AFRO–A 355 African American History I (3 cr.) A study of the history of African Americans in the United States. HIST–H 217 The Nature of History (3 cr.) An introductory survey of (1) what history is, (2) types of historical interpretation, (3) common problems in history, and (4) the uses of history.

Speech Communication R110 (3 cr.) Students with previously acquired public speaking competence may be eligible for special credit points and exemption from this requirement; contact the Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, Cavanaugh Hall. Students for whom English is not their first language may be exempted from the foreign language requirement for no credit if they complete English W131 and W132 with the required grade of C or higher.

Basic Courses

School of Liberal Arts students may complete one or more minors and/or certificate programs. Students in other schools of IUPUI may complete minors in the School of Liberal Arts.

Bachelor of Arts

If admitted to candidacy for another degree by the dean, students must earn at least 26 additional credit hours in residence and meet the requirements of the School of Liberal Arts and the department in which they are candidates. Courses required for minors and certificates may also be used to satisfy other requirements, including distribution requirements.

A. Requirements

Electives The remaining 21 hours may be chosen from any of the courses offered in Communication Studies, as long as departmental requirements are met. A list of communication studies approved for H-Options is available in the Honors Program office or in the department office.

In consultation with your advisor, choose four English courses at the 200 level or above, with at least two at the 300 or 400 level. At least three courses must be outside the language and linguistics concentration, and at least one course must be of literature.

Geography

History

6 credit hours African/Asian/Latin American history (EF-G prefix courses) (Note: H prefix courses are special topics, and their application to categories must be approved by advisors.). Thematic concentrations require 12 credit hours of courses in fields such as urban, family, or science/technology/medical history and two 6 credit hour support areas as specified in the theme description.

International Studies

The student seeking to teach history at the secondary level may (1) major in history and obtain the necessary certification in addition, or (2) major in social studies education through the School of Education. In both cases, the student must agree with the School of Education for a complete program.

Philosophy

Contact history advisors and the department office for lists of thematic concentrations currently available to majors. In the first instance, history students should consult the Department of History's advisors about study advisors and the School of Education regarding certification.

Two electives, including no more than 3 credit hours of F495, individual lectures in French (1-3 cr.), for a total of 6 cr. The teaching major in French requires the completion of a minimum of 36 credit hours above the 100 level, including 30 credit hours in 300- and 400-level courses.

German

Up to six hours of F396 and/or F496, French Study Abroad may count as an elective for the French major. Students working toward certification are encouraged to work with their School of Education advisor as well as their departmental advisor.

Japanese

Spanish

Students seeking a certificate at the secondary level must complete all professional courses required by the School of Education and must work with the School of Education advisor in consultation with the Spanish advisor. Teaching Spanish requires completion of a minimum of 38 credit hours above the 100 level, including 30 credit hours in 300- and 400-level courses.

Minors

Note for native speakers of Spanish: since S317 is not open to native speakers, another course at the 300 or 400 level must be substituted.

A student's minor program will be developed in consultation with American Studies faculty members and the student's American studies advisor. Two additional 300- or 400-level courses offered under the American Studies rubric or cross-listed in American Studies (6 cr.).

A minor in economics is a logical addition to courses in business administration, technology, engineering, healthcare, natural sciences and social sciences. Grade Requirement: The grade for each course submitted for the minor must be C (2.0) or higher.

Business

Students will consider the classical foundations of the study of rhetoric and have the opportunity to critically and carefully evaluate persuasive messages from a variety of perspectives.

Business and Professional Writing

Foreign language competence: completion of the second year of a modern foreign language (or the equivalent). Students may wish to complete these 9 credits from one of the specific area or thematic concentrations to facilitate later transition to the major.

Legal Studies Minor

Electives (9 cr.): any courses chosen from the approved international study area and thematic concentrations course list as long as they come from at least two different departments. Note: Other courses may be accepted with the approval of the Medical Humanities and Health Studies Committee.

Philanthropic Studies

Y103, 6 credit hours from 300-level courses in American Government or Y200, and 6 credit hours of political science electives in other areas. Y219, 6 credit hours from 300-level courses in international relations or Y200, and 6 credit hours of political science electives in other areas.

Medical Sociology

Urban Studies

Certificates

Theatre and Performance

To enroll in the Undergraduate Certificate in Theater and Performance program, IUPUI students must do two things 1) complete an application form in the School of Liberal Arts Student Affairs Office (Cavanaugh Hall 401) and 2) complete and mail this application form to the Communication Studies Office (Cavanaugh Hall 309). Students who have less than 55 credit hours must consult the coordinator of the Undergraduate Certificate in Theater and Performance Program.

Technical Communication

Students select the remaining 9 hours of electives in consultation with the department faculty advisor to fine-tune the program to the individual student's interest based on the independent creative project proposal. Apply for undergraduate admission to IUPUI and specify Theater and Performance Certificate as the goal.

Geographic Information Science

Students who have already completed undergraduate degrees can apply for the undergraduate certificate or apply to the IU Graduate School for admission to the graduate certificate program (see below). In addition to the required courses listed above, students must take six credit hours of electives at the 300 level or higher that will enhance their background in GIS-related issues or apply their expertise to a specific area.

Paralegal Studies

Students must receive a grade of C or better in each course they plan to apply for certification. Due to the required course requirements for the certificate, students must meet the prerequisites before taking the certificate course: they must have college-level writing skills, computer skills, and they must pass POLS Y211 Introduction to Law , with a grade of C or higher.

American Humanics

Students can combine the certificate with other programs or majors or take it on their own. Students who have questions about the certificate in Paralegal Studies or who wish to declare and pursue the certificate should contact the Director of Paralegal Studies, Professor David Weiden, Cavanaugh Hall 504J.

To complete one of the four focus areas listed above, students will select 9 hours of electives in consultation with the Director of Motorsports Studies. The Motorsports Studies Capstone will be designed by the student in consultation with the Director of Motorsports Studies.

Graduate Minors

BUS M200 Marketing and Society: A Look at Roles and Responsibilities or BUS M300 Introduction to Marketing (3cr). In addition, virtually all departments in the School of Liberal Arts offer graduate courses, including certain 300- and 400-level courses that can be taken for graduate credit in programs at the Indiana University Graduate School or the Indiana University School of Education.

Students will not receive credit without the written approval of a graduate advisor and the instructor of the course.

Applied Communication

A. Requirements (36 cr.)

The Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies focuses on the history, culture and values ​​of philanthropy. The interdisciplinary approach to philanthropic studies allows for the consideration of the different characteristics of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.

Teaching Writing

Electives not on the approved list must be approved by the director of museum studies prior to registration. GRE scores are required for admission to graduate programs in history and museum studies.

Teaching English Speakers of Other Languages

The Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies provides students with interdisciplinary training in museum practice and knowledge of contemporary issues in the museum field. It trains students in specialized aspects of museum practice such as education, exhibition planning and design, collections care, and museum administration by combining museum studies course work with curriculum in other IU schools.

Centers

The Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture is a research and public institute dedicated to promoting understanding of the relationship between religion and other features of American culture. The center is part of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts in the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Department of English.

Individualized Major Program

Philanthropic Studies P512 Human and Financial Resources for Philanthropy; and Philanthropic Studies P590 Internship in Philanthropic Studies. P 450 Senior Seminar in Philanthropic Studies (3 cr.) These courses are designed to help graduating seniors synthesize and demonstrate learning in their major.

Film Studies

Multiple disciplinary perspectives and contemporary theoretical foundations of philanthropic studies are used to design and critique the potential. These include nonprofit management, museum studies, the bachelor's degree and the philanthropic studies minor.

A460 Topics in Anthropology: (variable title) (1-3 cr.) A conceptual study of selected topics in anthropology. E384 The African Diaspora (3 credits) This course examines the cultural formation of the African diaspora in America.

Requirements for the MA in Applied Anthropology

F111 World folk music and culture (3 ECTS) The course explores the role of music in human life. F356 Chicano Folklore/Folklife/Folk Music (DKK 3) The folk traditions of the Mexican Americans as a reflection of the historical experiences and cultural identity of this people in the United States.

The Center for Economic Education

The Department of History offers students the opportunity to better understand the human social condition through the systematic study of the human past. Other schools also offer courses relevant to students considering the study of law.

World Languages and Cultures

Studying Arabic opens the door to the cultures of the Middle East and the wider Islamic world. Japanese studies is an interdisciplinary field that includes the study of the language, culture, and literature of Japan.

Departments

There is a three-week summer program in Pachuca, Mexico for students who have completed at least their first year of Spanish. Some programs require only one semester of prior Spanish study, while others are suitable for students in advanced Spanish courses.

Activities

The Spanish Resource Center is sponsored by the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain to assist and promote Spanish education in the United States, and particularly in Central Indiana. It is open for use by professors, teachers and students of Spanish, as well as the general public.
