Scholarship candidates serve four years on active duty (if selected by Cadet Command) and four in the Army Guard or Army Reserve unless receiving a Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarship. No previous military experience is required, and no conscription is imposed upon participation in the basic course.

Theoretical concepts are covered in the classroom, and practical military skills are learned in a field training environment.

Curriculum

If the non-scholarship graduate chooses Reserve Force service, the eight-year commitment is used in the Guard or Reserve. Additionally, students lead a battalion where they are given various command and staff positions based on an order of merit determined by their past performance in the program. Students can withdraw from the foundation course at any time until the end of the second year.

Course credit is determined as follows: 100-level courses are one credit hour, and 200-level courses are two credit hours, for a total of six credit hours in the basic course.

Learning Community Course

This obligation can be fulfilled in various ways, depending on the personal preferences of the individual and the needs of the Army. There, officers undertake duties for six years with a troop unit, and the last two years of the eight-year commitment require no participation (only readiness status). Enrolling in the basic course is an excellent way to explore officership for those with an interest.

Essentially, this course is intended to introduce the student to the Army and ROTC.

Professional Military Education Requirements

The 300-level courses emphasize the military skills that will be required to successfully complete the LDAC. The 400-level courses focus on those skills a cadet needs as he makes the transition to officership. Advanced Course students are required to participate in field exercises and occasional leadership labs and meet minimum standards of physical fitness.

Individual courses cover the areas of the military profession, leadership, values and ethics, personal development, physical well-being, military history, drill and ceremony, customs and courtesies, squad tactics, map reading, first aid and basic marksmanship.

Academic Policy

All required textbooks and materials are provided at no cost to the student, and all tuition and fees are paid through university fee waivers.
