That is why we must so contemplate Jesus Christ that we do not estimate that He is not true God and of the same essence with the Father. But it is all our wisdom, nevertheless, that we learn from these shepherds (of whom it is here spoken) to come to our Lord Jesus Christ.
FIRST SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f91
It would seem as if it had only been a play, but when it happened that our Lord Jesus Christ endured such agonies it is a sign that He loved us to such a degree that He forgot even Himself and suffered that all the storm fell on His head in order that we might be delivered from the wrath of God. Next, so it is, then, that our Lord Jesus Christ has thus renounced Himself, that we might learn, if we wish to be His disciples, to do likewise.
SECOND SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f92
That, then, is what we have to observe in the saying of our Lord Jesus that we must be on our guard in order not to enter into temptation. We must also note when we are near our Lord Jesus Christ that it is then that we must be more vigilant.
THIRD SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f115
In fact, in the first place, our Lord Jesus shows him that he has offended grievously, because he was not ignorant of the law, where it is said,. Our Lord Jesus declares that He does not wish it now and that He ought not to do it. Here (as I have already mentioned) we see how the Son of God subjected Himself to such shames and that He preferred to let.
It seems that He tempts God when He does not pray to Him at all. It is part of the obedience of our faith when we consider God to be wise, so that He may have authority to do everything that pleases Him. Not that he was worthy of it, but in order that the offense might be removed.
FOURTH SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f139
Let us contemplate, then, in the person of Peter, that it is very necessary that God strengthen us each minute of time. But it is still worse that it is not only once that he denies the Lord Jesus. Yet our Lord shows by experience that it is nothing, and that only a little wind blows, and they are beaten down.
Since it is so, then, that if he had not been warned by our Lord Jesus Christ he would have remained there in his sin f143 and he would be forever plunged into perdition, let us know that we need to be solicitous after we have committed some fault. Now it is true that it is here spoken of only the look of the eyes. The entrance, then, that we have to come to our Lord Jesus Christ does not proceed from us, but it is inasmuch as God governs us and it pleased Him to show His election.
FIFTH SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f158
Now it is very certain that our Lord Jesus had declared Himself to be King, but not an earthly king. In fact, it is not without cause that our Lord Jesus wished to add as a confirmation that He was born and came into the world to speak the truth. By this we see that it is a doctrine of importance to know that the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ is not from this world.
It is then said that he presents what was his custom, “At the feast of the. That, then, is what we have to observe when it is here said that Barabbas had to be set free and Jesus Christ put there, as it were, the most detestable man in the world. That is why it is said that our Lord Jesus was accursed for our sakes, that is, that He received the curse which was due to our sins.
SIXTH SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f175
Then we can conclude, although men mock the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ that He never ceased to be prized according to His worth both before God and before His Angels. But since our Lord Jesus suffered them to spit in His face, He was willing to be buffeted on the head. Now it is here said that our Lord Jesus was led to the place which is called.
For it is certain that all that we endure for our Lord Jesus Christ is more honorable before God than all the pomp of this world. For he knows, if he can induce us to be scandalized in the person of our Lord. But in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ this had to be seen with the eye.
SEVENTH SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f199
For our Lord Jesus was crucified between 9 a.m. and noon, and He had been condemned about 9 a.m. Yet the death of our Lord Jesus did not remain merely a sacrifice of sweet savor. It is true that we are enlightened today by the death and passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Now in all the Papacy what is there except renunciation of the death and passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. That, then, is how our faith ought to be fastened on our Lord Jesus Christ. His wrath and His vengeance, renouncing the death and passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
EIGHTH SERMON ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST F210
For we know what the condition of our Lord Jesus Christ was while He went about in the world. However, at the death they still declare the hope that they had in our Lord Jesus Christ. But it is inasmuch as the water flowed from the side of our Lord Jesus Christ.
However, one might ask why our Lord Jesus Christ wished to be buried so carefully. The first is that they are not yet clearly enlightened concerning the fruit of the death and passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Nevertheless it is proper for us to suffer all that until our Lord Jesus comes.
SUPPER OF OUR LORD IS CELEBRATED
And it was not only just once that our Lord Jesus declared to them that he was living but many times. But the body of our Lord Jesus Christ had to be exempt from all such decay. We see, then, now, that the fragrance of the sepulcher and of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ has permeated even to us, so that we may become alive by it.
Thus it is that we must now be assured that our Lord Jesus, being raised, wishes us to come to Him and that the road might be opened to us. It is reasonable also that our Lord Jesus should keep His sovereign position, since He is the only Son of God, that is, by nature. That is, that it may lead us to the death and passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, and then to His.
FIRST SERMON ON THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f224
Luke, then, says that Jesus Christ “after having suffered, showed Himself alive to His disciples,”. Now it says that Jesus Christ showed Himself to His Apostles, and that showing Himself He expounded the Kingdom of God to them. However, we see also how we ought to esteem this grace when it is given to us; and when Jesus Christ draws us to Himself.
Also that is why Jesus Christ spoke so often of the Gospel, calling it the Kingdom of God. Since it is so, then when the Gospel is preached to us, it is in order that we may be reformed to Jesus Christ; and that everything that is of us may be cast down, and that Jesus Christ may raise us by His grace. So, then, it is not all to have entered, but we must: follow further, until we are fully united to Jesus Christ.
SECOND SERMON ON THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST F230
It is true that this cannot be unless it be ratified by the Holy Spirit in our hearts. It is very necessary to distinguish between the person of the minister and the person of Jesus Christ. Besides, it is certain that, when John said that Jesus Christ baptized in spirit and in fire, it is not restricted to a single appearance of the Holy Spirit in this form.
Consider that it is I Who baptize you.” It is true that it is said that God sends the Holy Spirit, but Jesus Christ also sends Him. For when the Father sends Him it is in the name of Jesus Christ and at His request. It is true that we do not receive the Holy Spirit in the form of fire.
THIRD SERMON ON THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f236
When he says “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father has placed in His own power,” He. Likewise let us weigh carefully this word: “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father has placed in His own power.”. Let us recognize, then, that it is not for us to go beyond such a limit.
Yes, it seems, then, that He wishes to say that it is not our right to inquire into this. Now it seems to us that it is too little to know this, and everyone wishes to go poking into things that God wished to be hidden from us. For we shall not change the order which God has set up — it is inviolable.
FOURTH SERMON OF THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST f243
That is why it is here said that they were clothed in white robes, as also when Jesus Christ was raised from the dead they appeared in white garments. For there is not one circumstance lost that God wishes to have omitted, since we know that His wisdom extends everywhere and that it is infinite. For it is not only for them that this is said, but it is for us also.
When it is said that He will come just as they have seen Him go up, that is to show us that we need not look for Jesus Christ here below until He comes to judge the whole world. For since by nature we are always inclined to lower things, it is very difficult for us not to be inclined to some superstition when one speaks of the Ascension of our. We shall be, I say, sufficiently armed for the encounter with them when we know that it is said that we must not seek for Him according to the natural senses of man, but only by faith.
