Surface shield and legs pubescent. <)nthegastric region lhere are two small tubercles on the median line, the anterior the smaller;. The ocular peduncles have a spiuule above, and traces of a spinule on the anterior and posterior parts of the middle. Rostrum slender, spiuuloiis on the margin, ca. a stop on the length of the shield's post-trout petition.

Basal antenna] joint very long and narrow, ending. in a spine, spiny at the edges, without prominent tubercle. This species can be distinguished from .1. fugacc, A. Milne Edwards, from the Antilles, because of the fewer spines on the carapace, the slimmer rostrum and the shorter walking legs. Ohelipeds about two and a third times the length of the carapace, spiny; menis about as long as the propodns, more or less four-sided, the two rows of spines on the lower edge being the strongest; the palm widens slightly towards the Angers, with about six rows of spines;

The merus of the cheliped has three small spines on the upper surface, one at the distal end.

Elevations of the cardiac, gastric, and branchial regions angular, each extended into a tripartite spine, on the branchial region located on the posterolateral margin. The eternal ridge is curved, subparallel to the anterolateral margin and has a tubercle in the middle, larger than the others. Ridge between subhepatic and various ducts finely crenulate, pubescent, continuing on subbrachial region with several ball-like tubercles.

Male abdomen with very short first segment; secondly, widest with a transversely serrated crest, with a larger denticle at the tips and in the middle; third, fourth and fourth segments anehylosed; sixth, wider than long; seventh, very short, triangular. Ischium of external maxilipeds stippled, outer margin hairy, inner margin serrated; inerus with surface uneven, hairy, anterior margin concave; a groove is diagonally forward and outward across the surface; there are two tubercles on the outside of this groove, one of which is on the antero-exterior angle; the inner corner is strongly produced and bears a grainy edge.

238 NEW GENERA AND SPECIES OF CRABS — RATHBUN

Front with median lobes small, separated by a shallow sulcus, the margin sloping obliquely from each lobe to the conspicuous lobe at the inner orbital angle. Postorbital angle not produced, separated by a shallow sulcus from the first tooth, the game is the shortest; since a slight margination separates the first and second teeth; the third is most prominent; the fourth and last has a sharp spine that extends back onto the carapace. Ohelipeds as in the genus; with depressed granules and punctures, most evident on hands; hands not very deep, without stria; on the inner surface.

Front with a wide median emargination, separating broad arcuate lobes; lateral lobes small, less developed; margin toothed.

10 NEW GENERA AND SPECIES OF CRABS — RATH BUN

The long carpal spine reaches almost to the base of the spine in the nianne, and is no longer present in the young males. The granulated ridge on the posterior portion of the ventral region is triangular instead of JL-shaped, as in spinicarpus. Carapace transverse, widest a1 the last antero-lateral teeth.; depressions between the regions level, except the liver and the branchial-gastric sutures; surface grain; granules largest on the hepatic region, and almost entirely lacking near the posterior margin.

Aniero luiei al and posiero Litei;d limitsaboutequalin length; a thero-lateral teeth four, except the postorbital, the third largest;. Chelipeds not very unequal, roughened with spiny granules, arranged more or less in lines; merit short, trigonal, with strong spine at upper end near distal end; carpus rounded above with ;displaced spine at its inner angle, and. Carapace very convex longitudinally, almost straight transversely, in depth; iml irregularly punctate, darkly granulated near margins.

Front two-lobed, with a narrow median groove from which ;t sulcus ex tends backward in the mesogastric region; lobes with almost straight edges, sloping forward and outward from the middle. The sides of the carapace and the upper margin of the hand are sparsely hairy, while the inside of the carapace, the upper margin of the merus, the inner border of the carapace, and the abdomen of the female are thickly fringed with hairs. Maxillipeds open wide; meral joint with anterior margin concave, inner border convex, palpus articulated at antero-iuterior angle.

Chelipedsequal, granulate; merus with a tooth above, one-third Hie distance from the distal tip, and one near the distal end of the lower outer margin. Ambulatory legs long and slender, clothed with downy hairs, which are longest on the last three joints; third pair longest.

It may be identical with a short-toed specimen i from the west coast of Lower California, which Lockiugton dubiously refers to stenodactylus. Carapace very convex, regions projecting, smooth; there is a long groove traversing the branchial region, and this groove widens opposite the posterior margin of the ventral region to a depth from which fine irregular grooves radiate; cervical suture deep, with a pit near the frontal margin. Posterior or upper border of superior orbital border curving forward and outward, with smooth margin; anterior or lower margin denticulated, sharply bent downwards near base of ocular pedestal, then gradually rounded upward to join posterior margin at some distance from anterolateral corner of carapace, which is sharp and points forward.

The row of denticles or tubercles on the inner edge of the pollex is continued parallel to the base of the dactyl, and between this row and the dactyl is an additional row; the irregular depression in front of the slanting row is smooth and shiny to the naked eye.

First paii- of ambulatory legs shorter than chelipeds, weak; second pair stronger than first; the third pan very long ami strong, especially the meral joint: the fourth pair immediately between the first and the second: daclvli as long as the propodi, Amlmlatory leg SetOSO,. In females (the crest of the heart is much less prominent than in males, the fangs are less open or do not open at all, the dactylic tooth is larger, and the pollex teeth are fused to a low dentidilate appearance. , 27 millimeters; length of larger female 11 anterior sides and verj slightly visible boma above, outer jaws not large euugb to completely close buccal cavity; ischium rudimentary; merus long and curved; palpus double.

Mule: Carapace subpeutagonal, slightly longer than wide, smooth, stiff, a weak sulcus visible behind the stomach area, internal and anterolateral margins defined by a border of coarse setion, which is the thickest and longest of all the anterolateral angles. Abdomen widest near proximal end of second segment: tirsl segment short; merged segment with the first two of the constituent articles convex at the margin and separated by a distinct line, and the la^i articles slightly concave at the margin; third and fourth segments wider than long; terminal segment subrectangular.. illipedes with the merus curved at the outer edge, the distal portion almost transverse in position; the palpus articulated all its antero-external angle, twofold; terminaljoinl lour-sided, much wider at the end. Lubricate the palm, the top row ol seta- is.. on the inner surface, just below the margin.. latorv legs SU-equal, the second the longest; the fourth pair is the shortest and extends over the carpal joint of the previous pair; dactylia about as long as the propodi, ending in slender, curved hooks.

outer maxillipeds with ischium rudimentar); merus longer than wide, oblique, not curved, winged on edge; the palpus tree joint.

252 NEW GENERA AM) SPECIES OF CRABS RATHBUN, Opisthopua tranaveraua

Abdo male In males with five segments, the second with a thin, distinct trilobed ridge, the lobes minutely crenulate. Ghelipeds granular, very unequal; large cheliped with three spines on anterior part of merus, inner very small, outer largest and of moderate length; the hand is not very deep, nine-1 is not above; irregular ridge near lower margin of bear sharp spine near merus; small cheliped with merus with one spine; band with about eleven small irregular teeth above; both arms have lower margin spinulicrous.. legs with granulated lines on upper surface of carpal joints. The alcoholic specimen has red tints on the carapace and elieli- .. feet and an elongated red spot on the inner surface of the arm near the dactyl.

This species is almost related to .1/. eurtispina Miers, but differ in the shorter lateral spines and the character of the hands; in M.hawaii. Ensisde hand is less deep, the apex continuous and more prominent, the sinuses of the upper edge narrower. is regularly triangular and does not extend beyond the basal antenna. joint, instead of rounded, with a pointed point produced as in curti. The almost complete obsolescence of the median lobe of thepos. The inner margin also distinguishes this species from Eurtispina and relates it to Armata deHaan. The tuberculous border on the palm is closer to the lower apex; the second and third teeth of the upper edge, counting from the carpus, are larger and stronger than ingaudichaudii.

The walking legs are narrower; this is especially noticeable in the fourth and fifth joints; the elevator joint of the first three pairs is not as clearly granulated as in the figure. In young children these tubercles are more prominent and the lateral, literal, .mil spines are proportionally much longer than in adults. The above characteristics, which are constant in the hundred specimens examined, given the great difference in habitat, are.

Frontal area without large granules; there is a cluster of granules at the sum of the liver region. Cheli pedsin male about two and a half, in the female about one and a half times the length of the carapace; inerus subcylindrical with spiny granules; carpus and hand with flattened granules; hand compressed, fingers about two-thirds the length of the palm, not gaping, with granulated edges, inner edges finely toothed and hairy. Carapace slightly longer than wide, orbicular, convex; sulci define the regions distinctly; antero lateral margin behind hepatic region slightly indented; granules of entire surface, Mir granules varying in size, larger posteriorly, somewhat clustered on edges; three granulated tubercles ou the edge of the anterior part of the branchial region; one on fche back part; posterior marginal teeth strong, triangular; on fche intestinal region there is a shorl re.
