School Hosted Symposium in January as Part of 25th Anniversary Celebration
In 1969, an agreement was signed between Indiana and Purdue Universities to combine their regional campus operations in Indianapolis into a single entity to be known as Indiana University- Purdue University at Indianapolis.
The Normal College of the American Gymnastic Union was, at that time, a department of the Indiana University School of HPER, located in Bloomington.
Until 1969, the first two years of study were in Indianapolis and the final two years were in Bloomington. The third year of study was added to the
Indianapolis curriculum in 1969 and the fourth year in 1972. Further, the name of the school was changed to the Indiana University School of Physical Education.
At the present time, the School of Physical Education is one of 17 separate degree-granting schools on th~ IUPUI campus.
Many of these schools are celebrating
this 25th anniversary with a series of special programs and events, some of which are campus wide. The School of Physical Education hosted a symposium on January 20th at the new University Library. The symposium, entitled Modern Issues in Competitive Athletic Programs, featured five former students from the past 25 years who have distinguished themselves in athletic careers.
The panel included Clara Caito, women's basketball coach at Speedway High School in Indianapolis; Bill Cronin, head football coach at Madison Central High School in Richmond, Kentucky;
Dana Greene, head basketball coach at Plainfield High School, Plainfield, Indiana;
James Perkins, assistant to the executive director, USA Track and Field in Indianapolis, Indiana; and Charlie Strasser, trainer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles, California.

A research project about Turner history is looking for help from the Normal College graduates. The Special Collections and Archives at IUPUI is attempting to locate, inventory, and preserve the historical records of Turner Societies in the United States. Although Turner societies were numerous throughout the nation and had many important functions in the German- American communities, research on Turners has been fairly difficult since information on them is scattered or inaccessible. The purpose of this project is to locate published and unpublished ma rials of Turner societies, to aid in the preservation of historical material, and to prepare a research guide of Turner materials.
Since the Normal College of the Americ n Gymn stic Union played an important role in th development and d< ily~lif of Turner societies, information on th coll ge is also of great value. This proj ct h been funded by a grant from th Nation I Endowment for the Hum nit1 s.

The IUPUI Special Collections and Archives is the repository for the' national records of the American Turners. In the course of this project, we will be working with individual societies to preserve their records locally. We have already started to visit societies to inventory records and give advice on preservation. If you are a member of a current Turner Society, please watch out for announcements about our visits in the club house or newsletter. If you have any duplicates of publications, we would be glad to receive them for the National Turner Archives.
If you have any historical materials, know someone who should be contacted, or would like to find out about our visiting-schedule, please contact: Katja Rampelmann, Project Archivist, Special Collections and Archives, IUPUI Libraries, 755 W.

3President's Message
Hello Everyone,
Hope you have had a productive and yet restful and rewarding summer. As I begin writing you, allow me to reflect upon this place which we call home:
Brosius. So much of what makes this place special is the people. For me, this reflection brings a profound appreciation for the warmth and caring extended during my long association with the University and Camp Brosius. It is my hope that each of you will take a moment to reflect as well.
From opening campfire and the scurrying to relocate the ceremonial script to the closing campfire with Jim and Gail leading the songs ... one might also see ...
... Rudie Memmel at the horseshoe pits ready to rule on any close decisions.
... Libby Harpring organizing the Brosius Tennis Tournament.
... Nick Kellum gathering scores for the golf outing.
... Norm Schulte and the regatta, assisted by Cliff Franklin; Brinkley McArver and Pat
Richard, rival helmsmen.
.. .Ed Straub and Frank Feig/
demonstrating the teaching progression for a backward roll during Professional Buzz Session.
... He/en Straub, Neva Meyer, Bill Mel/oh and assorted others poised at the bridge table.
... Group gatherings before and a~er
dinner.
.. just sitting in the sun at lakeside before breakfast.
To say Brosius has always been popular as a camp is an understatement.
Each year, my husband and I return to recapture pleasant summer memories and participate in the activities. And as you see, the old traditions live on and new ones are being created. Mark your
1994 calendar now Uune 26-July 2).
Bring your children, grandchildren, husband or wife, and plan to come home.

IUPUI Alumni Roundtable
Alumni and friends of IUPUI have formed a new group called the IUPUI Alumni Roundtable, an organization designed to strengthen alumni and community ties to IUPUI and provide support and service to the campus.
The IUPUI Alumni Roundtable, recently created by a 60-member planning committee, is the first group to include alumni from all of the degree programs at IUPUl's two-university campus and non-alumni from local businesses and the community who are interested in IUPUI, according to Janet Shirley, director of alumni relations.
The IUPUI Alumni Roundtable will provide events and programs aimed at getting alumni involved with the campus,
according to the group's president, Richard Schilling, a systems analyst at Eli Lilly and Co. and a 1989 graduate of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI. 1.U. and Purdue graduates of IUPUI number more than 80,000 and more than two-thirds of IUPUI alumni live in Indiana. A large majority--more than 35,000--live in Indianapolis.
"We will try to develop an organization that appeals to a broad alumni base," says Schilling.
Other IUPUI Alumni Roundtable leadership includes; Jo Ellen Myers Sharp, reporter at The Indianapolis Star and a 1978 graduate of the 1.U. School of Journalism at IUPUI, chair of the
communications committee; David M.
Quandt, senior vice president of SEG Engineers and Consultants Inc. and a
1983 graduate of the 1.U. School of Business at IUPUI, co-chair of the program committee; Diane Spaulding, a travel coordinator for the Department of Administration of the state of Indiana and a 1972 graduate of 1.U. Northwest, co-chair of the program committee; and Nelle Godio, a 1974 graduate of the l.U.
School of Education at IUPUI, chair of the identity committee.
The IUPUI Alumni Roundtable also will be actively involved in planning events for IUPUl's 25th anniversary, to be celebrated during 1993-94 academic year, according to Shirley.
