ning six Candida tea lh the IUPUI Stu

dent Association

Mays outlined a platform which he aays will be followed by tim e running under the AIC banner One of the top priorities, he aays, is for the SA to work with the many different groups an campus Too tong. Mays said, has there been a fear by SA members that cooperation and cosponsorship would dilute the power of the SA

The AIC lists getting books for the library as its number two priority

Mays said that he would like to see the establishment of a tax-deductable trust fund to be used exclusively (or buildings on campus Along with tfiat, AIC would like to see the SA work with local government which, AIC believes to be the only way both IUPUI and Indianapolis will benefit from mutual growth AIC aays that the establish ment of IUPUl's own lobbying group in conjunction with the Indiana Stu

dent Association will insure the con

tinued growth of IUPUI.

AIC feels that private industry would be allowed on campus so as to offer students more than just credit hours Thu, says Mays, will develop IUPUI into a growing community where apathy will die

Lastly, AIC would work to change to

"name-only" to the University of Indianapolis

Mays asks all those who vote for the AIC to vote against the SA s new con dilution The AIC. he said, does not believe that the executive branch of the SA should be as powerful as it will be as outlined in the new constitution

“ Nor do we believe that credit hours should be used as a determinate in li

miting participation to an elite few,"

he said This is in reference to the new requirements for SA office: 24 hours of credit for senators. 1J hours here at IUPUI and a GPA of J.S or higher, and 30 hours. It at IUPUI. and a GPA of 2.3 (or president and vice president

sentative on the IUPUI Committee on the Handicapped and coordinator din

ing Freshman Orientation Because the role of the student body vice president-to chair SA meetings-Navarra says that a plat (arm is not needed A knowledge of parliamentary procedure is needed, he says, and believes that he has suf flcient knowledge on the subject

“ I believe that the moat important aspect of the vice presidency is in keeping the office of the SA running smoothly and orderly." he said “My main goal is to see that office pro cedure is streamlined and profes

sional so that business can be coo ducted In this way, I would be contri

Student misses card table

Doan urges student involvement

An Open Letter

The prevailin g sentiment concern

ing student governm ent at IU P U I has been, at boat, apathetic The sm all percentage of students voting in past Student Association elections reflects this lack o f interest One can only as

sume students do not fully com pre

hend the function of student govern ment Surely, no one would knowingly ignore such an opportunity to supple

ment a college education with the sociological and adm in istrative ex perience offered by student govern ment

The IU P U I student governm ent is the student body's instrument for participation in the university's adm inistration and grow th Through student .em in en t, students partici pate in *cl in islrative and academ ic com m ittees for the campus as a whole Student governm ent repre

sentatives frequently address the Board of Trustees on issues relating to students at IU P U I The Student A ffa irs A dvisory Com m ittee has six student m em bers nominated by the student governm ent This com m ittee determ ines the allocation of m ore than $60,000 annually to the funding of student activities Without the stu dent mem bers, there would be no student activities Without student m embers, there would be no student participation in a m atter which should be of concern to all students the funding of student activities

A university education ia a multidi mens ions I experience Classroom participation is m erely one of those di mentions The depth and reach of a student's education should go through the academ ic onward to such endeavors as form ing and supporting organizations which are able to repre

sent the student as a citizen, if you w ill, of the university IU P U I is an institution of higher education with an enrollment in excess of 22.000 persons Such proportions indicate the need for a system of student governm ent Such an opportunity for experience in establishing representation should not be shirked

T h ere a re those who claim student governm ent and som etim es the uni versity itself have nothing to do with the real world T o those doubters 1 suggest that it is m ore real than you can im agine In any situation, it ia foolish to surrender a liberty under the guise there was nothing to gain

1 urge every student to vote on the election day for a truly representative student governm ent
